So last night I changed my mind on something. I now would be ok with someone throwing me a baby sprinkle. However, instead of everyone bringing diapers, I’d like all my friends to bring a bottle of wine. That won’t look too tacky on invitations, right?
I’m TOTALLY kidding.
I didn’t register this time around because for me personally (to each their own!), it felt a little odd, like I was asking for gifts when we really don’t need much. However, I’ve received several comments and emails from y’all on items I plan to buy or restock on before baby girl arrives, so I’m happy to share.
With only about 10 weeks left until baby girl is scheduled to make her arrival (and we all know babies are great about adhering to their due date), here are the items I hope to stock up so I can feel fully prepared for her arrival!
– Summer Infant Ultimate Organic Crib Sheet– We used these with Hailey and I loved how much easier they were to change than regular crib sheets. The two we had with Hailey, however, are, shall we say, well loved? I’m planning on getting 1-2 new ones for baby girl!
– Medela Pump & Save 5oz Bags– Last time I used bottles instead of bags and they were more difficult to store, so this time in anticipation of having another oversupply issue, I want to be stocked and ready with bags for saving milk.
– Easy Expression Hands Free Bustier Nursing Bra– I didn’t have a pumping bra with Hailey and always regretted it. Not that I plan to pump very often after getting my supply regulated, but with a toddler around, I don’t think NOT having a pumping bra is an option. An added bonus? It’s super sexy!
– Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow Wide Neck Newborn Feeding Set– Hailey never took a bottle well because we rarely gave her one. I’d like to have some at the ready this time so bottles are an option for feeding time.
– ERGObaby Heart2Heart Infant Insert, Natural– I LOVE our Ergo, though I didn’t even get it until Hailey was almost a year old. I’d like to start using it earlier this time because I love baby wearing and I feel it will be a necessity with a toddler, so the infant insert should allow me to do that.
– Aden+Anais Bamboo Burpy Bib Tranquility 2 Pack : Beads, and Leafy – Aden+Anais products are the bomb! Hailey was not a prone to spitting up, but this baby girl might be, so I want to be prepared. And if she isn’t, these were my favorite bibs (they are burp cloths that turn into bibs!) we I started baby led weaning with Hailey. I’d love to have a few more at the ready!
– Cloud b Sound Machine Soother Bubbly Bunny– Hailey still sleeps with her sleep sheep and I have zero intention of taking it from her. To keep confusion at a minimum, I’d like to switch up the sheep for the cute bunny for baby girl!
– Boppy Newborn Lounger- Pink– Hailey hated the swing, so I never really had a place to set her down. It was fine when she was all I had to attend to, but this time I’d love a safe spot to lay baby girl when I need two hands for a minute. I’ve heard people love their loungers and I just really want one.
Since we are reusing most everything we had for Hailey, the list is short and sweet. I’ll probably also grab a few onesies, since Hailey and baby girl are born in opposite seasons, a few pacifiers to have on hand and of course plenty of diapers and wipes, but other than that I feel pretty set!
The real value here is you! Please share…
Moms, what items did you absolutely love for you baby?
Second time moms, what items did you need the second go around?
I only have one but I love the Ergo insert, especially since our little guy was on the smaller size so I had to use it longer. We started with the sleep sheep but then started using an old iPhone with a white noise app.
Yea the sleep sheep wasn’t loud enough so we also used the white noise phone app – now we have a white noise sound machine for his room.
emma @ be mom strong says
The sleep sheep wasn’t LONG enough for us! Why cut off after 45 minutes? Then the baby wakes! We also got a white noise machine!
Our second baby boy is due in July. So like you, we already have basically everything we need. Of course, we have a few “nice to haves”
– the ergo insert – me too! I just found one used for 10. Score!
– A Baby Hammock. I just have to have one. I discovered the too late last time and after 100s of hours of bouncing him on an exercise ball I just knew we would have to invest in this genius invention. I also think it will be nice for baby to have a “quiet place” in a chaotic toddler house. Also, the door clip will allow us to move him from room to room. We are looking at this one http://www.nonomo.de/NONOMO-Baby-hammock
– Another carrier. I already have an ergo and a wrap – I want something else to try – either something like the jj cole agility wrap or a maitai (is that how it’s spelled? like the cocktail?)
