Hello from Hilton Head Island!
Yes, that’s me, mid kick-over. Mama’s still got it!
…I will neither confirm nor deny a slightly injured right toe that occurred when “mama” still thought she could do a round-off too. #thewinemademedoit
burn
We’re down for a quick visit (hooray for Charlotte being close to so many beaches making these quick trips possible). I plan on soaking up every minute and snapping a lot of pictures because evening beach light is my favorite.
So while I was packing snacks to bring with us, I realized there are a few food products I’m really loving lately that I thought would be fun to share with you. Starting with
Sprout Rise Organic Protein Smoothie
I try not to rely too much on convenience foods for the girls, but these have been great to have around lately for a snack on the go. They girls say they are delicious and I like that it has a boost of protein from brown rice. The only thing I would change is that they use nonfat yogurt and I prefer full fat, but since the girls get plenty of healthy fat on the regular, I don’t worry too much about it. The ingredient list is super clean and they were on sale at the new Publix in town, so I stocked up!
Goji Berries
So I know goji berries are not a new thing, but honestly, I don’t think I’d ever eaten one straight up until recently. They are slightly sweet and super chewy. I really like them! I tossed a bunch in a bag with pistachios, almonds, and craisins to bring with me to the beach. Perfect swim snack to keep us fueled!
Adora Organic Dark Chocolate Calcium Supplements
Don’t let the calcium supplement part of the label throw you off, these organic dark chocolate disks are DELICIOUS. I’m an ambassador for Adora and enjoy 1 or 2 disks in the afternoon, but who is really loving them lately is my kids. Before anyone freaks out that I’m giving my kids a supplement, let me tell you it was doctor recommended for my two girls. Hailey and Kaitlyn don’t (won’t?) drink milk. They have a well-rounded diet and take vitamins, so I don’t worry too much about it but at Kaitlyn’s 2 year well check, the doctor recommended I keep a close eye on their calcium intake and gave these a thumbs up. I can tell you, the girls aren’t hating getting a boost of calcium in chocolate form.
Yumbutter
I’m pretty certain I’ve shared my affinity for Yumbutter before but I can not get enough of this smartly-packaged almond butter! It comes in other varieties too (cashew butter, peanut butter), but I’m so hooked on this specific variety that I have yet to branch out. It’s so easy to toss in your bag and squeeze mess-free straight onto and apple or banana. So good!
Collagen
Julie recently wrote a great post on collagen and I finally bit the bullet and bought some. I’m only a few weeks into it, but I love how quickly and easily it dissolves into any drink, warm or cold. I’m taking it to see if I can tell a difference in my hair and I got David to take it because it is supposed to help with joint support and because he does Crossfit and I do Burn Bootcamp, a little extra joint support can’t hurt! So far so good, but I’ll report back with more in depth findings in a month or two.
And with that, I’m off to the beach! Actually, it’s 4:30 am and I couldn’t sleep so I’ll probably wait a couple hours before heading back to the beach. You know, maybe at least until the girls get up. 😉 Have a great weekend!
What are some food products that you’re loving lately?

I just have to mention…..Hailey looks so grown up in that photo on the beach.
Where does time go?????????

She puts on that beach hat at suddenly looks 18 to me. It’s crazy to me. The exact definition of bittersweet!

Just got some of those pouches from Publix for Lincoln. They’ve been great for traveling and baseball practice!

#1 I love love love Hailey’s swimsuit! So adorable!
#2 I have been reading about collagen benefits on a couple of the blogs I regularly read and have an order on it’s way to me now to give it a whirl 🙂

I’ve recently started taking collagen as well and can definitely tell a difference in my hair! It’s so silky smooth.. And easy to just pour into my morning coffee. My favorite food lately is PB2 powdered peanut butter… But what’s new there!

I have never seen the sprout protein smoothies! I’ve been trying to get more protein in my kids diets in the mornings and have been brainstorming what I could do. Love this idea for before school when it’s always hard to get them out the door.
I’ve been using collagen for about 8 months and my nails are so strong now I have to clip them – I’ve never in my life had to clip my nails cause they always broke off.
Brittany Dixon says
Oh I love the feedback about the collagen- that’s so encouraging! I’m hoping it will make my hair grow more quickly but stronger nails would be amazing as well. Thanks!

I really need to find some of those Adora supplements. I know I probably don’t get enough calcium in my diet, but neither does my 4 year old who doesn’t drink milk of any kind on a regular basis. Chocolate, though? Oh, he’ll eat that. :p I’m also thinking I could use some Collagen. I’ve been meaning to add it to my diet for a while now, but love that the kind you use dissolves easily in drinks and is tasteless. I’ve been trying to exercise more, but definitely notice a lot of aching in my knees that is discouraging (bad knees run in my family) so maybe this would help with some of that over time. Love all of the great finds!

Is there a difference between collagen and gelatin?
Brittany Dixon says
My limited understanding is that the powdered collagen is just a more convenient way to get similar benefits. I did find an article that seems really helpful on the topic– http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/gelatin-and-collagen-hydrolysate-whats-the-difference/ Hope it helps!

the last few days I’ve munched on shelled pistachios instead of potato chips, which has been a good trade although i love me a good chip. Also, that photo of H, is she 13!?!?!
Brittany Dixon says
She does look 13 doesn’t she?! SOB!! Pistachios are some of my favorites. I love the taste and if I get the ones still in the shell it does a good job at slowing me down 😉

Oh I love the feedback about the collagen

They’re smart not to want to drink milk! Although it contains some calcium, it is not absorbed and ultimately dairy consumption actually causes a calcium deficit in humans. Really, it’s breast milk for baby cows! Health issues aside, it’s heartbreaking to think of the mothers in such distress, whose babies are taken away to slaughter so humans can drink their food.
