Am I the only one that has felt overwhelmed with skincare? Serums? Lotions? Gels? There seems to be an endless list of types of products to choose from and for a long time I didn’t know what I needed or even which order to apply my products in. I was just grabbing items based on pretty packaging, slathering them on my face, and hoping for the best. That’s why I met Terri at just the right time. While I think it’s important to start getting into skincare early, my thirties is when I’ve noticed that using the right products and being diligent with my skincare routine are making a big difference in the appearance of my skin.
Over the past 18 months I’ve tried a couple treatments that have left my face feeling super hydrated and spoiled, but the biggest differences I’ve noticed are from the daily use of quality products. I know this because a couple months ago I ran out of my products, and just winged it for a few weeks. Immediately I developed dry patches, more frequent breakouts, and just a more dull overall appearance. I’ve tried several different lines, different face washes, different moisturizers and found a routine up that is working really well for me.
My skincare goals at 34 years old can mostly be summed up as this: age gracefully. The lines are slowly beginning to appear and are less quick to fade than they once were. I tell myself they are proof a life well-lived, though I do still crave a smooth appearance. Have I been tempted to do Botox? Yes. Have I? I have not. But I may at some point; I’m not sure. I might even do a VI peel this fall, but again, we’ll see. All I know for sure is that taking good care of my skin makes a difference in how it looks and feels and I’m glad that I finally took the leap, met with a professional, asked all my questions, and invested in my skin. Using medical grade skincare products have helped me with keeping my pores small, my lines less noticeable, and my skin clear and bright. Here is a look into my evening skincare routine.
Eye Make-Up Removal
I begin with taking off most of my eye makeup. I use a slightly damp cotton ball dipped into coconut oil and gently use that to remove my eye make-up. A single jar of coconut oil lasts forever (about a year) and easily removes even the most stubborn mascara.
Cleanse
Without a doubt, changing how I cleanse had made the biggest and most immediate difference in my skin. I always washed my face with water and whatever face wash from Target I grabbed that week. However, I started using the Clarisonic Mia 2 and within a week, all the tiny clogged pores around my nose disappeared and my pores shrunk. After trying out several cleansers, I returned to GloBiotics. It gets slightly sudsy, which I prefer, and leaves my face feeling clean, but not tight. It removes all my makeup as well. I love it so much that I went for the industrial size!
I simply pump a small amount of cleanser onto my wet Mia 2, lean over the sink, and let the brush work it’s magic. It had a timer, similar to an electric toothbrush, that let’s me know how long to clean each area of my face. The first 20 seconds are for my forehead, the second 20 seconds are for my nose and chin, then 10 seconds for each cheek. The I rinse well with water and pat dry.
Lines by SkinBetter
This product is one of my favorites, as it uses hyaluronic acid to topically fill the appearance of expression lines and a blend of two neuro-calming peptides (derived from a snail!) to make expression lines appear immediately smoother. I squirt a small amount in my hand and gently massage it into my forehead, around my smile lines, and on the one “elevens” line starting to appear between my eyebrows.
Eye Cream
I use eye cream both morning at night. My morning cream helps with puffiness, but Lumiere, my evening eye cream, is thick and luxurious, giving the sensitive eye area plenty of hydration over night. I use roughly the size of a grain or two of rice and gently pat it around my eyes.
Alpharet by SkinBetter
This product is the winner of Allure Magazine’s Best of Beauty in 2018, and I see why. It combines two gold standard skin rejuvenation ingredients, a retinoid and lactic acid, to create a cream that significantly reduces the appearance of wrinkles in as little as four weeks, with little-to-no irritation. It also contains a potent blend of antioxidants helps provide protection against free radical damage. This product helps with cellular turnover, reducing pore size, and minimizing fine lines. A small squirt in the palm of my hand is all it takes to cover my face and most of my neck as well.
Even Tone Correcting Serum
This is a product by SkinBetter I just recently added into my routine to try and even out my skin tone. It does not contain any hydroquinone and instead uses a b.r.y.t. complex to breakup the appearance of hyper-pigmentation. I have a birthmark in the middle of my forehead and a dark spot on my cheek that I am hoping this will help fade.
Moisturizer
Finally, I use a good moisturizer to top it all off. I tend to have good results with the SkinBetter product line, so I use their moisturizer for both day and night. I use a dime-sized amount to cover my face, neck, and part of my chest.
I am so grateful that I finally found an evening skincare routine that works for me. One thing I’ve learned over the past year or two is how individualized skincare needs are. Similar to fitness or healthy eating, there is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Finding a good medical aesthetician that listened to my specific needs and doesn’t recommend unnecessary products has been skin-changing for me.
If you are where I was, knowing that you need to have a skincare routine that fits your specific skin but not knowing where to start, I encourage you to reach out to Terri! You can email her at Terri@CarolinaFacialPlastics.com or call her office at (704) 323-5090. She is offering A Healthy Slice readers a complimentary consult that can be done in person if you are local to Charlotte or over email/the phone if you are long distance. I love Terri because she will not push unnecessary products and has been very supportive as I have taken my time to to build my unique skincare routine. Having someone listen to my individual concerns and offer personalized solutions has made such a difference in my skin and I’m excited for you to get the same experience! Oh! She can ship any products right to you as well.
And now, a giveaway!
I am so in love with my Clarisonic Mia 2 that I am thrilled Terri offered me one to give one away to you! The Mia 2 is a gentle, two-speed cleansing brush that removes dirt, oil, and makeup up to six times better than hands alone, plus it comes with a a foaming gel cleanser. This has been a game changer for me!