– also we got a buggy board for our City Mini (I think that’s what you have too) so that I can transport both kids without buying a double stroller http://www.amazon.com/Lascal-Buggy-Board-Mini-Black/dp/B003CHJIK6/ref=sr_1_2?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1393331336&sr=1-2&keywords=lascal+buggy+board
As for clothes, I feel like we don’t need ANYTHING – I mean, charlie came in the winter so if anything, we’ll just layer less.
We are thinking about getting a double bike trailer too. Could serve as a stand in stroller should we need a double in fact…
Brittany Dixon says
Thanks for all the links- especially the buggy board! I had not heard of that, but considering we aren’t planning on buying a double stroller (at least at the start), I think this is a neat solution!!
The buggy board is a wonderful thing and I can’t understand why not more people have them in the US! (we live in Germany where they are everywhere)
The great part is that you can either fold it up or pop it off for when you don’t need it. And the little ones love to ride along.
I do recommend getting it earlier to install (not hard but takes some thought) and to ger her used to it – charlie is still a little afraid of it but i think he will love it when he can ride along with baby
Heather @ What Does She Do All Day? says
You’ll want to move that Ergo insert up to a need. With a busy toddler babywearing is a must! My second daughter was such a peanut (still is!) that we used the insert for a long time.
Great list! I used both medela and lanoish (sp?) bags. The latter were much nicer, easier to use, etc. something to consider. Enjoy the planning!
I agree, the lansinoh bags, I liked a lot better!
Yes! Lansinoh bags were much better, I agree!!
Also, when storing the milk, lay them flat in the freezer, def get more storage space!
Yes! Baby-wearing is a must with #2. I used my Moby when #2 was tiny, and then my awesomely generous neighbor gave me her Ergo when baby got bigger. So helpful when chasing a toddler. Sounds like you’re set.
I had to pump a LOT with my daughter (for various reasons), and the hands free pumping bra was a necessity! I had both the strapless variety and a halter variety, and definitely preferred the strapless for ease of maneuvering.
So far : boy clothes (does not apply to you 🙂 ), double Bob, that’s about it! Everything else we are reusing. Oh and a second crib, but you won’t need that either!
The hands free pumping bustier is awesome (used mine for a year at work) and the bags store great in the freezer! Lots of moms keep them organized in a shoe box.
I don’t have needs so much as wants for my baby girl #2 coming in June. Mine are:
– A sit n stand stroller. I got one this weekend off a local Facebook yard sale brand new! It’s the Joovy Caboose and is compatible with our Chicco car seat.
-An Ergo with an infant insert. I have a Moby wrap and Chicco carrier but didn’t like either very much. I’ve never heard a bad thing about Ergos.
-A new diaper bag that can double as my purse. I’m not carry two bags and two kids around. I want the Skip Hop Grand Central.
It’s three pricier things but aside from diapers, we don’t need much either (besides a dresser for the new baby) so I keep telling my self I’m being reasonable. 🙂
I def need a new bigger diaper bag. Any suggestions??
The hands free pumping bra is so something on my want list too. I remember what a pain it was trying to handle a newborn while pumping and that was without a crazy toddler around (I had a low supply issue). We bought the ergo infant insert. I want to be able to go on hikes as a family, walks, etc especially since baby boy is due in spring and I love the sturdiness of the ergo and the ease of putting it on one handed. I also bought another wrap that was suggested by Emily at daily garnish that’s similar to the Moby but instead of requiring 7 feet of tricky fabric, just goes on easily like a backpack. Yes please! We bought baby boy a new mattress, sheets and a coming home outfit as well as a new version of our other sons favorite blanket so it’s something new for him that we’ll take to the hospital etc. we bought our older son a new toddler converting crib (he’s only 18m old) and our new babe will sleep in the old crib. We also bought a double bob used on Craigslist and need a double handlebar console and car seat adapter still. Other than that and diapers, I think we’re set!
