A Halloween, or any holiday, on a Monday kind of makes you wrinkle your nose a little, doesn’t it? Add in a forecast of cold rain all day, and a household still trying to get it’s energy back and I have all I need to try and keep expectations for the day nice and low. That’s exactly what I did and to my pleasant surprise, it turned out to be a really, really nice Halloween!
I was able to get Finley out for a bit before the rains came, but once they came, it was a cold and solid rain for hours upon hours. The girls and I spent our day sticking eyeballs on food, watching Coraline (the creepiest kid movie of all time) and Beetlejuice, roasting pumpkin seeds, and painting the kids’ nails with glow in the dark polish.
It was a cozy day. I made David’s chili and a simmer pot to make the house smell cozy. We watched the forecast and kept our expectations low. We contemplated umbrellas and just visiting our street. Then, incredibly, at around 5:00 PM, the rain ceased. BOOM. Just like that we ended up with a soggy but cool night for trick or treating!
The kids were over the moon, and we all put the finishing touches on our costumes and turned on haunting music while we waited for our friends to arrive. Once they did, we all ate chili then headed to our sweet neighbor’s home, always our first stop, before heading out for the evening. Can you guess what we were?
Yes, the girls and I are straight out the 1980’s! But take a closer look and you’ll see that we are hanging out with…. TED!
When David emerged with a freshly shaven face and I about fell over! If he’s not spot on as the most perfect Ted Lasso you’ve ever seen, I just don’t believe you. Surprising him with that costume was worth every single penny.
The rain ended up holding off for the entire evening and we trekked almost three miles around our neighborhood trying to keep up with the kids. We had some really creative neighbors that created haunted trails and spooky garage scenes and the kids LOVED it. They finally tired of hauling around their candy and we headed back to homebase for the best part- the sorting and trading of all the goodies!
Hailey and Kaitlyn each picked out some of their favorites (Kitkats for K, and Mounds for H… I think it’s hilarious that Mounds are her candy of choice), then they bagged most of it up. Our chiropractor pays $1/lb of leftover candy to donate and the kids think that’s just fabulous. So do I.
And that’s a wrap on Halloween! Time to put up the stockings!! Ok, ok… maybe not quite yet, but I’m not opposed to letting a Christmas movie start to slip in here and there… happy November!
