It appears our ‘usual’ morning nap isn’t happening this morning, so I’m attempting to blog this out with a 13 day old baby on my lap. It isn’t as easy as one may think.
Know what helps? Playing this through my computer speakers. 😉
Know what else is challenging? Feeding yourself with one hand, but that’s exactly what I did yesterday when I was home alone for a full day.
Breakfast
…was easy enough. Go Lean Crunch with 1/2 a banana, chia seeds and almond milk.
A spoon only uses one hand. Easy Peasy.
Apparently being a mom now entitles me to say lame things like ‘easy peasy’.
Lunch
…was a bit more challenging. The turkey sandwich was easy enough, but surprisingly the salad was not. I needed an extra finger to scoop up some of the salad goodies, and may or may not have resorted to just licking my plate.
The Afternoon
…was snacky. Crackers, hummus, a prune (what? They’re actually tasty!) and a chocolate chip cookie bar (DANGEROUS!) brought over by a friend from our church mom’s group.
I also chowed down on an entire steamable frozen bag of edamame. A great one-handed snack! A not-so-great picture.
Dinner
…this week is brought over daily by friends from the mom’s group at church. How nice, right?? Yesterday Tamara brought chili over macaroni. It’s so nice to not have to think about dinner.
I know I usually do the calorie count, but I have no clue how many I ingested yesterday. I’ll get to that at some point, but for now I eat when I’m hungry and try to add in some greens when I can.
I’m still in survival mode, people! 😉
Speaking of eating, Hailey turns into a little caterpillar after she gets a tummy full of milk. It’s really freakin’ cute!
Have you ever had to do everything one-handed from an injury, baby, etc?
What was the most challenging task?
So far I can do laundry, empty the dishwasher and feed Koda all with one hand, but I cant fill up my water bottle from the filtered water in the fridge- so frustrating!
Jen says
I cannot imagine how challenging everything must be for you now! But you’re doing great- so impressed you’re blogging. Hailey is such a cutie! And I’m insanely jealous of your turkey sandwich 🙂
Brittany says
I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed turkey lately! I didn’t even know I missed it… not much longer for you! 🙂 Hope you are feeling better.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I’m impressed! I’ve never been limited to one hand but I have been to one foot and let me tell you, THAT is hard! Hailey’s caterpillar pose is adorable 🙂
Shari says
Hailey is the cutest little caterpillar ever! 🙂
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
You don’t have to be a mom to say “easy peasy.” 🙂
blackhuff says
I love the picture of Hailey. So cute.

I ate a lot of luna and cliff bars the first few weeks as a mom. I would just get too busy/forgetful to eat. Then when I sat down to nurse it his me and I was ravenous. I also loved my moby wrap. Great way to hold baby nice and snug to my body while still having 2 hands free to eat and do everything else I needed to while baby wanted to be held.
Alex @ The Plum Foodie says
Believe it or not, I used to breastfeed my daughter by cradling her with my left arm and walk around getting stuff done and using my right hand. My mom would look at me like I was a crazy person but I didn’t think anything of it!
Brittany says
Now that’s talent!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I had to get stitches in a few fingers a few years ago which made it hard to use my left hand — but I don’t think that is even close to holding onto a baby and trying to do things.
I like prunes too — I think the taste is good!
Madeline@Food, Fitness, and Family says
I tore my rotator-cuff in my right shoulder and was sling-bound for awhile leaving me with only my left-hand. And I am right-handed. My husband (then boyfriend) had to put my hair in a pony tail every morning. Haha.
Maybe it gave me practice for what is about to be my life too within the next 3 weeks 🙂
Kimberly @ Healthy Strides says
Welcome to motherhood! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve eaten a meal while nursing. My husband has had to cut my food like I was a kid so I could pick at my plate. I now manage to do most things while holding my lo. Well, except for personal hygiene and doing my hair.
Congrats – she’s beautiful!
Michelle {lively kitchen} says
I’m impressed you got pictures of your food – apparently you can work a camera with one hand too. 🙂
Does Hailey like the sling/wrap? I can’t imagine life with a baby without one. It will free up a hand and leave her sweet little head in just the right spot for kisses.
Brittany says
What kind of wrap do you have? I started looking into them yesterday and think I need to invest in one before my left arm falls off.
Michelle {lively kitchen} says
I had several and they all have their merits, but I think a Moby Wrap (or something similar) is great with a newborn. It keeps them upright, distributes the weight over both shoulders for your comfort (I wore both my kids all the time, so I needed a wrap that would be comfortable for all-day wearings [is that a word?]) and the baby is nice and tight against you. As she gets older I can recommend different styles. 🙂
erin says
Totally agree..moby wrap style (I had one of these http://www.loveyduds.com/) wrap is the best for a newborn. I never found slings to be comfortable and my son preferred to be upright. I like that with the moby I could move the material to keep his head nice and snug against me.
Once he was older, 5 months, I loved the Ergo.
