Wow, haven’t I been all serious the past two days, huh? I’ve REALLY enjoyed reading your comments and appreciate the feedback, and today I’m ready to lighten things up a bit!
1. David worked ridiculously late last night. When he isn’t here I get pretty lazy with cooking, so I ate a sweet potato and black beans for dinner. I stuck the chicken in the freezer for next week. Take that, budget!
2. Hailey will be 2 in about 3 weeks (AHHH!). We decided to get her a kitchen set. To test things out, I took her to Discovery Place Kids yesterday where she played nonstop with plastic food items in the grocery and in the kitchen at the restaurant. Success! Now, I’m ridiculously excited to see her face when she opens her OWN kitchen!
3. I posted a picture of a Stitch Fix (<—affiliate link- thank you!) necklace on instagram last night and rolled with laughter reading some of your responses. I appreciated it so much, I figured I get your thoughts on all the items… please excuse these completely self-indulgent photos. I feel like Cher Horowitz.
Which ones should I keep? …
THEA PONTE SKATER SKIRT

*Fun fact: I don’t actually own a skirt, so I’m leaning towards yes?

PEACOCK GEMS NECKLACE
$34
PENELOPE POLKA DOT LACE DETAIL SWEATER

*Fun fact- it felt like a pajama top- so comfy! …but isn’t $78 a bit much for a pajama top?
JANA BOWED DETAILED STRIPE TOP
$48
*Fun fact- I want this one. Why? This:
and finally…
VIOLA COWL NECK SWEATER
$68
*Fun fact: like to bold color, but couldn’t wear it to Georgia’s first game of the season
4. What kind of shoes do New Yorkers wear? I want to be comfy, but cute when we visit next month. Boots? Sandals? Toms? Tennis shoes? HELP!
5. I’m just finishing up reading Tina Fey’s BOSSYPANTS. Though we may not see eye to eye on some things, there is no denying that she is pretty darn funny. I recommend it if you are into snarky humor.
6. I may be lost in figuring out my own style, but I nailed this autumn outfit for Hailey. Thank you Zulily (<—affiliate link) for posting dresses at up to 75% off! I can’t wait to see H in this!
7. OK. Here is my final ramble- vlog #4: healthy tips on the go, Koda talk, how I handle tantrums and more! PS- I’ve officially lost my mind. You’ll see. I’m sorry to all of those that thought I might be cool enough to be friends with in real life. Clearly, I am not.
Shari says
BOSSYPANTS is hilarious! I remember literally laughing out loud at times!
Emily says
Um, now that you’re asking for our opinions-I’ve honestly thought virtually all of the StitchFix tops look too big on you! You work hard to eat right and you have a good figure, and the tops you’ve gotten so far have always seemed kind of drape-y and not as flattering as they could be. Just my two cents! Also, although you definitely should have a skirt if you don’t have one, I’m not particularly loving that one. I’ve been loving the thoughtful posts lately, though! (and your vlogs 🙂 I for one would not mind if you did them more often! )
Martha says
I agree. I think you could do waaaay better. You have an amazing figure and those tops don’t do anything for you. The only one I would consider is the pj one 🙂
erin says
Totally agree with the skirt comment. I don’t think the cut of this skirt is right for you. I think you would look much better in a pencil skirt or something more fitted. Pairing it with this top also cuts you in half.
Brittany Dixon says
Thank you for the feedback! I think I got so excited about the idea of the skirt, I didn’t care what it looked like. However, I truly don’t know what I’d wear with it or where I’d wear it. I’m not quite sure how to strike the balance between dressing with more fitted pieces and looking trashy. I tend to always go baggier up top. Any suggestions or links so I could get ideas? THANKS!
Cori @ olivetorun says
Love, love, love Bossypants. Have you read Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me by Mindy Kaling? I read those two back to back… lots of laughing in my house that week 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
I should totally read that one next! I love Mindy!!
Karen says
I love the skirt and orange sweater…so cute!! A girl always needs a go-to skirt and that one looks perfect! Can’t wait to watch the video today and you are super cool!! Have a great weekend!
Paulina says
Ohhh, I like the cowl-neck sweater a lot. The stripped shirt was just meh until I saw the little bow details, so cute. Bossypants has been on my reading list forever. Loved the intro to your vlog today, and the “tips with a P” made me laugh out loud and almost choke on my oatmeal! Happy Friday!!
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
LOVE the bow shirt! Super cute! I just saw a bunch of super cute fake fruits and veggies online at IKEA the other day. In case you need some for her kitchen. I really like the Melissa and Doug ones though since they are non-toxic and my son loves to wash them from time to time 🙂 The kitchen will be a hit!
Brittany Dixon says
We have a couple Melissa and Dough that I love! I think my parents are snagging a few food items to stock her kitchen with, too. She’s going to FLIP!