We also have a rock n play we used with our older son that is amazing. Perfect for infant sleeping, rocking and placing down without worry. And since it’s off the ground it’s a bit safer with a nutty toddler and a crazy dog.
We loved our rock n’ play for the first 4 months too! He started trying to roll over in it so we had to use the crib then.
I love the Rock n Play! Better then any fancy bassinet!
Rock n play saved my sanity!!!
I have that nursing bra and since I wasn’t able to make nursing work, it’s sitting unused. If you want it, it’s yours. It’s size medium. Let me know and I will send it to you.
Is it weird to offer you a used bra?!
I mean now it’s unused, but I did use it for a week or two. It’s clean though.
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, maybe a little weird but not given the situation 😉 That’s so generous of you! I’ll email you!
We must have been on the same wavelength today because I posted my favorite items from the first year today! I didn’t have a nursing bra and always have regretted it too. They would be handy. I loved using the infant insert for the Ergo. I think you can actually use towels too if you don’t want to purchase it, but it was nice! I loved our sleep sacks too.
My list for baby #2 is similar. We did get the Ergo newborn insert as I loved the Ergo when my daughter was a little bit older and it was so easy to put on by myself. Otherwise, pump and save bags, lanolin, diapers, 2nd diaper pail, 2nd sound machine, pacis, new baby monitor with 2 cameras, and rock n play (don’t think these existed when my daughter was a baby?!?). We’re skipping the double stroller for now as my daughter doesn’t like to sit in ours right now anyway.
Also, love the hands free pumping bra. I had 2 from last time and they were a game changer!
Which baby monitor did you get with the two cameras?
We got the Motorola MBP36. I can’t speak to how well it works with 2 cameras since we’re expecting baby #2 any day and just have it hooked up to an empty room for camera 2, but we love it for our toddler. It pans and zooms which is amazing and I love that it also gives you the temperature of the room the camera is in (wish I had that for my daughter when she was a baby!). It also allows you to talk through the camera which my toddler gets a kick out of.
Absolutely LOVED the Boppy Lounger!! I would say it is a MUST have!
We had the same thought with getting the sleep giraffe to distinguish from the well loved sleep sheep my son already had. He promptly stole the giraffe from baby girl and had two sleep animals in his bed. The baby insert for the ergo would be nice to have though; I “wore” my daughter everywhere her first few weeks when trying to keep up with a 2 year old.
I’m wondering what you plan on doing for a stroller? I use a stroller as my primary mode of transport during the week so I definitely needed a double. Are you not planning on getting one?
If you don’t want to shell out for that pumping bra just cut two holes in an old sports bra. That worked for me. Speaking of pumping, I bought new accessories from the Medela site. I definitely don’t regret doing that because the fresh tubing and such made the pump more efficient for me. I didn’t do this until a few weeks in with Ali.
Brittany Dixon says
I’m not actually planning on buying a double stroller upfront. H likes walking everywhere and doesn’t sit in the stroller for longer than a few minutes at a time, so I don’t see us using it much. If we do need it, I’ll probably put H in the stroller and where the baby.
We may get one down the road if we think it’s necessary, but they are pricey and since I’m not sure we will use it, we are holding off.
Great tip on the old sports bra!
Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life says
I had an oversupply issue with my daughter and ended up pumping and freezing a lot of milk! I bought bulk of the honeysuckle breastmilk bags from amazon because they were so much cheaper, and I found they were just as strong and thick as the more expensive Medela and Lansinoh brands you buy at the store!
Brittany Dixon says
I’ll check them out- thank you!! 🙂
The Boppy Newborn Lounger was my BFF with Wyatt. I hope it’s as awesome this time around, too.
So far, all we’ve bought is girl clothes, the double BOB, nipple shields, and more burp cloths. I’m sure there’s a ton of stuff I’m forgetting though!
Mrs FF says
My must have is a bouncy chair. Our LG battled with reflux and has to be kept upright a lot, this was a live saver. And onesies that open all the way, I was always nervous about putting anything over the wiggly baby head
Mrs FF says
Ps: one thing I realised I wouldn’t buy certain items until after baby is here. I bought all the breast pads, creams, breast milk bags etc and now it is all just sitting unused as I have extremely low supply. Wish I wasn’t thousdands of miles away would have sent them to you.
