I wanted to write this review on the seventh day I owned this face mask, but was afraid I’d oversell my love for it, so I waited. Now, roughly six weeks into using it regularly, I couldn’t wait anymore. And since I am getting my first IPL laser treatment on my face this week, I wanted to be sure before there was another contributing factor at play. I can share more about my IPL experience in another post, but this one is all about the HighDOSE Red Light Face Mask. Let’s first back up for a minute and chat about the what and why.

What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy delivers low-wavelength red light that penetrates the skin layers, reaching the mitochondria which then produce more energy, leading to cellular regeneration and improved function. Devices deliver red (630 nm) and near infrared light (830 nm) on your face or other body parts. Red Light provides wavelengths of light similar to the sunlight but without the heat or UV rays.

It’s really taken off big time in the health and wellness world over the past year and is also being used more often in the beauty arena as well. I got a facial a few months ago and the treatment included 20 minutes of a red light mask.

Red light treatment can be administered through handheld devices/boxes, face masks, larger panels emitting red light, and even through ball caps worn for 10 minutes a day to promote hair growth.

Why use Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy can be used for a variety of purposes, including pain relief, sleep improvement, healing from injury or sickness, wound healing, reducing wrinkles, improving skin texture, treating acne, reducing inflammation, managing pain, and promoting hair growth. 

My Personal Experience with the HigherDOSE Red Light Face Mask

My initial personal interest in the red light face mask stemmed from some light but stubborn dermatitis that would not budge from my forehead. A quick history on that: about a year ago I noticed my forehead getting rougher in texture. I thought I needed more exfoliation so I tried that route and it only made it worse. I was having a facial done around that time and the aesthetician noted that “wow, you have some angry skin on your forehead; what products are you using?”

At the time I was using primarily face oils and I had really liked them for a long time. She explained to me that as we get older, it’s not unusual for our skin to change and apparently my skin was not liking the oils anymore. With a heavy heart I went on a search for products that would work better for my, ahem, aging, skin. I followed the advice of Emily Morrow and bought the cleanser, serum, and moisturizer from ClearStem. Within a month my skin did almost a complete 180! I was so thrilled, but yet, a small amount of stubborn dermatitis remained.

This led me to look into red light therapy. I was familiar with the HigherDOSE brand because I’ve been a fan of their sauna blanket from years ago. When the face mask arrived, I was impressed by the packaging. It was so neatly organized and packaged, and the instructions for set up and use of the face mask were clear. I immediately charged it to use that night.

The Red Light Therapy Face Mask has two options:

A 10 minute treatment and a 20 minute treatment that are on a set timer, so you can select, then go about doing whatever you’d like and it will turn off after the designated time is complete.

I washed my face, applied the Glow Serum, and secured the mask by using the three Velcro straps. The mask is easy to put on and comfortable. When you first turn it on you will feel like the light of 1000 suns is shining on you, but after a minute your eyes adjust. HigherDOSE recommends using the red light therapy cycle to rest, meditate, pray, sauna, listen to a podcast, etc. If you go this route you can use the included eye protection goggles. While that sounds lovely, I personally strap mine on and use the time to fold laundry. Afterwards, I apply my serum and moisturizer like normal.

My initial reaction to my first use was, ah, that feels nice. I didn’t notice any difference is appearance or feel, and didn’t really expect to after the first use. However, it did feel luxurious, and while it is known to help boost your mood, it may also be because I equate it in my mind with a facial experience. 😉

Seeing Results

I started using it every night (it’s recommended to use for a minimum of 10 minutes, 3-5 times a week). Before the end of the first week, my forehead dermatitis was almost gone. By the end of the second week it was completely gone. I was shocked. So much so that I couldn’t foresee how to review this without sounding a a raving fanatic, but I was thrilled! With so many newer age health products and devices, it’s so hard to see a noticeable difference. I understand that doesn’t always mean they are producing an effect, but it was wonderful to see tangible results from the red light face mask on my skin.

Since then, I’ve continued to use it regularly, probably 6 nights a week. But that’s not all. David uses it almost as much as I do. Hailey (13) has started using it, too, to help with healing from teenage skin annoyances. The outer case of the Red Light Face Mask is made with medical-grade silicone. The LED bulbs are attached to this. It’s easy to wipe down between uses or when sharing with another person.
