I love living in North Carolina. I usually can count on one good snow experience a season, which is ideal for me. However with the warm temperatures we’d been having, I was beginning to doubt if we’d see a winter wonderland this season, so when the buzz started last week about winter storm Jonas, I let the giddiness and anticipation sink in.
The weather experts were right and we woke up to snow on Friday morning. Though it meant cancelling an afternoon meeting and dinner reservations we had, hearing Hailey literally squeal with delight when she looked out the window made me quickly forget all about it. SNOW!
After attempting to get everyone to eat at least a little breakfast, we bundled up and headed out in our mishmash of snow gear.
The snow falling turned to freezing rain, but it didn’t deter us from finding several awesome sledding hills. Luckily we invested in a great sled a couple years ago, so we were ready!
Some hills were perfect for newbies like Kaitlyn, who much preferred walking through the crunchy snow to sledding on it.
And some hills were long runs that picked up enough speed to excite our little thrill seeker.
Hailey probably would have stayed out all day long, but I eventually coaxed her back inside with the promise of hot chocolate.
With marshmallows of course.
We made a second venture out after lunch and nap, as the snow started coming down harder.
We wore ourselves out and once we tucked our exhausted snow bunnies into bed, David and I dove head first into a bottle of wine and homemade pizza.
It was so cozy to have a fire roaring against a snowy backdrop. We ended up watching Get Hard with Will Ferrell, which I would have told you I had no interest in watching, though I ended up giggling throughout it. Perhaps it was the wine laughing?
Saturday morning we wasted no time getting back out there. The skies had cleared and the conditions were perfect for more sledding with friends.
I honestly can’t remember how we filled our afternoon. I really thought being snowed in for two days would have had me clawing at the walls, but having life force us to slow down ended up being so much fun. I’m sure the wine helped.
Saturday night we ate chili and enjoyed another evening of bumming, watching SNL clips and youtube adventures, including this fun duo.
When we woke up Sunday, it felt like a bonus weekend day, perfect for getting life back in order after having successfully trashed our house over the past two days. I meal planned and made it to the grocery store while David and the girls cleaned the house. When I got home David took off to work while I finished the laundry and prepped some breakfast burritos for the week.
By the end of the day, the house was put back together and I decided my body might be ready to eat a vegetable again.
I tossed together a mixed greens salad with craisins, pumpkin seeds, red onion and goat cheese to go with… more homemade pizza.
The girls went to bed and we watched the Panthers become Super Bowl bound (!!!) with a crushing win against the Cardinals. It was really such a beating that I felt bad for the off night Carson Palmer had, but still, if you watched the game, you have to appreciate this tweet…
OK, now I’m talking football, so clearly I lost my blogging mojo over the snowy weekend whirlwind…
Back to reality today and boy am I ready for some bootcamp and food that isn’t pizza (#thingsIneverthoughtI’dsay)
Did you see snow this weekend?
Being snowed in- love it or hate it?
Carla says
This easy coast woman now in TEXAS well admit to being jealous of all the snow. The fires. The hunkering down as a family. All of it <3
Carla says
Ahhhh well I’m EAST not EASY 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Haha- love me some typos! Sending some snow vibes your way Carla!… though it may be a long shot 😉

Can’t beat a snowy weekend with little kids. Such fun! We missed the snow while enjoying the Keys. Such fun!

Since snow in CLT happens every so often, I love how life slows down a little bit and allows me to not feel guilty for lounging for days straight. Someone told me it’s supposed to be 60 this weekend in CLT!
Brittany Dixon says
Yes 60 this weekend- whaaa?? If it’s not going to snow though, I love it 🙂

Here in Southern Germany we had snow the whole of last week, but now most of it is gone. I couldn’t live anywhere where it doesn’t snow at all, but after a week or two of snow, I’m usually done with it and ready for spring. 🙂
Ahh…. Homemade pizza. It’s on our meal plan for Friday and I’m counting down the days…

Hi! I live in Huntersville and this is our first year living here after moving from up North (NJ) – and it is so strange to see everything shut down for almost 2 days straight! And no plows or salting, etc (obviously not cost effective, and understandable!) – but I think it is nice to almost be forced to slow down and lounge for a couple days! In NJ, nothing stopped, not even for the weather they got up there this weekend! It was crazy. Loving NC weather! And look – 50’s today! 🙂 Love the picture of LKN!
Brittany Dixon says
Oh I’ll bet you are laughing hard at the closings! I’m still curious as to whether schools will be open tomorrow which is hilarious because the roads are completely dry! But yes, like you said, we don’t have the same equipment… but still 😉
skye fillmore says
I know right! I was just out and have yet to encounter any ice or slush near a road haha. If they are closed tomorrow – I am throwing in the towel!! LOL 🙂
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
We got so much snow here, too and I’m kind of loving it! It’s been fun having an excuse to just stay home for awhile 🙂 Glad you guys had fun in the snow!

I’m in GA and we saw a “dusting” but my son, 5 years old, was thrilled! My husband was home an hour early Friday and did not work Saturday. I was so spoiled and my kids were so happy for the extra time with him. We played a little outside. Hot chocolate got us inside too!
Jennifer says
haha that tweet is hilarious! We got over 2ft of snow here in Baltimore! Craziness! My 2 year old loved the snow but my 1 year old not somuch. So it was kind of tough trying to keep them both entertained while my husband was on snow removal duty. I’m looking forward to when they’re a little older and can both independently play in the snow! 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Oh my gosh I can’t even imagine 2’= crazy! Yes, last year Kaitlyn was just under 1 and I basically had to strap her in the ergo the whole time. Much more fun for all this year!
Kate @ Baking In Yoga Pants says
Haha, that tweet is fantastic! I read it to my husband this morning 🙂
Looks like y’all took full advantage of the snowy weather this weekend! We saw about 4-6 inches and used it as reason to hunker down and cook meals at home with football games on the TV and I loved having the R&R.
Hilary says
That weekend sounds so fun! I traveled up to Boone, NC this past weekend and boy it was fun and frustrating at the same time. We got some skiing in Friday and then it was cut short when we had to head back to Georgia on Saturday. But I can’t wait to head back up in March hoping it is less cold this time around!
Brittany Dixon says
Hope you had some fresh powder on Friday! I’ll bet it was pretty too 🙂
jen says
that towel interception tweet has had me cracking up since last night. what an amazing and exciting game it was!
your weekend looks really fun, sweet and homey. love seeing you and your fam! 🙂
christina says
they look so cute in their snow gear!
Brittany Dixon says
K could barely walk and basically waddled through the snow. I might have at least 10 videos of it because I couldn’t stop laughing!
Lauren @ Oh Hey! I Like That! says
I super super loved being snowed in!! Funny how my boyfriend’s friends and my roommate were dying to get out of the house, but I thought WHYYY??? It’s so amazing to slow down and relax! And that tweet is HILARIOUS! Go Panthers!!
Julie says
Ha ha love that football tweet! And that pizza looked amazing! Sounded like such a cozy night/wknd. That 1st pic of the girls (especially Kaitlyn’s cheesy grin!!!) was the BEST!!! <3 I'm from Iowa so we get our fair share of snow… I must admit that "squeal of delight" is the LAST reaction I'm gonna have to snow in the forecast! 😛 Blech!

We’ve had a really mild winter so far, so no late days and it doesn’t seem like we’ve had as much snow as usual in Minnesota. Cold temps? Yep, but not even as cold as normal. I would love a real snow-day where everything shuts down – I have never experienced that since in both Colorado and Minnesota nothing shuts down in the winter. Ha ha!
