You guys provided such helpful feedback on my last Stitch Fix (<– affiliate link) post, that I was hoping to ask you to take a look one more time. It’s mind blowing to me how something that I feel like looks good in the mirror tuns out completely different in a picture. This time I tried to channel my inner fashion model (yes, these pictures are actually me ‘trying’) so you could get a good feel for the outfit.
First up…
Waters Printed Maxi Dress – $68
Though I am awaiting your feedback, I really want to keep this one. Finding a maxi dress that I can wear flat sandals with is incredibly hard (5’1″ remember?) and it is SO comfortable. Bonus points because I can wear a regular bra.
Berneen Printed Dolman Sleeve Top – $58
Comfy, something I would probably find easy to throw on. Not too baggy. But possibly could find something similar at Target, right? Thoughts?
Melissa Mixed Geo Print Pencil Skirt – $48
Does my discomfort shine through the screen? It felt tight and honestly I have no idea where I would wear something like this.
Canon Button Detail Striped Knit Top – $48
I like this one. Can you tell I have an affinity for stripes? It’s more fitted than another striped top I have, so I think that’s good. Plus it’s something I would realistically throw on in the fall.
However, can we also talk about those booties I’m trying to wear? My “skinny” jeans don’t know how to go with them. Do I tuck them in? Do I get my jeans altered so they are tight and fitted at my ankle? Do I pull them over the edge of the booties (Like I did here)? Once you stop laughing, please let me know the correct way to wear these… or if I should just not do this trend.
Maxwell Embellished Neckline Knit Top – $48
Not bad, but doesn’t really do anything for me either. Comfortable. Ha, can you tell what my priority is?
A lot of you mentioned that Stitch Fix item tend to be looser fitting, which may be why a lot of these don’t turn out to be keepers for me. Being on the shorter side, I usually do better with more tailored clothes. I’m hoping to do a BIG closet clean out soon (not that I have so many extra clothes, but just that I have so many that I never wear), then write a list of what I need and try, as so many of you suggested, making at appointment at Nordstroms so I can get some help. I’m not a big shopper and don’t need a lot of clothes, but I would really love a closet that only contains clothes I like to wear.
As always, thanks for your feedback and have a fabulous Friday!
Which fashion do you love for this upcoming fall?
Are you a booties fan?
Do you ignore trends and just go with what works for your body?
Nicole says
LOVE LOVE LOVE the maxi dress! Keep for sure!
Alanna says
The maxi dress is cute, although a little loose, and I feel like chevron print is heading out of style now, but this print isn’t your typical chevron so I’d keep it since you love it!
The long sleeve tops are all great options for casual fall days – I do wonder if you could get something similar somewhere else that’d be even better quality for the same price?
As far as the ankle boots, the most common way is to sort of roll your jeans up into a cuff so the whole boot shows. (If you google or look on Pinterest “how to wear ankle boots” there will be images showing many different options!)
Brittany Dixon says
Ahhh how did I not think to google it? I feel silly. I will definitely check that out and maybe add ‘for short girls’ on the end of it. Thanks for he feedback! 🙂
MC says
Also the cuff is literally a half inch wide – you just do two tiny roll-ups and flatten it out so it’s not bulky. Though, I guess you could do a wider one, but you’d need to roll boyfriend jeans. Basically the looser the jean, the wider the width of the cuff. I stayed away from booties for maybe two years? Till I finally figured this out. I’m your height so I can tell you it made a huge difference once I got the hang of it!
Nikki says
Definitely keep the maxi dress — so cute! I wasn’t too, too impressed by anything else. I did StitchFix for a couple of months and would get, like, one item a month that I LOVED and everything else looked like something I could buy elsewhere for like 1/4 the price. I ended up putting it on hold this month — just couldn’t do it again!
Jerrica says
I just broke up with it too this month! I loved getting it but I would never keep more than one item and I felt like I kept that just to spare my $20. Two of my favorite tops are literally falling apart so I feel better about going to kohls and spending way less!
Jessica says
I love that striped top on you! The color of the jeans works well too. I think you’d need slimmer fit jeans though to wear with booties – something like the dark jeans in the picture below it! I either roll my skinnies up so a few inches is between the cuff and the top of the bootie, or wear ankle skinnies so there’s no excess material to bunch. Pinterest is a big help for me in the styling dept. 🙂 Above all, if you don’t feel comfortable with a trend, don’t force it! #youdoyou
Brittany Dixon says
I’m always so focused on food on pinterest that I forget it’s overflowing with fashion! I’ll go play around with that too- thanks!