My husband just walked by and saw me reading about featuring a breast pump bra. “What the hell is that”? Hahaha.
I don’t know anything about anything when it comes to baby stuff, but I do think that bunny is the cutest thing ever and I kind of want one. Oh and I bought my friend those Aden and Anais swaddler blankets for her second child and she squealed, screamed and hugged them, so I think those are good?
Awesome post! I can give feedback on almost all of your wishlist items! (luckily I had them for my first, so I won’t need too much for this 2nd one coming)
— hands-free pumping bra — absolute must!!! I too had oversupply, and this was a complete necessity for me. Before, I was pumping one side at a time, this way I could pump both sides hands-free. Complete game changer. Absolute must when you have a toddler, I imagine. Oh man, it’s been so long since I was engorged and needing to pump…not exactly looking forward to that again!!
— pump & save bags — I had so much extra milk in the beginning, these stored nice and neatly in my freezer. Any brand should work.
— Dr Browns bottles – we only bought the newborn set, and waited till she was born to see if we needed anymore bottles. Turns out she had reflux, so these were the very best bottles for us!! I didn’t mind all the extra parts (people complain about cleaning them). In reality, we only used the bottles for a few months anyway — in the beginning, to help give mom a break during nighttime feedings, and we used them exclusively for about a week to give my damaged nipples a break due to her tongue tie. (sorry, tmi?) I like Dr. Brown’s! Tip: you can go buy a preemie nipple for the Dr Brown’s bottles, if you think the size 1 that comes with the set is too fast in the beginning.
— Ergo insert – We bought the Ergo before she was born, but waited until she was born to see if we needed the infant insert. (based on all the Amazon reviews that said it was a waste of money). Turns out, we didn’t need it. She was born 7lbs, but turned into a chunk in a couple months, and we never felt she needed the insert. She would have outgrown it way too fast to make it worth it. We used the Moby for the first few weeks mostly.
–Aden+Anais burpy bibs – we have these too, love them!
— Boppy newborn lounger — we have this, and we loved it. She outgrew it so fast (I think it was by 3 or 4 months?), that it still looks brand new. I’ve been passing it out to all other new moms, so they can use it too and not spend a fortune for so little time…which reminds me, I have to get it back before this one is born…
— My #1 most loved baby item from the first pregnancy?? The BabyBjorn Babysitter Balance. It was a total lifesaver, and I imagine will be even better this time around with a toddler. It folds up nice and flat for storage, and travels easily. Our daughter outgrew her swing (she was a chunk) pretty quickly, but still was able to use this until she was a year old!! She LOVED kicking in it, and it contained her when I needed to do things hands-free (like shower). I got mine used for $50 on Craigslist. Best $50 I ever spent.
For our second kiddo we actually needed quite a few things especially since we had a boy for our first and a girl for our second and our boy is still using his convertible crib turned into a toddler bed. With our son I had a ring sling and a Baby Bjorn and he never seemed to enjoy either… he would tolerate the ring sling as he got older, but this time around I got an Ergo with infant insert and our little lady is slowly getting used to it. It’s so much more comfortable for both of us then the Baby Bjorn and gives her a little more wiggle room than the ring sling as well as more neck support The one thing our little girl absolutely adores is her Fisher-Price Rainforest Peek-A-Boo mobile. it’s one of her favorite things when she isn’t in a bouncy chair watching her brother or being carried around. For bath time, the Leachco Flipper 2 way baby bather has been a lifesaver and allows me to safely wash our newborn in the tub with my son.

i recommend just using a rolled up blanket in the ergo. works the same as the infant insert and no cost:)
I tried that bra but didn’t like it – it’s very bulky. I’m really small chested, though…even when I’m nursing. I just bought some cheap sport bras and cut holes in the nipple area. That worked well to pump hands-free.
I echo the “pumping bra” comments- just use an old sports bra and cut holes for the nipples. Sexy yes?! 😉 However, works great and use the $$ you save to buy something else on your “want” list.