Lindsey says
Love the striped top with bows! I also like the pajama top but you are right $78 is a tad steep..
I went to NYC in December so it was cooler but I still wore ballet flats on warmer days and then (riding) boots the other days
julia says
i’ve loved the serious and non-serious posts all week…. 🙂
regarding the clothes–I wouldn’t keep any of them. they seem a bit frumpy–wish they were a bit more fitted looking.
Brenda says
I agree with Julia. You can do way better than what stitch fix sent you. If $70 ish dollars per item is cool with you, maybe check out Francesca’s Collection, Anthropologie, or even GAP. Also, what if you did a link party and everyone linked up their favorite article of clothing (or something similar). It might be fun and give you ideas!
Audrey @ In Shape Cupcake says
I am getting a Stitch Fix today! So excited! I really love the striped shirt with the ribbons on the sleeves. Adorable!
Brittany Dixon says
Stitch Fix day is always so exciting, isn’t it?! Hope you love it!
Brittany from CountingMyCupcakes says
I love your vlogs! And I looooooovvvve the bow detailed top!!! That is a must-keep.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I get excited when we eat a super a cheap meal that still tastes delicious. 🙂 I always brag to Cody…this meal only cost us 5 dollars and isn’t it AMAZING?! Haha.
As for your Stitch Fix items (P.S. I love this game), the skirt is cute, and I LOVE the striped bow tie top. And the “pajama top”, like you said, cute, but not sure $78 is worth it? I like the orange sweater, but I go back and forth with orange. You can totally pull off the color though, so I say go for it if you don’t have anything like it!
Tawny says
LOVE the striped shirt with the bows! So cute! The “pajama top” didn’t wow me, but the orange cowl neck sweater is a really great colour on you. I hope StitchFix starts shipping to Canada soon!
char eats greens says
I think I love all of your stitch fix picks this week!! Really love the polka dot!! And the striped. Gah, I need a stitch fix box!!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
I liked listening to what you had to say about tantrums. We obviously aren’t there yet (she’s only 4 months), but it’s a topic I’m already thinking about and wondering how I’ll handle it!
Lauren B. says
I still think we could be friends. 🙂
I love the striped top with the bows! So so cute.
Happy weekend to you all!
Maria says
Oh man, when you post all these things, I have to somehow organize my comments.
1. My favorite things from your Stitch Fix is the overpriced sweater – go figure. It would look great with a pair of skinny jeans and ballet flats. I think you should try a pencil skirt with a little stretch. It would look great on you! Gap and BR sell petite ones and some with more casual fabric for weekends.
2. Bossypants was a fantastic read. I don’t agree with everything in it either, but she’s quite the writer/storyteller. And I want to be friends with Amy P.
3. Adorable: H’s dress and your shirt in the video.
Have a fantastic weekend, friend!
Brittany Dixon says
What color ballet flats? I told you- I need help- haha! Will you do some more fashion posts so I can just copy you? 🙂
Maria says
I’d pair the sweat with black jeans/pants and some red or nude ballet flats for fall and brown boots in the winter. I love the combo of all black and brown boots.
Oh gosh, I am not qualified. I just pretend that I know what I’m doing. Fake it til you make it!
Halsy says
It’s no fun when the husband works late but the plus for me is usually cereal for dinner or super easy meal like you said! I like the stripe shirt with the bow detail. Super cute dress for Hailey and a kitchen set sounds like a great gift. It sounds like she will love it!
heyhey says
Crazy Hailey is almost 2! If you don’t own a skirt, I’d keep it, but I’d pair it with a more form fitting top since the skirt flares. I’d definitely keep the necklace. Of the shirts, I like the polka dot one best on you. But I can’t really see the lace detail, so not totally sure about it. The stripes look cute too, but as much as you think the shoulders are cute, I almost think it makes it look a bit cheap, like from a Juniors section (sorry, I know you like that part!). I say steer more toward classic looks and make them fun with accessories and shoes.

Gracie at girlmeetslife would be a wealth of information for you regarding New York life! My second favorite blog, besides yours!
Whitney says
Just because you are a mom doesn’t mean you should dress like one! I am 28 and like to shop at Urban Outfitters, Francesca’s, Target, TJMaxx to name a few. Emily Maynard has a blog that I read and get a lot of style inspiration. Emilymaynard.com. I usually do either a fitted top with a looser bottom or vice versa. Good Luck!! 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Burnnnnnn – haha! I don’t want to dress like a mom- really! That’s why I’m asking for help 🙂 I’ll check out Emily’s blog. Thanks for the rec 🙂
Ali says
I would only keep the orange sweater. Way more flattering skirts out there for you.