Susan @ Real Life Travels says
Oh yeah … Good that your learning the one hand-ness early 😉 I struggled with it in the beginning!
Sherry says
Hailey looks like she is doing yoga stretches–after all she has been at it for months! What a cutie!
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
Adorable! Oh, and you’re not the only one who likes prunes. Yummy!
Luckily, I have not had to do much of anything one-handed. The only things that seem to get injured are my knees and feet.
Maryea {Happy Healthy Mama} says
She’s such a doll! You definitely need to invest in a baby carrier. 🙂
Christie says
I remember those days like it was yesterday- probably because it’s only been 10 months! You’ll be amazed at what you’re able to do one-handed!
Hailey is adorable! We might have to get together for a playdate someday (I think we’re pretty close by- LKN area)!
Brittany says
Oh how fun! I’d love to have a playdate as soon as Miss Hailey is ready 🙂
Melissa G says
You aren’t alone in the one hand typing, eating, etc thing. Isn’t it fun? If you need two hands & your baby is a little fussy, I’m not sure if you have one, but I use to put our little one in a front carrier. That way they are close but you still have two hands. Keep the baby posts coming, &… what you’re eating. I just made your vegan lentil chili, LOVE!!!! Thanks for sharing!! =)
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Teachers say Easy Peasy too.. Add in “Macaroni and Cheesey” or “Lemon Squeezy”.. 🙂
I once had surgery on my thumb and was casted. Even after the surgery, (and even now) I didn’t have full use/movement of my thumb. Button was super hard. And so was taking lids off of jars!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
She is SO freakin cute! One of the cutest babies I’ve seen!
I have that same bowl you have your edamame in. ; )
Heather @ girlyeverafter says
Hailey is so precious! It’s almost impossible for me to eat with one hand. With or without injury, I don’t see how you do it. That must be a maternal instinct no one talks about;)
Lauren says
Such a cute theme! Albeit a slightly frustrating one for you 🙂 I resort to licking plates even when I have two hands.
P.S. “Easy peasy” = mom status, but prunes? That’s old lady right there 😛
Brittany says
Haha! Don’t hate on my prunes 😉
Marlène says
I agree with previous posters about the Moby Wrap. I have the Sleepy Wrap (same sort of thing) and it’s GREAT! Especially when baby is fussy, they settle right down in the wrap because it’s so warm and close to mamma. And I”ve been able to do dishes and tidy with LO strapped to me.
Youtube helped me a lot in getting the right fit and tie for my newborn (who is just 8 days old).
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
Oh, how I can relate!!! And I’m impressed you managed a sandwich one handed. Those were always the hardest for me! Sad, because you know how much I love my sandwiches. 😉
And I think you are approaching your eating habits right now just perfectly.
Jill says
Good job on getting things done with one hand! I am a nanny and have had to do the one handed thing many a time. It’s amazing how much you can do without that other hand helping out. Your baby is addorable, by the way!
christina says
with one hand! haha! thank goodness you have people providing you with food. 🙂 post more pics! 🙂
Erin @ The Grass Skirt says
I love the title of this post! Your WIAW posts are always the most entertaining in the blog world. 🙂 Luckily, the most I’ve ever had to deal with as far as my hands and arms is a broken nail!
Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well says
I totally lick my plate on lots of different occasions! Even when I can use both of my hands…which actually makes plate-licking even easier 🙂
Roz says
Hi Brittany. Hailey is so lovely. Love the “caterpillar” description. I hurt my arm MANY years ago, and was one handed for a couple of days. Putting on a bra is physically impossible. I had a male room mate at the time who came to my rescue. Good thing he was gay! 🙂
Hope you and both arms have a great day.
Brittany says
You sure he wasn’t just pretending to be gay so he could help you with your bra? 😉
Danica @ It's Progression Not Perfection says
Hailey is SO adorable!!
Love your WIAWs…looks like you’re eating fantastically, especially at this stage post-pregnancy!
Jen@FoodFamilyFitness says
Eating one handed takes practice, and I licked many a bowl and plate on more than one occasion 😉
You have the cutest little baby caterpillar!!!
Lindsay @ Schnoodle Soup says
1) I’m in love with your daughter
2) So many people eat macaroni with chili and I’ve never had it – I’ll have to give it a shot.
3) I can’t imagine all the new things you’re learning in mommyhood. Never actually thought about the eating one-handed thing!
Brittany says
I’ve said easy peasy before and I’m only 19 ;D
Congrats again, she is soooo precious!!!
Sarah says
I have licked my plate on several occasions…and I really have no excuse!
That caterpillar picture of Hailey- SO cute:-).
Emily says
haha I haven’t had 2 hands free in months 😉 sometimes, I don’t have any hands…you get used to it 😉
Lindsay says
It must be so hard to do everything with one hand. It looks like you do a pretty good job. Hailey is the cutest baby EVER!
Jennifer B. says
We need to get you a wrap my dear! 🙂
