Yesterday’s snow took me by surprise.
A beautiful inch and a half that left me scrambling to rearrange appointments and scraping the bottom of our craft drawer. Fortunately it allowed me ample time to make breakfast.
And second breakfast.
On snow days I eat like a hobbit.
I’m still digging the zoodle trend, this time with onions, tomatoes, red pepper flakes and a sprinkle of feta.
I felt a little wild and tried my hand at spiralizing a sweet potato, which turned out to be an epic fail.
Long, stringy pieces of baked sweet potato get stuck awkwardly in a baby’s mouth? Who knew. I took one for the team and gobbled them down myself.
The snow stopped by noon, but was still pretty to look at.
I did my best to summon warmer weather by blending up a strawberry smoothie. Then I remember it’s only February and I need to just chill out (pun intended).
We had a couple contractors to the house yesterday, which made the day pass quickly. Before I knew it, I was downing a bowl of leftover black bean soup and getting the girls ready for bed.
I was grateful the streets were clear because even if they weren’t I probably would have risked going out after the girls were down. My play group has been trying to organize a girls’ night for some time and we were determined to make it happen, come h*ll or high… snow drifts.
We debated going out to dinner, but Alise offered to host us and how she managed this spread after putting both her kids down is beyond me. Did I mention her house was spotless too? Teach me your ways!
The night was awesome. Four of the six of us were able to make it, and though we wondered what it might be like to try and carry on a conversation without the screaming of preschoolers or the mischief of busy babies, we quickly found out that we are totally capable of adult conversation that didn’t 100% have to do with our kids. Who knew?!
Girlfriends are the best. Conversation flowed, as did the wine, from discussing marriage and family to a game (my first game) of Cards Against Humanity, so it’s safe to say we covered the full gamut of topics.
I didn’t get to bed until close to midnight, which explains why my wit is dulled this morning, but hey, I’m up and at ’em and that’s half the battle, right?
We’re expected to get more snow tonight, so a trip to Michael’s is in order because we need craft glue and more googly eyes, perhaps some more sticker… and wine. Michael’s should really have a wine section. But first, I’m going to get my workout on at BBC if I can push through the DOMS I still have hanging around from my last class…
Work out then wine… balance.
How do you fill up snow days?

Girls nights are the best!!!! And I love that game! My snowed in Saturday, consisted of laundry and movies! Loved every minute lol!

Try being stuck inside for 6 weeks….I can’t keep too much food in the house because all I do is eat to entertain myself! Snow is only fun and pretty for like….a day!
Erica { EricaDHouse.com } says
Oh man Cards Against Humanity is the best game every while drinking
Jen says
Please tell me how to entertain a nine month old during a snow day! Ugh! I was very surprised to wake up to 4 inches yesterday, and they’re calling for 3-5 more inches for Asheville tonight. And we live on top of a mountain. Where the road is not plowed. Can you have wine delivered?
Brittany Dixon says
Rookie- you totally should have stocked up on wine! 😉
K has been a fan of tearing up the tupperware cabinet lately so there’s always that! Haha

Girls nights rock!! It awesome you had a fun Tuesday night!
On snow days I always like to do things around the house that I’ve either been putting off or getting some chores out of the way so I can enjoy the outdoors when the snow stops. But to be honest, its usually ends up me lounging on the couch and catching up on missed shows. At least I try, right?!
Brittany Dixon says
You have no idea how much I’d love a day of catching up on shows on the couch- that sounds so nice!! Enjoy it 🙂

Girls night on a Tuesday sounds pretty fun! Though, I definitely wouldn’t want to go to bed at midnight and wake up for work. haha. I’m such an old lady! Looks like you had a great time! Shesh, I wish we would get some snow in CA!
Brittany Dixon says
Haha I know! I kept staring at the clock thinking oh man, I’m going to regret this come 5am!

Snow days are always filled with cleaning and lots of Netflix under a blanket. I love being trapped inside for a day and finding ways to get creative, it shakes things up. But after a day I’m like, “Let me out!” Haha.

Oooh I need to get a girls night going with the new group of mama friends I’ve formed since moving to Denver over a year ago. It’s tough when all the kiddos are so small, but I think our group can finally manage it.
On snow days, I like to find a few good movies, at least one good book, and find a moment of peace (when the baby is sleeping?) to sit down and enjoy a little downtime.

Enjoy your snow! Also, thank you for including my blog about how a parent’s marriage affects a child’s brain development. Had 350 reads of it. Your writings and generous inclusion of others’ efforts add pertinent insights for those inclined to learn and move forward to a more generous “healthy slice of life”!

I live in Minnesota, so we don’t really get snow days here. At best we get delays when the wind chill is -30 degrees. :p However, when I do get an unexpected day at home with my kiddos due to inclement weather we tend to keep it very low key and make the entire day a pajama day and play, play, play. I don’t clean and we’ll try and build a fort or play a game we rarely play. Plus baking. It just feels right on a snow day. 🙂
Jodie says
I’m from MN too and was thinking “what snow days?” 😉
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, yes, here in the south a dusting on snow or a temperature of less than 10 degrees shuts down the schools. We just aren’t equipped to handle it like you pros up north! 🙂
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
Cards Against Humanity is SO fun! I’m glad you enjoyed time with girlfriends. 😀 I love all this food!
Jodi says
My firiend and I had our mommy’s pizza and wine nite w the kids last nite since our hubbies were both OOT! Makes for a fun nite for everyone and passes the time when it’s been a long day! ( tho gni wo kiddos probably allows for more full sentences….) wine, oh wine, how I love thee…..
We do crafts, crafts and more crafts…..baking, movie watching, wine drinking ( hey relaxes everyone…) and well, I’m I ally prepared w two sleds, snow pants and boots! So technically we better be outside a lot!!

This weather has just been crazyyyy!
Your zoodles look beautifully yummy! What kind of spiralizer do you own?
Brittany Dixon says
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Paderno-World-Cuisine-A4982799-Tri-Blade/dp/B0007Y9WHQ and have been very pleased with it!

I would take 2 inches any day! I am in Boston…going on 7 feet now! I would shovel a tunnel to get to a girls night at this point! 🙂
Liz @ LovePenelopen says
How funny, we live in sunny California but today the water has been shut off all day and I refuse to leave without my morning shower. So we’ve been stuck inside all day coloring and chasing my baby around the house. I really need to start looking into joining playgroups though…how did you find yours?
Brittany Dixon says
Oh gosh, I found this play group from a random day at gymboree when our babies were all about 6 months. We just got each others’ numbers and have been meeting weekly ever since! I met another friend at the grocery store and another at the library. I’ve gotten really comfortable with asking for others’ numbers. It’s like dating again ha!
Liz says
Yeah I’m going to have to get out there a little more.. it really is like dating again!
