What I Ate Wednesday posts are kind of weird, aren’t they? I mean, doesn’t it seem a little obsessive and silly to snap pictures of all your food?
Apple Cider Vinegar & Honey. Half a Banana.
When I try to explain it to people outside the blogging world I always get odd looks when I say that I show people what I eat. They’re first question is… who cares what you eat?
2 Eggs Fried in Kerrygold, salsa, Strawberries & Bananas.
But then again, why do we always ask the other people at our table what they are ordering when we go out to eat? I know I do that.
I don’t think it’s so crazy to be curious as to what and how other people eat. Nosy, maybe, but not odd. Seeing what someone eats gives you a peak into their world.
Dehydrated Strawberries and Raw Almonds.
And I love peaking into the lives of other people. Why do you think I like reading blogs so much?
Lettuce from the Garden, spinach, Radicchio, Blueberries, La Bonne Vie Honey Goat Cheese, baked Chicken, Avocado and Balsamic.
I’ve found new food tricks I never would have known about through blogging, like using soaked and blended cashews to create the crunchy deliciousness of kale chips!
Edamame. Not kale chips.
Swimming. Can’t get enough of her lately. I should do a toddlerhood update soon, huh?
I also use WIAW posts as a reference when meal planning. I love seeing what ate during the same season the previous year. It gives me ideas and keeps our menu interesting.
Plus, I love sharing new products with you. Like quinoa pasta. It was recommended to me by a friend, so we had to try it. The ingredient list is pretty- only two ingredients; organic corn and organic quinoa. Be warned, the corn from the pasta will release while cooking, turning the boiling water yellow. It’s normal.
The cooking is a little tricky though. You want it al dente, but not underdone. Also, stir it every so often while it cooks to prevent the noodles from sticking together.
Mussels Marinara over Quinoa Pasta with Fresh Basil. Red Wine on the side.
The verdict? I was a big fan! David said he would prefer it to whole wheat. I’ll be buying it again.
What I ate Wednesday posts. Love ‘em or leave ‘em?
Why?
Chrissy says
Hey girl!
What is your trick to kale chips? Ryan and I try to make them and they never turn out crispy. We have only had them turn out pretty good one time! Help! And for the record, I like to see what you eat. It inspires me and gives me ideas =)
Brittany Dixon says
Honestly, my trick is the dehydrator. I could never get them to come out right in the oven, but the dehydrator makes them nice and crispy! My favorite recipe is from Gina – http://fitnessista.com/2011/11/its-a-mystery/
Alex says
Love it! Im nosy but i also love inspiration and motivation to eat healthy.
Gcroft says
Love your WIAW posts. I too need food inspirations, especially healthier recipes.
Erin @ Sugar Magnolia says
I like it once a week and think it is cool to see what everyone else is eating, but I don’t want to know everyday, y’know? I think some people go a little over board.
Sarah says
I agree with Erin – I like them occasionally, especially like this one where you share your experience with something new or unusual, like the quinoa pasta – but too often or just a million pictures of food gets to be a little much.
Brittany Dixon says
This is all such great feedback! Considering how I want to move forward with them in the future…
Kaitlyn @Keeping up with Kaitlyn says
I love your WIAW posts! I think its interesting to see what others eat and it gives me ideas on why to eat/make for my own meals!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Haha, I love see what people eat, especially when their breakfasts look as good as yours does!! I totally agree that it is fun to see what other people are eating because it often provides me with ideas and inspiration for my own meals.
Karen says
I love them and do them as well. I think it’s fun to see what other bloggers are eating as I get a lot of my meal ideas from all of you.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
So glad you are in the club of ‘who has time to peel ’em?’ carrots. 🙂
I was JUST thinking about this topic this morning. I do love seeing what other people eat, mostly for recipe ideas, food combinations, or just to know I’m not alone in some weird quirky habit (like the carrot thing). New products, new methods, and everything else you mentioned.
I think I’m mostly wondering if people really care what I eat. I also think the link-up has gotten so big it’s hard to really “find new blogs” that way. I don’t know what I use it for that anymore.
Sometimes I do compare, and wonder things like, “How does he/she eat so LITTLE?” But for the most part it is just a boon for creativity!
Brittany Dixon says
Oh yeah, who has time?! I peel them for H (usually…), but just plow through them peeled and all myself 🙂
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers says
I love ’em. I find them inspirational. Most of the meals are healthy, so that is inspiring right there. But also – I get ideas on what to make myself. I may not recreate meals exactly, but I’ll be like, “ooooo, I haven’t had mussels in forever!” and will whip something up.
Tanya @ Vegan Faith says
I just don’t think mussels would be complete without the red wine! Such a fancy dinner for a week night! You guys are my idols, I love making ordinary extraordinary!
Brittany Dixon says
It may look fancy, but mussels are ridiculously cheap and easy. Shhh… don’t tell my secret 😉
Lindsey says
Leave em. I don’t mind reading other people’s, but for me to do seems tedious. I am not sure I could take photos of all my meals if I tried! I think the important thing for the WIAW posts is that bloggers make the statement that this was probably not everything that went into their mouth that day & most do that.
Beth Sheridan says
I have never done a WIAW post (maybe I should!) but I really enjoy reading everyone else’s! And yes, toddlerhood update please!!
Brittany Dixon says
I realize I haven’t updated on Hailey in SO long… maybe I’ll have to do one soon. She’s ridiculously fun right now! Anything is particular I should update on? I feel a little obnoxious saying – she’s cute when she swims, she’s cute when she sleeps… blah blah 😉
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles says
I like them! It is weird to people outside of the blogging community, but then again, isn’t blogging in general usually weird to those outside the blogging community? I think it’s just a different way to get to know someone, and I love getting ideas for meals from others’ posts.