Also – ergo infant insert – SO much easier than using a rolled up towel. (and so much more comfy for the baby, or so I think). This is something I would spend a litte extra $$ on.
I don’t know how warm it is going to be where you live, but I had a July baby and that Ergo insert is hot! We never used it because it made me and baby overheat. I used the Moby wrap (which is difficult to get the hang of, but I loved it!) when she was small, and we transitioned to the Ergo without the insert around 6 months old.
You are going to love that pumping bra. I pump at work and sometimes at home and love having my hands free.
I have to say, my favorite most recommended baby product splurge is the 4moms mamaroo swing. God bless that thing! It was the only thing my baby would nap in until she was 6 months old. I also highly recommend the Miracle Blanket. It really is a miracle!
Definitely some sort of hands free pumping bra, we used the rock and play for a bit but I also bought a small swing that was low and portable and I could move easily. Davis lived in that thing. I have a boppy newborn lounger that I never really used but have heard people swear by it if you would like it, you are welcome to it. We probably won’t be trying for a third for a couple more years so I won’t need it anytime soon. Paci’s, new aden and anais swaddling blankets, and absolutely get new pump parts. The tubing and new flanges for sure. They are pretty cheap. Can’t believe you’ll have another little girl in just over 2 months!!! So exciting!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Here’s a random and cheap thing that I love with Addie … the Nose Frida! It’s about $15 on amazon. The concept looks gross, but it works about a million times better than the aspirators you get at the hospital for sucking out baby boogers! 😉
If we are lucky enough to have a second child I will also be getting new nursing bras – I hated mine the first time around so I threw them all away so I will be forced to get new ones. I would also like a different diaper bag.
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Love the newborn insert on the Ergo! I used it all the time with the girls when they were itty bitty.
As far as the milk storage bags go, those kind are pretty expensive. The perk is that you can pump right into them, but if you’re not opposed to pumping into a bottle and then transferring them to bags, it might be worth the extra $$ saved!
And I couldn’t live without my nursing bra. TMI, but pumping & typing at the same time right now (and also spilling milk all over my pants because I’m not paying attention. Crap.)
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I was ALL about my hands free pumping bra, especially when I was exclusively pumping those first few months! They’re so convenient. I loved our Ergo infant insert too. My only complaint was that it got pretty hot since we were using it the summer. But I did feel confident that Hunter was snug and safe!
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables says
We just got the Ergo with the insert and we LOVE it!! I’m still trying to figure out what all I need for our 1st one! Crazy!!
I echo the other’s regarding the nursing bra. I cut holes (sexxay) in an old sorts bra and it worked great! I would pump in my office at work and could actually type and get stuff done. It was great and cost nothing. Although spills = stinky so make sure you have more than one 🙂
Madeline @ Food Fitness and Family says
I never ended up using the insert with Bryn for the Ergo. I LOVED my Sakura Bloom sling this time around. We really didn’t buy very much at all for B since she and Em are even the same season for clothes. I make an effort to make sure she gets some new ones though 😉
I use the ergo all the time with #2, you really don’t need the insert. You can use blankets to make them more secure. As an experienced pumper (sigh) lansinoh storage bags are my favorite. Just pour milk into them & freeze flat. My must haves: A&A swaddle blankets, swaddle me Velcro thing, rock n play sleeper, pampers size 1 swaddlers, sound machine, boppy, passy, night light that projects stars on ceiling. I also really love my single bob stroller & we just broke down and bought the double. I think I’ve used it every day that we’ve had it!
We don’t need a ton but there are some major items that we loved with Edith that we would like to have again. Since we moved cross country and sold most of our unnecessary items and well we didn’t (at the time) plan on having #2 we don’t have a lot of items. I am on the fence about getting another boppy newborn lounger unless I can find it for a good price used because of it’s short life but I did love it with E. We also need to get a toddler bed for E, clothes (we aren’t finding out the sex but regardless I only have 6 mos + clothes right now.