laura says
Definitely the 11 between my eyebrows when I’m furrowing my brows at my class of 6 year olds or the lines on my forehead when something my husband or kids have done has left me speechless! =)
Helen says
Thanks so much for this post. I love hear what works for others. I think my biggest skincare concern is dry, dull skin. I’d like my skin to glow but I’m also super concerned about making sure that the skincare I use is safe and clean.

Very interesting post! I’ve thought about incorporating a new product or two, but super sensitive skin has made me reluctant to try anything other than my current Dove soap. My biggest concern is breakouts on my jawline and side of my neck. Not sure if they’re stress-induced or a gift of my mid-30s, but they’re really annoying!
Beth says
I have so many skincare concerns, but I am curious if a Clarisonic would help get rid of blackheads I have had for decades!
Ashley says
Oh! I really hope I win this Clarisonic. I’ve been eyeing them the last months – but haven’t been able to pull the trigger price wise. Your recommendation makes me think I should!
erin says
Would love to thy this! Biggest skin care concern… wrinkles and just aging in general. I felt like things really went down hill fast after 35, but I don’t even know where to begin with an anti aging skin care routine.

Laura W. says
Oddly excited about this post. Since turning 30 (a few years ago!) I have really struggled with skin care. Everything is either too harsh or not effective. Excited to try some of these.

It is a tie between sun damage and adult acne. The last year or so I have really noticed the sun damage and am trying to take better care of my skin. It’s been interesting to see how different products work.

I feel like dryness has always been an issue of mine. I’ve tried lots of lotions and potions. Also, I’m 33 and am starting to get those fine lines. I definitely need a treatment to help minimize them.

This post was so great. I started getting acne around my jaw line and neck right after my daughter was born last year and no matter what face wash I use I Cannot seem to clear up my acne. It feels horrible to have acne in my 30s. I have it worse now than when I was in high school.

I’m 47, and have always had sensitive skin. Even the most expensive products that I’ve tried have clogged my pores and created an acne nightmare. I was almost no makeup, and have found no moisturizers to work with my huge pores 🙂 and sensitive skin. Help, please!

As I turned 30 last year…. creeping up on 31 I have become more concerned with skincare. Not just skincare, but the type of products I’m putting on my skin! I have noticed my skin isn’t as bouncy as it use to be! I’m concerned with moisturizing and protecting my skin from future damage!

I have always been interested in seeing if the Clarisonic really cleans better. Have you looked into the ingredients in the skincare line mentioned? There are many potentially hazardous ingredients like parabens for example. I’m not meaning to knock your choices at all but thought you may just not be aware. I work with Beautycounter, a safer yet highly effective skincare company, so I’m always curious in checking out other skincare brands ingredients, which I why I looked at the site.
