My mind is all over the place lately, but busy is good. Still, somehow January is done and here we are another month into 2012. In no time we’ll all be gushing over pumpkin muffins… OK, maybe I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but the truth is 1/12 of the year is behind us and it’s time to see if I’ve made any headway on my goals…
- Run a 10k
Nope, not there yet. I’ve been working towards it diligently, but I actually struggled a bit with my ‘long runs’ this week. More to come on that next week.
- Get back into yoga (3 times a month minimum)
I kind of consider yoga/pilates to be the same thing. I know they aren’t, but since I take them at the local Y, they feel kind of the same. So in that case, check- I hit up pilates 3 times in January! - Read 10 books (at least 1 nonfiction)
1 down, 8.5 to go (I’m already halfway into book 2)! The funny thing about reading it, once you get into it, you wonder why you ever stopped. At the risk of blowing my cool image forever (what’s that? it was blown a long time ago? oh well then…) READING IS FUN!
- Learn a new cooking technique
I’m knee-deep in learning how to use the pressure cooker and I keep getting more impressed! I’ve made Vegan Stoup, two mushroom risottos and cooked plenty of dried beans and grains.
Also, I’m filing this under cooking technique, even though it’s kind of the opposite, but I learned to dehydrate! Kale chips have never tasted so delicious. - Use 5 ingredients in the kitchen that I’ve never used before
bok choy- check!
- Reach out to and get together with a local friend at least once a month
I’ve been KILLING this goal and am quite proud of myself. I’ve met two other new moms that live in my neighborhood and have gone on walks and playdates with them. I also have been hitting up the parks with other friends that live nearby. Very proud of my January efforts. - Take swim lessons with Hailey
Yesterday’s 70 degree sunshine had me thinking about it, but not yet. I do need to start looking for a baby girl bathing suit, though. Whee!! - Go on a date night with Hubbs at least once a month
We had a big date night out in January… success! February is gearing up to be a pretty crazy month… I really hope we fit one in :/
- Continue to work on being in the moment
Feeling pretty good about this one. I’m a long ways from perfect, but I’ve really been working on putting down my phone and focusing on the moment I’m in. Whether it’s playing at the park or eating dinner with Hubbs, I want to be focusing on where I am and what I’m doing.
So what if we’re sockless with a crooked hat, we’re IN the moment

My resolution is to take better care of myself, mentally and physically. Like giving myself a lazy day when I don’t have to work my insane job, taking a rest day from exercise when I need it and pushing myself when I do choose to exercise, and stressing less. So far I’m doing okay with my resolution…a few slip ups, but progress!
Please email me at Brittany@ahealthysliceoflife.com so I can send you your spa gift card!

You’re doing great! Don’t wait on getting that swimsuit. Seriously, they sell out by April. It’s kind of insane, but to get the best selection I’ve found you have to buy baby clothes way before you need them!
Brittany says
oh, wow, good to know! Thanks!
Shari says
Ooh, how are you liking The Hunger Games? They’re not at all the type of book I normally read, but I’ve heard such great things about them that I’m tempted to give them a try!
Brittany says
When you describe the plot outloud, I agree, they sound wacky, but they are easy reads that keep you turning the page! I finished the first two and want to read the third. Very entertaining, though a bit barbaric.
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
Catching Fire!!!!! What do you think so far?
Brittany says
Finished it! They’re so entertaining. I just need to pick up the 3rd one! Have you read the series?
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
I did! I loved the first two but was disappointed by the third. My roommates however LOVED the third so maybe that was just me!

You’re doing great!
I go to a great yoga studio called Charlotte Family Yoga in North Charlotte. They have child care for almost all classes. If you’re interested, they have a lot of different yoga classes! My favorite is deep stretch… hurts so bad but feels so good 🙂
Brittany says
They have childcare?! Looking it up now- thanks! 🙂

I didn’t make new years resolutions but just last night I actually posted about February goals and they are pretty similar to yours actually. I guess since we have babies around te same age thy makes sense, being in the same stage of life. Good job accomplishing yours, hopefully I can as well!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Awesome job! I also tried to break down my goals into things I could do every day. So far so good, although I still need to work on a few things related to time management. 🙂
Kari says
Way to go! 🙂 By the way, I just love the picture of you and hubby on your date night. You look fabulous girl!

Where did you get Hailey’s adorable hat? We spent time outside yesterday and I wished I had a summery hat for Wyatt already!
Brittany says
It was a gift. I tried it on her for the first time yesterday and thought it was the cutest thing I’d ever seen! haha 🙂 I’ve some some really cute hats for both boys and girls on zulily!

A good nonfiction recommendation: The Immortal Life of Henrieta Lacks. HIGHLY recommend it (especially if you have any interest what so ever in biology).
Jen says
i never identified any 2012 goals so i can’t comment on my progress BUT i am very impressed with yours. i especially love your “being in the moment” goal. that is something that i really struggle with and constantly want to feel connected and check my phone/email/facebook/tweets. i need to learn to turn that stuff off sometimes and know that it will be there when i’m ready!
i’ve been so impressed by your 10K training. keep it up! happy friday! 🙂
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
Great job! I love that pic of the two of you. Yay for date night!
I am still reading that book, by the way. I definitely didn’t finish in time for book club. Sigh… haha, maybe next time!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
You’re doing so well on concurring your goals!
Yea, girl, keep on reading those hunger games books! 🙂

This is a great list. I love that reading 10 books is on there. My fave!! And I just recently cooked with bok choy for the first time. It’s good stuff!
Melissa @ Be Not Simply Good says
Why on earth does reading blow your cool image??
I did the same thing, though. I didn’t read anything for pleasure for several years, and since I have started again, I do wonder why I ever stopped. I think for me, I just had so much reading to do for school (in high school and college) that I got out of the habit of reading for fun. Then it took several years for me to realize that I could read for pleasure again.