Jaci says
The skinniest-fold the pants up just to the top of the bootie 🙂
Lori C says
I’m also fashion challenged, so I cannot offer much help in that department. I did, however, love the skirt on you. I have 2 small kiddos similar in age to yours, so I know comfortable and practical is the most important feature at this time in our lives. I stumbled onto a blog I feel has really helped me some with fashion, Pinterest Told Me To. I also browse pinterest when I have a rare moment of time. I think I will have to try a stylist at Nordstrom, too. If you do it, I’d love to read your feedback on the blog.
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I think my favorite piece is the maxi dress. While I don’t have any myself, they look super comfy.
Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood says
Maxi and striped shirt are for SURE keepers. That first shirt is cute, but too expensive for my Target tastes ahaha
Karen says
Hi, I love the maxi dress, I think it looks great on you and if you are comfortable and feel good, keep it. I love the striped shirt the best out of the rest of the pieces. The skirt looks great on you, but if you won’t wear it, why keep it…
I just came across this link about ankle boots, I have no idea how to do it either so I found this interesting. Take look…
http://www.babble.com/style/10-ways-to-wear-ankle-boots-and-tips-to-keep-those-outfits-balanced/
Brittany Dixon says
I just clicked over and they all look so good on the model! I always feel goofy when I try to roll them up, but maybe I just need to give it a try. Thanks so much for the link!!
Shannon says
I agree with everyone else! Maxi dress is super cute and YES! for being able to wear a regular bra. Gosh that’s such an under appreciated feature in tops/dresses! Also think the striped shirt is cute and looks like a perfect go-to with jeans for fall. I actually liked the skirt on you, from the distance of the pic, it didn’t look tight at all. You could wear that outfit to church? But if you didn’t feel comfortable in it, I’m sure you could find something you like better. Now, one last comment overall – Girl, you need to get some more skinny jeans!! The jeans in the last pic are perfect for your figure! That shirt though…The style is cute but the color (at least in the pic) isn’t doing anything for you. 🙂
Al says
Keep the maxi dress and that’s it. Xoxo
Niki @ Life With Niki says
The Maxi dress is the absolute cutest thing ever on you!
My favorite fall trend is just a classic pair of riding boots paired with a long, slightly oversized cardigan and a scarf :).
Brittany Dixon says
I need some oversized cardigans in my life! I have the hardest time finding ones I like though. With the outfit you mentioned, do you wear weans or leggings?
Niki @ Life With Niki says
If you want something quick and cheap, I would definitely recommend forever 21 as they have a wide variety of cardigans.
However stores like Zara, H&M, and Urban Outfitters have some nice ones as well!
Funny you ask, because I actually wear them with a cross between jeans/leggings, however I usually stick to more legging type bottoms for the sake of comfort :).
Katie H says
Hi Brittany!
I am wearing a similar striped shirt from Gap that I just received yesterday- I absolutely love it and it is cheaper (especially with a sale)- I actually went and ordered it in another color last night once I tried it on 🙂
link is here-http://www.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1028724&pid=531342032
oh and I love the maxi!
Brittany Dixon says
Is the shirt fitted? It looks a little loose in the picture— love the stripes though!! Thanks 🙂
Katie H says
It isn’t fitted- it’s longer and kind of a tunic but not really, if that makes sense. It isn’t super loose or flowy though- it’s just a great fall shirt!
Brynn says
all super cute, but I’m with you, keep the dress. For the jeans, I’d do a little roll so they stop at the top of the boot. Love skinnies and short boots for the fall!
Beth says
Yep, the maxi dress is a keeper. The rest of the items didn’t wow me, although the striped shirt is cute if you really like that one.
For the booties, I second what an above poster said – you need some more true skinny jeans similar to the last photo. You can wear your booties with those jeans or you can roll your jeans up. The jeans you are wearing in the photo with the booties are not skinny, and I think that’s why they don’t work – they look more like a straight legged jean or maybe even a little bit bootcut! I also only really like flats paired with true skinny or MAYBE a very slim straight cut. Right now I feel that boot cuts only really look good with heels or maybe high heeled boots.