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, yes! Trying to talk about blogging always gets me weird looks so I usually don’t mention it at all.
Heidi Nicole says
Leave them!
One the plus side, its the one day that I can quickly clean out my reader – just “mark as read” anything that has WIAW in the title. Kind of harsh, but I’m have no interest in food blogging so I just skip them all.
{Yea, I realize I read this WIAW post, but it was because of the “Love ’em or Leave ’em” part! Apparently I like to share opinions…}
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, I love opinions so share away! It’s funny because sometimes I breeze by them, too. I read them if the person has pretty pictures, uses different ingredients or usually has tasty looking meals I can get ideas from. A picture of oatmeal gets old after the 8466595985795 time seeing it. But I guess you could say the same for me eggs 😉
Danica @ It's Progression says
I don’t know why exactly either but I love seeing what other people eat! It gives me ideas for healthy meals or snacks that I can make for myself and my family, and well, I just love food : )
Oh, and I definitely ask people at my table what they’re ordering at restaurants too. No one ever seems to be bothered by that, I’m pretty sure it’s a common thing to do!
Ashlee@HisnHers says
I’ve had some Quinoa pasta sitting in my pantry for months now that I need to use up! If you all loved it maybe I should try it out sooner rather than later.
And even before I started blogging I never found it weird that other people were obsessed with their food as much as me…but then agai that’s because I’m one of the weird ones! haha
Parita says
I honestly like your WIAW more than others. I think it’s because you share little bits of your everyday life with us along with all of the delicious food.
And thanks for the pasta review. My husband is not a fan of whole wheat pasta, so maybe he’ll enjoy this a little more!
Verna says
I love them! Lots of great ideas! Thanks!
Ana says
I like the wiaw too! Once a week is fun!
And I have to say that Haley is so precious 🙂 She is the happiest and sweetest little girl ever, I love seeing her pictures on your blog. Like the one with the strawberry yesterday, she is so happy and seems like a fun little girl!
My son just turned 11 and I totally miss those days, this is an awesome age, so enjoy her to the fullest just like you always did!
The quinoa pasta sound so good, I will buy some to try! (see how wiaw posts really are great to find new things and foodie ideas!)
Ana
Maria says
Eh, take em or leave em. Before Instagram, I thought WIAW posts were really interesting, but if you (not necessarily YOU, but bloggers in general) Instagram their food all day and also do a WIAW post, it’s just so redundant. I do; however, enjoy your posts because you always seem to have a spin to them or they are more like a day-in-the-life post, which I will shamelessly admit to really enjoying.
Hailey update: yes please.
Jen says
I care about what you eat! But I actually care more about Hailey’s life-jacket. It looks a bit less bulkier than Wyatt’s and since he hates it so much, we’re in the market for a new one. I don’t expect him to *like* any of them, but we definitely need a new one!
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
They do feel a little weird, but based on page views and all that, I think my readers really like them! I know I love reading yours!
Amy @ {Life to the Full} says
Love ’em! I love checking out other people’s food… and I just love food. It’s a great way to find new meal planning ideas.
Jayme says
Please don’t stop WIAWs! They are my favorite posts! 🙂
As a relatively new mom (my baby is 5 months), I would also love a Haley update. I’ve enjoyed reading about your experiences with motherhood so I know what I have to look forward to.
christina says
I like YOUR WIAW posts bc you mix it up and introduce me to new products. You have a great variety of foods on your posts and they inspire me. MUAH!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
I haven’t done a WIAW post in a while, but I like them. I like getting ideas from other people … both recipes and products! 🙂
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
I’ve never really been into the WIAW’s, but I still always read your posts. lol.
I’m cooking w/ brown rice spaghetti tonight. I’m interested in seeing how it turns out! I couldn’t find the quinoa noodles at Whole Foods on Monday…
Jodi says
If it makes you feel better, I had never heard of blogging until I bumped into you at teeter… (And come to think of it, you were hesitant to tell me about your blog!! ) And now I enjoy reading yours and other with similar themes… Ie healthy living, babies/toddlers, exercising, etc… If I had more time, I would probably enjoy blogging too! Granted, I would probably drone on and on about my life and never finding a work/life balance, so maybe I’d be a bad blogger… 😉 keep doing what you do, you’re doing a great job!
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
I LOVE eggs fried in kerrygold! Best butter ever.
I think the WIAW is a cool idea but I think too many bloggers do it just to fit in with everyone else. Annoys me.
Toni says
I love them! Great for inspiration. Keep them coming!
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
I love it! I love seeing what other people eat to get ideas and as you said it is a great point of reference to remember meals you cooked that were really good or bad 🙂
Allie says
The quinoa pasta is SO intriguing!! I’ll have to definitely check that out. I find that prepping quinoa is soo long that I never want to do it, but if I can get my quinoa via the pasta form, I’m all for that!
Meghan@Clean Eats Fast Feets says
I really like the WIAW posts, but ‘m nosy and Iike to see what other people eat along with what is in their grocery carts. I’m always up in someone’s business at the checkout counter, scoping it out.
I also am thrilled to see someone eating pasta (even if it’s quinoa) as opposed to spagehtti squash pasta (not that there’s anything wrong with that) and beautiful fried eggs. Your eats look delicious and even though I just ate lunch, they are making me hungry.
