One of the things I’m trying to do a better job at around here is revisiting old posts that still get traction and shine them up to be more helpful and visually appealing. When my kids were babies and toddlers, a large majority of my content focuses on feeding them. First it was baby led weaning, then toddler meals, tackling picky eaters, and beyond. My photography has also evolved since then; not that I’m some pro photographer, but at least my pictures aren’t blurry and poorly lit anymore.
Anyway, this is a long way to say that today I’ve shined up this post on healthy tortilla style, healthy kid-friendly wraps. Originally these were lunches I have my toddlers, but if the proof is in the pudding, I’d say these work well for any age kid because my 13 and 10 year old happily devoured these for lunch the other day while watching World Watch.
.
If you’re like me, it’s easy to get into food ruts, especially when it comes to lunch. As the weather warms up, wraps have been our thing! I’ve made breakfast wraps and salad wraps for myself, but I’m not the only one who is enjoying the trend. Kids of all ages love a wrap! So whether you’re feeding toddlers or teens, here are some good basic wrap ideas to take and make your own by adding an ingredients, toasting them in a pan, adding a dipping sauce, or just enjoying simply as is!
Healthy Kid-Friendly Wraps
I’ll fully admit that my main draw to them is their simplicity. You hardly need a wrap recipe, simply grab a flour tortilla of choice (we prefer either these tortillas or these tortillas if we can find them- it’s amazing how many tortillas contain hydrogenated oils and these don’t). Then, layer, roll and slice! These work well for packed lunches or as eat at home recipes.
Ham and Cheese Wrap
.
Ingredients: Tortilla, colby jack or cheddar jack cheese stick, deli ham.
Method: Place two slices of ham on the tortilla, then place the cheese stick on top of the ham and roll. Serve as is or put it in the microwave for 30 seconds then roll up while still warm (the cheese helps it stick together). Allow it to cool and slice with serrated knife. This wrap is perfect for wrap newbies who would appreciate a simple and reliably tasty wrap.
Optional Dippers: Mustard or ranch
Banana and Peanut Butter Wrap
.
Ingredients: Tortilla, natural peanut butter (or almond butter), banana, honey, and chia seeds.
Method: Cover the tortilla in a thin layer of peanut butter. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with chia seeds. Place the banana at the edge of the wrap and roll up. Slice the banana peanut butter wrap with serrated knife.
Optional Dippers: Put honey on the side instead of in the wrap if you child is into dipping. You could also use a jelly on the side if your child loves peanut butter and jelly.
Bean and Cheese Wrap
.
Ingredients: Tortillas, cheddar cheese stick, refried black beans, finely diced red pepper.
Method: Cover the wrap in a thin layer of refried black beans. Place the cheese stick (or use shredded cheese) on the refried beans and microwave for 30 seconds. Thinly slice red pepper (small dice) and sprinkle on in single layer. Roll up while warm, allow it to cool and slice with serrated knife.
Optional Dippers: Salsa or plain Greek yogurt whipped with lime juice and cilantro.
Cucumber Sandwich Wrap
.
Ingredients: Tortilla, spreadable cheese like Boursin, Allouette, veggie cream cheese, or Laughing Cow, and cucumber.
Method: Cover the wrap in a thin layer of the cheese. Remove the seeds from the cucumber by slicing in half length wise and scooping out with a spoon. Finely dice the cucumber and sprinkle in a thin layer on the cheese. Roll up and slice with a serrated knife.
Hummus and Veggie Wrap
.
Ingredients: Tortilla, hummus, finely diced red pepper and cucumber.
Method: Cover the wrap in a thin layer of hummus. Remove the seeds from the cucumber by slicing in half length wise and scooping out with a spoon. Finely dice the cucumber and sprinkle in a thin layer on the cheese. Finely dice the red pepper and sprinkle on as well. Gently roll up and slice with a serrated knife.
Optional Dippers: Tzatziki
Of course, the wonderful thing about wraps is that the possibilities are endless! Some other delicious and nutritious combos include:
Chicken Wrap
Ingredients: Shredded chicken and shredded lettuce rolled up inside a tortilla. Either include mustard or mayo in the wrap, or keep it simple and put a yummy dip like ranch on the side.
Pizza Wrap
Ingredients: Tortilla with a thin layer of pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, and pepperoni. Roll up and microwave for 30 seconds before allowing to cool and slice. Ranch is surprisingly delicious on the side of this wrap or you can use extra pizza sauce.
BLT Wrap
Ingredients: Smashed avocado thinly spread on a tortilla topped with thinly sliced tomato or small diced grape tomatoes and sprinkled with crumbled bacon.
Tuna Salad Wrap
Ingredients: Take a simple tuna salad (may I recommend a recipe with sweet relish– the kids love it) and place it in a tortilla. Roll and slice gently.
Apple Cinnamon Wrap
Ingredients: Tortilla, thinly spread cream cheese, a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar, small diced or shredded apple. Roll and slice.
Of course the possibilities are endless. Switch up the ham and turkey by using salami or roast beef instead. Wrap a pickle in the tortilla instead of a cucumber. Use crispy veggies like celery and carrots to give it a nice crunch. Bulk it up with shredded lettuce or baby spinach. Add a more exciting sauce or dip for older kids. Let this serve as a jumping off point for flavor combos, then make it your own!
What are your favorite flavor combinations? Do you have a favorite tortilla brand? Do you make your own? Share with me in the comments below any combinations I need to try that have been popular at your house.

I love wraps! Too bad my son is just a little too young to enjoy them, hehe. My old go to wrap was with hummus, tabbouleh, grilled chicken and spinach. Yummy!

I love your munchkin meals. My 21 month old is sooooo super fussy and I get so many ideas to try. So far, we still aren’t successful. Hopefully someday soon I’ll have something to link to, but my guess is that pasta pictures would not be that exciting….
Thanks so much for hosting these!

I’m a big fan of wraps but for some reason haven’t really introduced them to my toddler yet. I bet he would love all of these combos!

How did I not think of this? My son has been kind of picky lately, so these might be just what I need to mix it up a bit and get him to enjoy his meals. Plus, I bet he’d love to help prep the tortillas by sprinkling cheese and other things. I never even considered doing a fruit wrap, but I love that idea!

Great idea with the wraps! Question: Did Hailey ever go through a vegetable strike? I have the hardest time getting veggies in Hunter. It frustrates me to no end!

Hm, she has definitely gone through highs and lows with certain foods, but not an entire food group. For example, she started out LOVING black beans, then went through a time she wouldn’t eat them. I phased them out a bit and brought them back occasionally a few weeks later and she eventually started eating them again. I never really acknowledged it because it usually is a phase and for our house, I don’t implement clean plate club or ‘must have one bite of this’ or any other rules. I choose what is on her plate and when it is served and she can choose what and how much of it she eats.
I wouldn’t stress too much because I’m sure it’s just a phase! Stay consistent and offer other vegetables in the meantime maybe?

Thanks, Brittany! This comes at the perfect time, as we are in a rut with Parker’s school lunches. He has the banana/PB/honey wrap combo often. But doing the refried beans one and the pizza one are awesome options! Going to give these a try for sure!

“We’ve found that extended warranties usually don’t make financial sense, and when we took a close look at the terms of those service plans we found other reasons to avoid them. This is because most of the people who will be viewing the Olympic Games would hire their cabs at the airport.

I love wraps it’s just so hard to find a good gluten free one that won’t crumble when you roll it.
