Here in the south, we don’t see much snow. In fact, sometimes a mere dusting is enough to shut down the city. So when we get a few inches?! The world stops spinning. Seriously.
But survival is possible, believe it or not, if you have the right supplies. Starting with oatmeal.
Enjoy your hot oatmeal (I’m sorry… I’m one person who doesn’t like overnight cold oats- ick) with frozen (how fitting!) organic blueberries and almonds. If you put the blueberries in before your microwave it, it’s delicious!
Microwave?? I don’t make them stove top?! TRUE STORY.
After breakfast, get to work on dinner. Brown some grass-fed, antibiotic free beef, then throw it in the slow cooker with kidney beans, chopped onions, chopped green pepper, garlic, diced tomatoes, bay leaves, tomato sauce, and spices. Let it simmer all day while you…
head outside to warm up.
Huh?
Yes, you heard me…
& build a snowman while you’re at it!
& don’t forget to taste the snow to make sure it’s real:
After realizing you don’t have Fritos for the chili, it’s ok to freak out.
Just pull yourself back together and whip up some cornbread instead.
It’s OK if it isn’t very healthy. Your chili is!
Enjoy your chili and cornbread while you park yourself in front of the TV while watching the National Championship Game. Be happy about the SEC claiming a 5th consecutive National Championship Title… even though you might have been secretly cheering for the Ducks because that arrogant Cam Newton doesn’t play for them 😉
What’s your best winter survival tip?!
Jess Mathias says
Ahhhh I’m so jealous of the hot tub right now. that would be soooo awesome in the snow. we got about 7 inches at the house, Joe is in Atlanta, so i’m stuck at home with the 2 pups. They LOVED the snow and ate a ton of it. it was hilarious. Good thing I have Netflix on the Wii. Hope you’re feeling better! 🙂

Hmm… winter survival tips. Even if you’re only planning to be out on a quick errand, do wear a warm coat, gloves, warmer shoes or boots, etc. You just never know when you might have a mishap that puts you out in the cold for longer than you’d planned.
Hot chocolate or apple cider is wonderful after a day of sledding! Could you survive without it? Sure. But, it feels great to warm up with a cup after coming in from the snow.
And, while I said yesterday that it was NOT snowing here… I was wrong. It started snowing shortly after I said that, and then it snowed lightly all day.
Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans says
My winter survival tips would be: Bundle up, wear good boots (no one wants to slip and fall), enjoy hot chocolate often, catch up on all the movies you didn’t see in the summer bc you were having too much fun outside!
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
First of all, you actually just made me have a sudden desire to make oatmeal….something that hasn’t happened in over three months. [And no worries on the microwave…that was how I survived for two years teaching…there aren’t many stovetops available in elementary schools.]
Secondly, I want that chili. Do you think it would survive in the mail?

looove it!! I wish I was at your house for snow day! You know hanging out with you and a hot tub…sounds like my recipe for a great day! Love you!
Caree@Fit-Mama says
I need to be over at your house!!! I haven’t had the energy to cook for days.
I haven’t even tried cold oats and I see everywhere on the blog world. Doesn’t sound appealing to me tho.
We got a dusting (1-2 inches) on Sunday and that is A LOT for TX!!
Autumn @ Good Eats Girl says
There is nothing better than a snow day spent in the hot tub…it’s so fun to see the snow falling around you! Love it! You had the perfect snow day in my opinion!
I’m so jealous of you never getting much snow! I need to move south! 🙂

sorry for the double post but i’ve been meaning to tell you about http://www.6pm.com – it’s the zappos outlet store. it has some awesome deals for workout gear — just look up the brand you’re interested in. for example today they are promoting a huge asics sale and timex. thought you would like to know about it if you didn’t already 🙂
Alexis @ There She Goes says
going in the hot tub in the snow is the best!
Alexis says
Are you top secretly watching me?! Because that post seriously described my day TO A TEE….especially the Scam Newton part 🙂
This snow is insane!!! (try being stuck @ home with the parental units for 48 hours…ahhh)
LauraJayne says
I’m an oatmeal microwaver too – in fact, I use the microwave whenever it won’t negatively affect the meal I’m making. Without the microwave, I’d never make it past breakfast!
Meg says
Hahaha, my dad went to Auburn, so I HAD to root for them… but Cam Newton is such a tool.
Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks says
I’m from San Francisco, so winter doesn’t hit us very hard. It never snows. We just get rain. We usually have very moderate temperatures. Except for this week. When it hit the 30s.
My survival tip: Order your jacket from The North Face and pick up some gloves BEFORE it get so cold that you feel like your hands are going to fall off.
TheHealthyapron says
wow, you have more snow than we do! I like to eat warm, cozy foods like chili, hide under the blankets with a good book, and bake!! All indoor things but make me feel all warm (even if only on the inside) ha
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
Yum! I love my slow cooker – obviously!
My survival tip is to have lots of good movies and books! I miss my snow days so much since I moved to CA!

Cornbread?! I LOVE CORNBREAD!!!! And chili-the combo…my mouth is watering!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
I love the “tasting” the snow.
And your cornbread looks aaabsolutely delicious. I’ve never made cornbread! I have to add that to the repertoire.
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Hot tubs are PERFECT for the snow! That poor snowman must have been too warm for his own good, though. 😛 It really is funny how everyone acts like the world’s coming to an end whenever it flurries! haha
Alycia [Fit n Fresh] says
So cute! My best winter survival tip is to have a good book and a warm blanket – cause you’ve got plenty of time 🙂
Kelly says
A good book or a good movie is great on a cold wintry day! Soup doesn’t hurt either.
That’s so cool that you have an outside hot tub. What a fun day to use it!)
Lindsay says
I wouldn’t survive these long Canadian winters without oatmeal, soup, chili and great books! Stay warm!
Rochel says
I also don’t like cold oats. I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t jump on the overnight oats train.
