I’m back in NC! As wonderful as it was to see friends and family, it feels good to be back home and reunited with Hubbs. I guess we don’t usually spend many days apart, and what can I say, I missed him <3
OK, enough cheese for the morning, let’s take a look at yesterday’s eats… and why some of it almost didn’t stay down.
Breakfast
Nope, it’s not out of order. I’ve told you I don’t have to eat breakfast for breakfast, and this salad was in mom’s fridge and calling my name. Spinach, peppers, olives, carrots, feta… drizzled with Catalina. It has a boiled egg on top- so, it’s kind of like a funky omelet? 😉
Plus a slice of toasted pumpkin bread- mmm!
Snack
After our walk and before hitting the road, I grabbed this green guy. Crunch!
Lunch
Halfway home it was time for lunch for both Hailey and me. She didn’t have much of a choice, but I opted for one of my favorite on-the-road meals. A grilled chicken house Zalad from Zaxbys, no cheese, drizzled with ranch and tongue torch.
But they didn’t get my order right because I distinctly remember NOT asking for this guy:
I was about half way through the salad when I saw this fly bug staring back at me and my stomach seriously clenched up and I thought it was all going to come back up for a minute. I snapped photo evidence while trying not to gag, then tossed it.
GAG.
Even though I ate a little less than 1/2 my salad, somehow my appetite had disappeared.
Snack
I snacked on a few of these when I got home, but we didn’t have much food in the house. I thought about going to the grocery, but tiredness and wanting to catch up with Hubbs won out, so we opted for our favorite:
Dinner
We love this place. They love us. Seriously, they know us. That’s how often we go here. Should I be embarrassed?
We ordered the usual: Chicken Fajitas for one to split. It’s always more than enough food!
It was delicious, but as we drove home I thought… who eats Mexican and beer before doing a weigh in and measurements for their 2 month post baby body check in? Oh, I do 😛
Have you ever found something you shouldn’t have in your food?
What was it?
Where was it from?
I won’t be eating Zaxby’s again for a long time!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I found a green inch worm in my salad in high school. I remember bringing it back up to the lunch line, showing them and they just totally dismissed it and said it happens! I was pissed and disgusted! At least it wasn’t a major franchise though. That’s gross!
blackhuff says
Oooo, that beer looks awesomely good in that frozen glass. Geez!
Nice eats. Can agree that I too would sent back that order with a little guy like that – don’t like sharing 😉
Marijke says
Eww that would have freaked me out!
A fly is bad, but this is even worse: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2062082/Tescos-salad-dead-bird-inside-Vegetarian-seconds-away-eating-it.html
Lee says
OMG, bleh. Did you tell the people that worked there about it or were you eating in the car?
I’ve found hairs in my food before, but that’s it. Remember like ten years ago when that person found a deep fried chicken head from Popeye’s? I just remembered that!
Brittany says
I was eating in the car… if I didn’t have Hailey with me, I probably would have gone back!
ps- ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww chicken head?!?!
Lindsay @ The Lean Green Bean says
ugh…bugs in food are the worst!!
Jen says
SO gross! I gagged when you mentioned that on twitter yesterday. Eww eww eww. At least you made up for it with some other fabulous eats throughout the day!
Chelcie @ Chelcie's Food Files says
that is SO gross that there was a bug in your salad! I would have freaked out! At least you got to make up for it by having a yummy dinner!

Seriously, I have had two bad experiences with Chick fil a. Once when I was 16 and ordered a chick fil a spicy wrap I found a small metal bar inside. Did not eat there for a few years after. And then just this Monday I went there and ordered some nuggets- one of them wasn’t cooked all the way! Now my relationship with Chick fil a has been destroyed at the moment and I hope one day I can enjoy it again. Chick fil a and zaxbys are the only fast food I will go too and I don’t even go that often!!
Brittany says
oh, so sad! I was thinking I should have gone to chick-fil-a because they never have gross problems. Guess I was wrong!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
GAG! I HATE when that happens. Once that happens, I usually can’t eat there anymore. lol.
Once at my favorite burger place in town, there was a fly in my mom’s water. It wasn’t even in mine and now I don’t want to go back! Plus, the server was like ” Well, what do you want me to do?”.
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
That salad looked good. Emphasis on the “ed” in “looked.” Bummer!
I think the Mexican made up for it. I love Mexican food but usually forget about going out for it. Must fix that!
Brooklyn @ Veggie Table says
I just gagged looking at that fly lettuce – yuck! I’ll definitely be checking my salads with a microscope from now on, ha! On the other hand, the Mexican food and beer look delicious!!!!!! And p.s. – I had leftover couscous and spinach for breakfast this morning….I’ve never been a big breakfast food fan
Megan says
Ewww! I saw your twitter yesterday, and that’s so nasty! I don’t think I’ve ever found anything like that, but DH found a fly in his hot chocolate from McDonalds. The worst part was he drank it, and felt something in his mouth and tried to break it up, thinking it was a piece of chocolate! Second worse was that his brother made him the hot chocolate!
Lindsay @ Schnoodle Soup says
I bought broccoli at the grocery store two weeks in a row and it had bugs in it. Organic and everything! Not that that indicates grown in an area not invaded by bugs, but still. Also, Negra Modelo = <3
Brittany says
oh yes, a delicious beer!
