When Hailey was a baby, she’d bounce in her exersaucer while I chopped and sautéed. When she started sitting up and crawling, I’d let her destroy my Tupperware cabinet to entertain herself while I sliced and diced. Now that Hailey is a vivacious toddler, distracting her is impossible. She wants to be part of the action and I’m embracing it. No, more than that. I’m loving it.
Having a sidekick in the kitchen makes experimenting so much more fun.
She handles all the quality control.
I find myself creating ideas that center around her favorite flavors, like cherries.
I love watching her reactions as she learns (from a safe distance) how kitchen appliances work and sound.
I like thinking of fun twists to add extra nutrition or a hidden surprise.
And making sure presentation and function are suitable for her cute little hands.
The only downside of my sous chef being so young is an early bedtime.
Which means taste-testing often has to wait until the next day.
But lucky for her, I took one for the team. I enthusiastically approve.
Discovering the frozen berries as I licked my way through this treat made me giddy in anticipation to present these to Hailey as a post-nap snack. She’s going to flip!