One blogger I like who does a lot of accessible fashion posts – and is also 5’1″ and LOVES booties is Megan from Honey We’re Home. Look her up; I think you’ll see a lot of helpful stuff there.
Brittany Dixon says
CLicking over to check her out now- THANK YOU! 🙂
kate says
I agree with the others – the maxi dress is really lovely. I’m not sold on the rest though. While I like the idea of the Breton shirt, this particular one wouldn’t be a keeper for me.
As for the skinnies: I roll mine up most of the time, but if they are really tight I sometimes just tuck them in the boots. And one idea: I’m not tall either and I always get my skinny jeans in the ankle version, if they don’t offer petite sizes…
Monika says
New reader – love love love your blog! The maxi dress is probably my favorite of all the items. It looks a tiny bit big, but I think if you cinch it at the waist with a belt it would be perfect. I personally am not a fan of Stitch Fix – I tried it once and hated everything – the fit, the look, the price – so I gave up on it quickly. You can find similar, cheaper items at Nordstrom Rack. Oh and as far as the ankle boots go, since you’re so tiny, maybe try jeggings instead of skinny jeans – they hug the legs tighter 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Love when new readers say hi! 🙂 And thanks for the feedback- I’m hot and cold on stitch fix for the same reasons. I just really need help with the styling/picking out items to try thing, so I can’t give it up!
Do you know where I can find a nice pair of jeggings? I’d totally jump on that!
Monika says
I’m 26 soon to be 27 but still get all my jeans from American Eagle! I have a pair of high waisted jeggings from there that are super comfy. My best friend who is your height or shorter gets hers from Abercrombie 🙂
Sarah says
I think you could benefit from “completer” pieces like blazers. They really tuck you in at the waist and give you more shape, plus layers are great for fall!
I have found that Stitch Fix is really great with comfy ones that feel like a sweatshirt (stretchy soft cotton) but look so much better. They’d be so stylish with all your cute tops and keep things from feeling so loose and blousy.
Brittany Dixon says
You’re right- I need to look at those. Stitch Fix sent me one onetime but I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea of a blazer, but I’m all about trying new things now. Thanks!
Briana says
I def. love the maxi dress. I think the pattern is cute, and i think it fits you well. As for the jeans/booties combo, I agree with some others. Rolled up at the cuff. I also feel like maybe the jeans aren’t quite” skinny” enough/boarderline too big/baggy near the ankle? I think the way you have them above def. doesn’t look “quite” right, though close. 🙂
Elizabeth Evans says
What we need to know is the cost after the “buy all 5 items” discount! In the 2 Fixes I’ve gotten, I’ve kept everything b/c it made the most sense. I usually ended up liking everything more than I expected! With all that said…keep everything! It’s all cute, even the pencil skirt (I bet your booty looks cute in it) you can wear it out to dinner! I have a dress in the same print as your top in the 2nd picture & I get a lot of compliments on it.
Brittany Dixon says
It’s so snug on my booty!! Not sure I’m totally comfortable with that, though for the number of squats I do each week, I should be. You bring up a good point though- I should definitely consider the buy 5 discount!
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
The maxi looks beautiful!!!
jen says
i’m in the camp of maxi and forget the rest! you look so happy and confident in the maxi picture. i agree that similar pieces to the others could be found elsewhere cheaper.
Brittany Dixon says
Thanks for the input! And you are so right, when you feel good in something, it tends to shine through unknowingly. I’m keeping the maxi! 🙂 Happy Friday!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
I love the maxi and the last two tops! Very pretty!
Kristin says
I honestly don’t love any of the pieces that much. I generally think Stitch Fix is not great quality and you are mostly paying for the styling. I do agree that the last pair of jeans you are wearing is the fit you should be looking for. If you are looking for cute and comfortable fashion, I actually have really good luck at Old Navy. They have some great transitional pieces in very pretty fall colors. If you look at the blog Penny Pincher Fashion, she does some great styling of Old Navy pieces. They do carry petites and online returns are free. Not affiliated, just have great luck there. If you would like any styling advice (former retail mgr.) there, I’d be happy to help you! Both ON and BR Factory have some great skinny jeans. Look for a fabric content including polyester and spandex, and they’ll be soft like leggings. HTH!
John J. says
They all look great! (unbiased Father comment). Also, your blogs are so popular. By mentioning my blog in yours I received 327 reads directly from it. Total was 615 which is good for me since I’m not particularly good at getting it out there. Thanks!