New Yorker shoes? Are you serious? ANYTHING. ANYTHING GOES. Bring something comfy for walking during the day (flats, sneakers or toms). I would watch the weather foR NYC for the coming weeks – either heels or boots for night outings. For the theatre, it’s changed….some people will go in shirts and a tee and others will show up decked to the 9s. So, once again, anything goes. Wear what you feel good in. Plan to layer. Plan a cross body small purse to carry only essentials – tourists tend to draw attention to pick pocketers. Wear your purse in your front all the time when walking and shopping. Have Hubby keep his wallet in his front pocket. Seriously.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
What, I love the start of the vlog! 😉
I’m a New Yorker, and when I go to the city, I like wearing Toms. If the temps are cool enough, comfy boots are a nice choice.
Have a great weekend!
JenRD says
I love the orange top the most, and agree that the other tops are too baggy on you, and the skirt isn’t the best.
As for what shoes to wear in NYC, I am sure you guys will take advantage of what a great walking city it is, so whatever you do, wear shoes that can take the mileage without giving you mean blisters! My suggestion would be to pack a pair of very comfortable walking shoes/sneakers (or tennis shoes, as you Southerners say!) for the day, and for night, a pair of cute boots, pumps, or ballet flats, depending on what else you pack and what the weather will be like. It is hit or miss here in September, so check the forecast online a few days before you leave to finalize your packing. I am so excited for you! It will be neat to see you experience NYC for the first time!
JenRD says
Oh and I would def be your friend “in real life”. In fact, your Vlog makes you seem even more down-to-earth and gives your blog dimension. I’m not sure if I already wrote this in a previous post comment, but definitely feel free to email me if you want specific ideas of what to do, where to eat in NYC
Amanda says
Tips — with a P!!! HAHAHA! Loved that!
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
I’m looking for a new book and have meant to read Tina’s book for ages. Thanks for the reminder about it 🙂
I wish they had style fix here in Australia.
Erica says
My favorite part of your vlogs are the captions on the videos – you are so funny!
Bonnie says
Ok where to start….
First let me say I have a daughter your age & my granddaughter is also going to be 2 on 9/15. I adore my daughter & grand… You are a funny, smart, wonderful mom/woman/blogger (& vlogger, love them!). I wish I had a friend like you when I was your age!!! I live in N J & go into “the city” ( that’s what we call manhattan) all the time. I lived there when my daughter was born…
Next clothes… Like many I think most of them are too big & baggy. “tight” I would callit fitted… Tight is trashy but fitted means that it fits you well. I tend to like classic but a piece or two of trendy (like forever 21 or the cheaper trendy stores we have in the mall) not expensive so if it’s out of style next yr you don’t care 😉 I like Petites ( im also 5’1″) in Gap, Anne Taylor Loft, Macy’s (don’t know if you have Macy’s by you… They have one in NYC !). You def need skirt or 2 like pencil. Check out weather forecast but people in ny wear anything & everything !! Daytime walking go for comfort… sneakers, sandles or Toms. Nitetime sandles, wedges, or boots if colder… It’s been very warm here the last week or so. Sundress & cardigan works. With your slight southern drawl everyone will know you are tourist lol keep your eyes open & your purse/body bag close!
Also looking forward to hearing bout you & trip to NYC !! It’s a big wonderful city w lots to do & see. People here tend to forget & take it for granted… I love to take out of towners & do touristy things.. Almost like seeing things thru your child’s eyes 🙂
My daughter, SIL & granddaughter are coming… We are having fun !!!
Enjoy your weekend !!!
nicole @ making good choices says
I like the striped top. You’ll be fine in any type of shoes really. It may be too early for boots next month depending on the weather, but toms, sneakers, ballet flats are all good.
and um…you’re coming to NY? is it all family fun? if you’re doing any type of meet up or have any down time (which i totally get if you don’t have any time) let me know!
John J. says
Enjoyed the blog! Your naturalness, openness, and good advice works well in the vlog mode.
Lauren K says
I really don’t have much fashion sense myself but here are some thoughts…if you keep the looser fitting tops, match them with dark wash skinny (very fitted) jeans, black skinny jeans or a black ponte knit skinny pant. Then pair with ballet flats or some fun nude pumps for at night! With your figure you could also go fitted top with a skinny pant and just make sure the top is longer so everything doesn’t look cropped. Depending on weather, match with a fun, long necklace or an infinity scarf!
I know this probably seems weird, but for the statement necklace I actually just bought mine at the Charlotte airport (turquoise one from vaca)! I had some time and there is a store that had tons of different bauble necklaces for $10 (comes with earrings too). Considering I don’t know how long these will be “in style”, I thought it was a good find!
Bryan says
Hey Brittany. Maybe I should give Bossypants a quick read. My fiancee has it and have been woken up twice by her muffled snorts.
Love your video by the way. What a bubbly woman!
