Houston, we. have. a. teenager.
What?
HOW?!
Our sweet Hailey Bug is 13 years old and I don’t even know how that’s real. But we are here, we are excited, and we can confirm that 13 isn’t scary. In fact, it’s amazing.
A friend told me that the teen years with her kids are some of her favorite because that’s when you can feel things begin to shift from a strictly parent/child relationship to a deeper level connection and friendship. I loved that and can see our wheels turning in that direction. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always be parent first for these years because even big kids still need boundaries and direction, but there is a deeper connection forming as we watch her discover and become who she is a little more each year.

Hailey at THIRTEEN
Hailey is crafty and artistic. She’s incredibly thoughtful and intuitive by nature. She’s addicted to the piano and can’t walk by it without stopping to play a tune. She is competitive in sports and board games. She knows how to push her sister’s buttons. She likes to have a plan and structure. She likes to workout and run with David and me. She enjoys hikes, being outside, and adventures. She isn’t a big fan of cities or places with too many people. She’s a caretaker. She loves organization and is thrilled that I’ve have allowed her to be the official organization czar of the new house.
This has been a big year for her. She’s going through a big transition, from the house she’s known her whole life, to nomad, to new home (hopefully this month). She’s handled it all with a lot of grace; I’m so proud of her. I really feel like this coming year she will thrive. She has a quiet confidence in who she is, something I deeply admire about her.

she seems like the sweetest nicest teen!!!! I remember when we were pregnant together (and now my beautiful almost-teen rarely lets me post a picture of her – mayyyyybe I’ll be allowed to do a tribute bday post 🙂 🙂 ) Happy birthday to Hailey, and congratulations on 13 years of motherhood to you!!! <3
Brittany Dixon says
Thank you; she really is a sweet soul. I hope to be like her when I grow up!
Isn’t it crazy how well we can remember back to being pregnant at the same time- even though it was a decade+ ago?! Wild! Happy almost birthday to your teen! <3

As a blog reader, I can tell Hailey is great – and you should take a little credit too. You’ve been her primary influence all these years! Has to make you feel proud and also blessed. Happy birthday!
Brittany Dixon says
Thank you so much, Sarah! I’m definitely proud of both my girls, that are as different as night and day, haha 🙂

My older grandson turned 13 this year also – that´s when I started following your blog – I remember when you brought her home. I dreaded the teen years when our kids were little. However, they were the best years ever (along with the teen-girl drama episodes.) Our daughters are now parenting their teen and pre-teenagers.
Brittany Dixon says
Wow, what a wonderful perspective to hear <3 I'm so glad it was a positive experience for you as well, Judy! Thanks for making my blog a part of your days for so long 🙂
Kelli H says
It’s been such a blessing watching H grow from newborn to 13!! I can’t believe I’ve been reading your blog for that long. haha. She sounds like such a delightful young teenager. I absolutely love your mindset on raising a teenager. You’re always someone I look up to as a parent!