Lauren @hugskissesndishes says
ewwww! A lot of times i’ll find a hair and freak out, but then I think about it and it is probably my own. Still, I definitely treasure eating at home!
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
I found the tip of a latex glove in my salad at TGI Friday’s. I haven’t eaten there since.
tina says
Oh ick!! I would have died sewing that. Actually to this day I can’t sat mall food.court Chinese food bec of a similar scenario years ago. Not a and thing sunscreen I don’t really care for it anyways. But boo on a gave being ruined!!!
KaraHadley says
So…um…I used to work at Zaxby’s and you would seriously vomit if I told you some of the things that ended up in food. But really, a fly isn’t so bad compared to some of the stuff that ended up on toast.
I’ll spare you the details. But I don’t eat Zaxby’s anymore (which is too bad because their fries are killer).
Brittany says
oh my gosh, are you serious?? Too bad… I love(d) Zaxbys. I used to work at baskin Robbins, though, and feel the same way.
Heather @ girlyeverafter says
That is the worst when you find something towards the END of the meal. I found a hair in my pizza the one time I went to Village Inn pizza. I didn’t want to go in the first place so I should have listened to my intuition.
Sarah says
I guess I’ve had little crawlies in my farmer’s market, CSA or home-grown greens before that didn’t bother me (hello, it’s direct from the garden!)… but never a FLY. That is truly disgusting.
Once in college I received a Belgian waffle complete with strawberries, whipped cream and a giant black hair, direct from our waitress’ head, strewn across the top. I sent it back. Put your hair up girl!
Lauren says
Blech. I can’t look! Nor can I read any comments 😛 My friend once texted me saying the she was never going to this bagel shop we used to *love* because she picked up a bag of bagels and they *all* had fuzz baked into them. Gagggg.
Sarah says
I have salads for breakfast all the time! I think its perfectly fine =) I cant recall finding anything weird in my food. Ive gotten the occasional cheese pieces in my salads, i think i found an eyelash once.. ick. But thats it.
CrazyCookingCouple says
Just found your blog and must say that we LOVE it! It is too fun!! Love this WIAW posting but boo for uninvited guest (like that buggie) at meals!
Brittany says
Oh, thank you so much!! Yes, I like to get what I ordered, no extra protein thrown in 😉 EW!
Jen@FoodFamilyFitness says
OMG I would have thrown up for sure!!! Too bad, that salad looked like it could have been so good!
We used to go to a mexican restaurant where everyone knew us, and then they closed, it was a sad day 🙁 Great idea on splitting the fajitas, I’ll have to try that with the husband of mine next time we go out!
PressureCookerDiaries says
We’re regulars at a local Mexican place too (Monte Alban) and get pretty much the exact same thing, Chicken Fajitas for 1 that we split. Most times we ask them to add some Chorizo sausage in the mix too – which makes it even more yummy.
I got a grasshopper in a salad once, it was disgusting.
Roz says
Oh gross!!! I actually ATE a bug that was in a raspberry (I’d picked it myself from a local farm). I’d washed them, but I guess one got into one of the berries and didn’t get washed away. I had it with some yogurt, and OMG, gross!!!!!! (Took a couple of years before I could eat raspberries and yogurt though…) Have a great, bug free day!
Cate @ CKinCA says
That’s disgusting. Good thing you caught it!
One time, I found a cigarette butt in my salad. It was at a restaurant called Waves in Michigan. I don’t know if it’s still around, but it was one of those places everyone knew and loved. I refused to go after that experience, and people just didn’t understand why I wouldn’t try it again.
And there is NO shame in your fav restaurant knowing who you guys are… My friends in Chicago get a “friends and family” discount at one place because they go so often! You should propose that!
Sara @ Nourish and Flourish says
I’m an occasional salad breakfast-eater too. Food rules are so silly! If you want soup for breakfast, by all means eat soup! Heck, sometimes I go for a bowl of ice cream as well. 🙂
Ick ick ick about the bug! What a bummer–especially since Zaxby’s was one of your favorite places. Maybe you can try re-creating the salad at home?
The fajitas are making me hungry! I need those back in my life…it’s been too long!
Aunt Lynn says
I remember once your mom found worms in her Reeses Peanut Butter cup…she did not eat those for a long time…maybe still doesn’t. It did not stop me!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
I love hummus and I love Mexican food. Yikes, a bug in your salad. That’s creepy!
Colleen says
I found a spider in my Bird’s Eye steamable peas about a year and a half ago. I was half way through eating them – blech! I haven’t had peas since. 🙂
Ellen says
I found a quarter in my sandwich the other day, pretty gross ESP since the quarter dated back to 1960, who knows where it’s been.
dani says
ooh that’s rough, i know how you feel. i went to a little bistro in my hometown and ordered a really yummy sandwich that i’d had many times before. after taking a bite, i looked down and found HALF of a fly. meaning that the other half of that critter was already chewed up and in my tummy. ew ew ew i still get super queasy thinking about that one…
Jen says
oh brittany! that is so gross. i am sorry that happened to you. it would have made my stomach turn too. i’m not sure that i’ve found anything that bad in my food before…just the occasional hair. which is also icky!
Julia says
I went to Hong Kong in 1989 and while out for a meal with my Mom found a Cockroach in my rice…a particularly unpleasant experience let me tell you!