I haven’t read all of the recs, but I highly recommend the Lansinoh bags over the Medela ones. I also recommend Lansinoh’s new MOmma bottles over Dr. Brown. We used Dr. B for our first, Playtex Nurser’s for our 2nd, and now just switched to the Lansinoh bottle b/c it’s preferred (he uses the Nurser’s at daycare though).
Not sure if you have a Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit – but I WISH I had known about it, because I would have used it over swaddling (which I don’t mind, but damn it was hard to move E out of the Rock n Play).
Oh – and I LOOOOOOOVE me some wubbanub pacifers. E took one once he was a few hours old. My 2nd is thumb sucker (which you can’t take away) – so I’m THRILLED that E is taking a pacifier.
I absolutely loved the boppy lounger when my daughter was little. The Ergo is fantastic too however, it was challenging for me to get her little legs and feet situated right in the insert even after watching “how to” youtube videos so I ended up using the Ergo around 5 months and used a Moby wrap instead. Second time around I think on would like to splurg on a super comfy glider and ottoman.
My biggest ‘need’ was a stocked basket of goods (diapers, wipes, pacis, bottles, bibs, a change of clothes) on every floor of the house. My 18 mo old wasn’t quite ready to be left alone while I tended to the newborn’s diapering, feeding, etc. It’s easiest to all stay together but, as we know, toddlers like to roam! I also found it helpful to have a safe place to put the baby (swing, pack n play) when I needed to put my toddler down for a nap or prepare a meal. Planning ahead was more useful than any of the gear I bought from a store!
I was on the fence about the Ergo baby infant insert and tried receiving blankets/prefolds as many people suggested, but finally just bought the insert when my baby girl was around 10 weeks old. It was really cozy and fit so much better, and we continued to use the little bottom cushion after she didn’t need the outer shell (she’s a little shorty like me). It’s priced pretty reasonably at less than $30 and I was able to pass ours on to a friend… I would say move that to the “necessity” list! we loved it!
I agree that a Rock n’ play sleeper is also pretty handy!
That nursing bra IS sexy 😉
With our second who is now 8 months we bought
Rock and play…a must with her reflux but also nice to set her in when I took a shower etc.
Joovy boob best bottle on the market and of course the only one I can get her to take.
Joovy sit and stand stroller as well as a double jogger
I started with Medala bags but due to the price, I quickly switched to the Honeysuckle bags previously mentioned and also the Target Up and Up brand. They are both just as great! And the honeysuckle bags are eco friendly. I’m also really into baby wearing and I love my girasol ring sling.
For baby 2, we’re planning on getting a double stroller (we live in a busy city, so walking an 18 month old around is out of the question); a new crib — we have a 4-1 crib for our toddler that converts to a toddler bed, so she will keep it for at least a few months after the new baby arrives; new pacifiers, BM storage bags and bottle nipples. The Dr. Browns bottles survived the first baby well, but the nipples, sadly, have been lost/chewed up.
I’d also like a new carrier. I hated the Moby (so much material, and such a pain) and a sling (so flimsy) that I had with baby 1, and although I liked our Babybjorn active carrier, I’d prefer to have something softer to wear around the house. I am thinking the ktan? Any experience?
Finally, a big, big endorsement for pumping bras. I don’t know how I would have gotten through 14 months of nursing and pumping at work without one (or two).
And someone mentioned the babybjorn babysitter balance? I loved mine so much, I have two. I travel a lot, and this is portable, comfortable, and awesome.
Great useful comments as we are expecting number 2 in April. The ERGO is a must, but even more so I would recommend the BOBA wrap, especially in the first few weeks. It was a life saver with number 1, and I had my hands back while baby was sleeping and loving the BOBA. I have bought this for many of my friends who all loved it.
I have recently purchased something called cooconababy http://www.cocoonababy.com.au/
which was recommended to me by a couple of friends, not sure if you can get in the states ( I am in Australia) but worth checking out i think. Also, not sure if its just a gimmick but just bought the ”Blooming Bath”
Oh and the swaddles : ”love to dream swaddle” were great, too http://www.lovetodream.com/
Not sure if a need a breastpump, but is it a Medela double pump that everyone swears by?
It’s great you were all set for baby #2 so soon! Did you end up with all of your wants in addition to the necessities?
