The black eyed peas are soaked and ready, the collards are washed and torn (Ok, I bought them that way) and 2013 is here! I rang it in with family, fireside, while playing bridge. A far cry from my NYE plans of years past, but a wonderful evening nonetheless.
I’m sad to see all our family take off today, but I am ready to pack up Christmas and start eating like a sane person again.
I also have a list of of goals for 2013! No eye rolls, please, I’ve already posted my 2012 goal wrap up so all the resolution posts will be over soon. But first…
1. Run a race. Vague, right? 5k, 10k, half marathon (HA)- I haven’t quite decided yet, but I know I want to run one.
2. Cook with 5 new foods. This a repeat of last year, but I really enjoyed finding and experimenting with new ingredients.
3. Read 6 books. 2 for fun, 2 health related and 2 for personal growth. I realize this may not sound like much, but after missing my 10 book goal of 2012, I need to make this a SMART goal.
4. Yoga. Learn it, do it. My true goal is to be able to be on vacation and bust out at least 30 minutes of a yoga routine without any help or direction. I want to be able to walk down to the beach and yoga. I’m hoping my 15 days of yoga will help.
5. Teach Hailey to swim. We are water people and it’s important to me that Hailey learns safety around water as soon as possible. Will she be swimming laps before her 2nd birthday? Doubtful , but the sooner the better when getting comfortable with water.
6. Grow something. Last year David made me a beautiful garden which I filled with a plethora of plants. My yield ended up being abysmal, so this year I want to pick ONE plant and do it well. I’m thinking tomatoes.
7. Learn to can foods. With any luck, I’ll figure out how to grow tomatoes well and can some for the cold months! Orrrrr I can always buy a ton at the farmers market and do the same.
8. Organize the blog into categories. I love blogging but hate the technical side because, let’s be honest, I don’t understand it. I want this blog to be easier to search and navigate. Bear with me.
9. Say no to things I don’t want to do. Being a recovering people pleaser, I say yes to a lot of things I really don’t want to do. I know in life we all sometimes do things that we don’t want to do, but I need to be more selective. I sometimes find my plate too full, which in turn makes me an unpleasant-to-be-around stress ball. I have no one to blame but myself! I’m going to work on this in 2013.
Ok, done! I’m looking forward to a lot of focus on healthy food, exercise and baby (or toddler) talk around these parts in 2013. Reminder that MUNCHKIN MEALS continues this Thursday!
What is one of your goals or resolutions?
Lee says
I would like to do more yoga in 2013 too. And one of my other goals is to dress better. I feel like I always look sloppy or frumpy.
Brittany says
I’m actually trying to work on this, too! I keep trying to remind myself that I’m an adult and it wouldn’t hurt to dress like one every now and then 🙂
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
My goals: continue to work to be a good wife to Brandon, try to be the best mommy I can be when my little girl comes, and grow my relationship with the Lord. 🙂
Erica says
I love all of your goals! Especially that they are realistic and achievable – I always make my resolutions way to big and never reach them. My one resolution for 2013 is to travel more and enjoy life!
Chantal says
I need to organize my blog a little bit too!
Shari says
Love your goals! I think #9 is one we could all benefit from … thanks for motivating me to add it to my list, too. My #1 goal for 2013 – sign with a lit agent! 🙂
Brittany says
Signing with a lit agent will make it such an awesome year for you!! Good luck- you can do it!
Danica @ It's Progression says
I love how well-rounded your goals are! I’m still finalizing my goals (I know it’s the 1st, but I don’t want to throw out anything and not have thought them through : ) but one of mine is going to be to try at least 5 new-to-me fruits or vegetables! I’m excited to find something new and healthy!

Happy New Year!
I can relate with many of these goals. Some of mine – Run a 5k race. I do lots of 5k, 8k and 10k walks (about 30 per year) but it would be good to run and learn to swim strokes
Brittany says
I know nothing about swim strokes either and would really benefit from learning how to swim for real. Great goals!
Lauren B. says
I want to run a 5K, read a daily devotional to Jackson (it’s never to early to start!), and connect with a friend at least once a week. Happy New Year!
Elizabeth says
Do you have a yummy black eyed pea recipe?? Happy New Year!
One of my goals is to live more balanced – in eating, work, working out( this need to be more) i want to get healthy this year!
Brittany says
I don’t really, but my made up recipe this year turned out pretty decent. I soaked black eyed peas over night, then I sauteed a little sausage in a pot with garlic and onion, added black eyed peas and vegetable broth and simmered until soft. Then added diced tomatoes. Surprisingly pretty good! 🙂
Elle says
I love your goals! I used to teach swimming lessons and it is so important that they learn at a young age. It makes it easier to not be so afraid of the water.
One of my goals is to do things more for me and not so much for other people 🙂
Happy New Year!
Paige @ Your Trainer Paige says
Those sound like great goals, Brittany! One of my current goals is to keep up with my yoga practice, too. I think I’ll be going to my first class in Colorado tomorrow!
Brittany says
I hope you find a great studio! I’m so excited to read all about your adventures in CO!
Liz @ iheartvegetables says
Those are awesome goals, Brittany!! 🙂
Maria says
I love the idea of saying no. I never really think about whether I really want to do something or not and just automatically say yes. Sometimes this works well and activities exceed my expectations, but sometimes it backfires and I do have too much to handle. I think finding a good balance of yes’s and no’s is the way to go for me 🙂
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
Love these goals! Happy new year!
Jessie says
Love all of your goals Brittany, especially teaching Hailey to swim! You’ll have such a good time w/ that =)
Erin says
I’m also a recovering people pleaser, so I get where you’re coming from. 😉 I don’t make resolutions, but I do need to drink more water. I’ve been horrible about that lately!
Katy @ MonsterProof says
Sounds similar! Good luck! I have a 5 miler on the books for April, have a reading goal, and my 19 m/o is signed up to swim 2 days a week (with me during no-lifejacket- time one day, and a class the other). I want to steal more of your ideas! (mostly gardening and canning!)