Tracy says
Yes yes yes on maxi dress!! And I think the skirt is super cute on you with that top. But too tight? Send it back. You won’t wear it if it’s not comfy.
I’m 5’2″ and have trouble wearing horizontal stripes… I feel like they make me look shorter?
The last tee is much too baggy on you.
Keep that dress!

Tessa says
The maxi dress is my fav! I was gifted a cute pair of Tom’s booties but I’m just not a big fan of the skinnies with booties look, so I wear them with my bootcut jeans and always get compliments!
Kate @ Indulgent Wellness says
I won’t even try to offer advice since I too lack God-given fashion sense. I can report that I have tried, and really liked, Nordstrom’s styling service. I used it for a specific occasion (family photos) – it might get pricey if you are looking to round out a whole wardrobe – they pick the pricey stuff. Another suggestion is to look for a personal stylist/shopper in your area. A friend of a friend came to my house once, evaluated my clothes, suggested outfits with what I had, told me what to toss and then helped me shop for pieces to round it out at a mall. I told her how much I wanted to spend on the shopping trip and she only took me to stores that were realistic with that budget. She charged a flat fee for the closet assessment and then hourly for the shopping.
Elle says
Love the Maxi dress!! You cAn also wear it in the fall With a sweater 🙂 I’d say no to the BootieS and everything else because of your comfort level.
Maybelline says
The maxi dress looks great on you! I would add a neutral belt (maybe brown or nude) to help define your waist. The geo skirt is awesome. I think it looks good the way you are wearing it. You can dress it down with a plain tee shirt or a chambray top. For fall, black tights, a fitted long sleeve top, and boots. the striped shirt is a keeper too. As for how to wear the booties, since you are petite you want to keep a long clean line, so skinny jeans that hit at your ankle look best. You can cuff the jeans towards the inside to achieve that.
Nancy says
Maxi is a keeper! The skirt is cute but not worth it if your aren’t comfortable. Stripe shirt may be a little boxy.
Ruth says
I feel like you need more tailored cuts. As a fellow shortie, I totally get that you can wear flats with the maxi as being exciting!!
Can’t help you with the boots. I have the same dilemma. My parents are giving me money for new clothes this birthday… What to buy!
Nicole says
Keep the maxi dress & Dolman shirt-super cute on you! Nix the last 3-they are just meh. 🙂
Julie says
I LOVE the maxi dress! I also really like the sleeveless top. Everything looks really good on you! I think the key is to keep the things that make you feel good – that are comfortable & that don’t make you feel self-conscious. I really like the skirt, but you said it feels tight, & you can’t imagine where you’d wear it so you probably shouldn’t keep it. I also wouldn’t tend to keep items that I thought I could find something similar for much cheaper. I really enjoy these posts.
Josephine asharpe says
keep the maxi, very pretty. The other pieces I don’t think are flattering. I’d love to see the results of your Nordstrom stylist shop 😉
Alise says
I really just want to get Cristy to go shopping with me and pick everything out. I feel like I have such wretched taste in clothes! 🙁
Cara says
So glad to have found your blog. . .I am having the same problem with Stitch Fix being only 5 feet tall. I am waiting on my 5th Fix and so far, they have found only 1 top that fits me properly. Every other one has been too long and by long, I mean down past my hips OR straps are so long, my bra shows out the arm holes. . .or too boxy and unflattering. Master Stylist, Katherine has taken me under her wing and promises me a Fix that will delight, even my tiny frame. We shall see! Check out my blog to see how she does! https://strugglesofahealthyfoodie.wordpress.com/

I recently had the same issue with booties. What do you do with them? Ha ha. My much more fashion-savvy sister posted this link on one of my Pinterest boards: http://www.babble.com/style/10-ways-to-wear-ankle-boots-and-tips-to-keep-those-outfits-balanced/
It changed my life! Well, that’s an exaggeration, but I do have an appreciation for booties now! I usually roll my skinny jeans up to make a cuff and leave an inch or two of my ankle exposed.
By the way, I think I may have gotten that same skirt a couple of fixes ago. That was before I started doing Stitch Fix reviews, so it’s not documented with a photo! It WAS super tight! I sympathize with your discomfort. 🙂
Love the maxi dress – it’s always a plus when the bra thing is not an issue!
