Christmas is next week, which means we are only one week away from the blog world exploding with posts about New Year’s resolutions. Some people love them, some people hate them. I tend to think they are pretty fun. I like to have a list of goals to reach for in a new year and I enjoy hearing what others hope to accomplish.
Before talking about what I’ll be reaching for in 2013, I’d like to review how I did this year. I pulled up my New Year’s resolution post from last December and couldn’t help but awwww over how tiny 3 month old Hailey was.
Let’s see how I did…
- Run a 10k – I did it! I ran the Davidson Run for the Green 10k and finished better than I expected.
- Get back into yoga (3 times a month minimum) – I was really into yoga for a while, meaning 1x a week. I love it; I really do. I even asked all my yoga questions and had them answered by Jen. I hate that I fell off the bandwagon. The trouble is that there isn’t a studio near me, especially one that offers day care. So what is a mom wannabe yogi to do? A video? Online? Still thinking this one over.
- Read 10 books (at least 1 nonfiction) – 10 books. Less than 1 a month. So doable, right? WRONG. I read Catching Fire, Mockingjay, Baby Led Weaning, The Fountainhead, Steve Jobs biography and about 1/4th of Atlas Shrugged. Definitely want to do better n this category.
- Learn a new cooking technique – Check! I used a dehydrator and a pressure cooker for the both time.
- Use 5 ingredients in the kitchen that I’ve never used before – I actually kept a list on my phone so I could keep track. New foods tried in 2012- bok choy, tempeh, figs, golden beets and miracle noodles!
- Reach out to and get together with a local friend at least once a month – Done and done and done. We get together with friends multiple times a week. Blew this one OUT of the water.
- Take swim lessons with Hailey – I’m sad that I failed with this one, though we did frequent the pool during the summer. This year I’ll definitely making good on it.
- Go on a date night with Hubbs at least once a month – Hm, I’m not quite sure we hit the once a month mark, though I don’t feel we’ve been deprived of date nights. We tend to save getting a sitter for really fun events rather than just grabbing dinner.
- Continue to work on being in the moment – I feel good about this one, though it’s becoming increasingly difficult to get everything done in a day that I need to get done now that Hailey is a toddler. We might make a few adjustments in the upcoming year so I can get things done and stay focused just on Hailey when it’s time to play.
Have you reviewed your 2012 goals?
What was your biggest accomplishment?

Congrats on a great year! I think my greatest personal accomplishment for the year was having my son in March! Professionally it was a decent year, and I’m starting to find my place at the job I started last December.
What were your thoughts on The Fountainhead? I like that novel, it is easier to digest than Atlas Shrugged. I don’t 100% agree with the philosophy but it has some interesting ideas.

I LOVED The Fountainhead. I think it was one of the best books I’ve ever read. I’m don’t mean to sound like I’m chugging the kool aid, but it made me think a lot and reflect on my own life, which I love.
And congrats on your baby boy- definitely one of the best accomplishment anyone could have! 🙂

I think it’s definitely one of those books that people either Love or Hate. My husband is really into the philosophy of Ayn Rand and so when we started dating I read a lot of her novels and even some non-fiction. We even used one of her quotes at our wedding.

You HAVE to finish Atlas Shrugged in 2012. While The Fountainhead in my most favorite book, Atlas is the mother of all books. Life changing, for sure. Great goals!

I know! David is close to the end of it, so I know I just need to tackle it. Maybe it will be my book goal for 2013!

I love looking back on the year like this! I just did a running recap, but need to do a general 2012 recap as well.
I love the goal of 5 new foods– I might have to use that one this year. And I hear you on the toddler stage being so much harder to be present AND get stuff done… we found a mother’s day out program two mornings a week, which she LOVES and gives me a couple of hours. WIn win. 🙂
Brittany says
I’m looking at similar programs! How have you both adjusted to it?
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
It was actually a really easy adjustment. And since Hailey is already used to day care at the gym, I bet she’ll have no problem!

Getting together with friends more has been one of my goals and I am getting so much better at it! It helps that Sam is a bit more flexible these days and is super interested in other kiddos. I tried to read Ayn Rand before…did not go well. Good luck to you!

Great job!! I need to look back on what I wrote and see how I did!

Congrats on reaching so many of your goals! For the yoga one, I would suggest doing online videos. doyogawithme.com has good FREE videos. Other sites that have videos for all levels are yogaglo.com and yogisanonymous.com (you have to pay a small monthly fee for both, however they do offer a free trial period). Hopefully that will help! >^.^<
Brittany says
Thank you for those suggestions! I really want to check them out and maybe commit to a month or so of doing them in the new year. Thanks 🙂

Great job on everything you did accomplish sweetie xoxo
