It’s here!!!
For those good Georgia fans out there who automatically assumed I was talking about the Georgia/Florida game this weekend… you’re half right 😉
…but no, I won’t be attending the largest cocktail party in the world, like I did for many years…
…instead, I’ll be RUNNING my first 5K!!!!!!!!!!!
and y’all…
I’m nervous.
Yesterday I decided to give 3.2 miles a whirl. Well… Around 2.7-2.8 miles I felt whipped…
and I had to stop.
This FREAKED me out.
Suddenly thoughts of ‘omigaw, what if I can’t finish’ came rushing through my mind.
My only saving grace might be that I knew conditions weren’t right for me yesterday. Usually I eat, let it sit for an hour, then run. However, my run was delayed yesterday with the unexpected arrival of the fireplace man…
side note: we now have a wood burning fireplace… & I <3 it!
However, this delayed me for another 1.5 hours, and I was feeling slightly hungry when I left the house.
Also, it was a lot warmer outside than usual yesterday. Probably close to 80, which I haven’t been used to.
I’m hoping the combo of not being ‘properly fueled’ and the ‘heat’ were my reasons for not faring so well.
That being said, I decided to go ahead and develop my game plan for Saturday. Since we’re spending tonight with our good friends that live in Charlotte and are also running the race , I won’t be at home to prepare. So I’m prepping now. Here’s my plan:
-
Get enough sleep – although I haven’t seen these friends in a while, we can stay up late Saturday night and catch up. Friday, I’ll be in bed by 11.
-
Eat breakfast – is it crazy that I’m bringing my own breakfast? PB&J. I don’t want to risk not having something to eat that I know sits well on my stomach.
-
Drink plenty of water before
-
Warm up – I never start my runs off cold. I usually walk for a few minutes to get the blood flowing. I plan on doing the same on Saturday
Ok, I realize it’s a 5k, not a marathon, but it’s a big race for me, and I want to do well! (Do well in my mind = cross the finish line running ;)).
Anything I’m missing? Tips? Tricks? Ideas?
Ahhh… so exciting 😀
Oh yeah, and GO DAWGS!!! Beat those gators!

aww honey you will be FINE!! you have a perfect plan set up – just relax! it’s not as bad once you get out there. the energy from the other runners will inspire you, i promise!! you just do it!!! and yeah my #1 tip is don’t eat too much fiber beforehand. been there, done that. ouch.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
I have never run a 5K (just can’t help it…I’m not a runner)…but I can say GOOD LUCK!
Chicago Cuisine Critique says
Don’t sweat the 5K you seriously will be fine. I joined one of these with my group from work and I had not run over a mile in a month..and I finished! There is something about everyone running together in a group that will keep you going. I know it may sound crazy, but you will be able to do it! 🙂
Joslyn @ missfitbliss says
You’re going to have so much fun! Just enjoy the ride:)
Katie @ Healthy Heddleston says
Good luck Brittany, I’m sure you will be great!! Just relax and have fun! I know you are nervous but everything will be great!!
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
You’ll do great! You’ll get all hyped up on the energy of the event and do just fine!
Tell yourself that its OK to walk (and it really is – plenty of people walked during my first 5K and still did well!). Also, do lots of stretching between now and then – it will work wonders! Good luck!

You can’t miss from having a great time. Prep, cooler weather, adrenaline, group atmosphere, tenacious spirit. You will enjoy this immensely. Proud of you! I look forward to hearing all about it.

It’s not crazy you’re bringing your own breakfast- makes sense! Good luck!

ENJOY!! HAVE FUN!!!!!!
Linzi @ Destination 26.2 says
You are going to do great! I always get nerves before a race – but once you get there it will be amazing. Enjoy your first race – because I’m pretty sure you will want to do many many more afterwards! My first 5k is what made me want to keep running races. GOOD LUCK!! 🙂
Lisa @ I'm an Okie says
you got this!!
Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks says
I wouldn’t get too worried about things. Race day adrenaline is an amazing thing!
Sounds like you have a great race day plan….good luck! You’re gonna rock it, I know it!
Corey @ The Runner's Cookie says
Those are all great ideas! Sleep & proper fuel are the most important — and you’re NOT silly to bring your own breakfast! Better safe than sorry 🙂
And I wouldn’t worry about not being prepared – when you’re racing, a ton of adrenaline will kick in and you’ll do great! Good luck!!
Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous. says
Good luck! I’m just started to try out running so I’d be nervous about a 5k too!
Jane Preston says
YOU CAN DO IT! Knowing you, you will probably come in first!!

today’s
A: wish we were at Ga/Fla dressed up for Halloween entertaining ourselves at foam parties..but we are grown and now I guess we wouldn’t be doing those sorts of things..but we should make a reunion out of it sometime in the near future
B: your race day is here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you’re going to do amazing and I can’t wait to see how accomplished you feel! You have worked so hard and it’s all going to be worth it tomorrow! love you!
Shawnee says
You’ll do awesome! I struggled with a few practice runs before finally doing my 5k. It will work out.
Tina says
Good luck on the 5K!!!! You’ll do awesome though I know it.
And cannot wait for tomorrow’s game. I really, really hope we win. 😀
Sarah for Real says
Pee! Use the porta potty or whatever when you get there. I made that mistake once and I’ll never do it again.
PS… with the excitement of the race you’ll make it! No worries, just pace yourself from the start.
Melissa says
I think you will complete it without any problems. I’m sure once you are out there you will get some extra adrenaline pumping seeing all of the other people who are doing it. That will make you want to push on and go the distance! 😉 And your distance wasn’t all that far off from a 5K; I think the lack of food in your system definitely played a part.
Allie @ Cook Read Run says
I just ran my first 5k and I ran it so much faster than I do alone! I think the crowd cheering for you and the people running with you make you quicker and stronger. I didn’t know if I was going to finish either, but it ended up being wonderful!!
Good luck! I am cheering for you!!
Allie
Kate @ alittlelikeheaven says
Good luck! I hope you do awesome on your race!
The game though is another story… I am also missing out on Fl/GA this year, however, i am a hardcore gator 😉
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
I can’t wait to hear about your race Brittany!!!
