You might have heard of the app called Reading Eggs. It’s one we’ve used off and on for a couple years now. But you might not know that the programming in the app contains several programs for different age levels including site words, reading skills, math, and now, Fast Phonics, too.
When you sign up for Reading Eggs, you get access to all their programming.
- Reading Eggs Jr is for children ages 2-4 years old and has games and activities to help build alphabet knowledge.
- Reading Eggs is designed for children 3-7 years old and offers structured lessons that teach phonics, site words, and reading skills.
- Reading Eggspress is for kids ages 7-13 and helps build confidence with literacy skills.
- They also have a math component, Math Seeds, for ages 3-9 that offers structured lessons to build essential math skills.
Recently they added a new program, Fast Phonics, that is the reason I decided to renew of subscription. Fast Phonics is a program designed for ages 5-10 years old that offers lessons that cover key phonics skills like letter sound recognition, blending, and spelling. This is the program I’ve been needing.
We use a combination of materials for our language arts curriculum including The Good and the Beautiful, Language Lessons for a Living Education, and Brave Writer material as well. I teach from books, then reinforce concepts with apps because my kids enjoy it so much they don’t realize they are still “doing school.”
However, I hadn’t yet found a program that focused on phonics (letter sounds) that fit our need until Fast Phonics. Because bless their hearts, but my children seem to have inherited my spelling skills (or lack there of).
The lessons in Fast Phonics are short, which works really well for us. My kids really love the Yeti characters used and the theme continues through the levels are lessons. Each “level” is referred to as a “peak” and each peak has 20 short lessons. Once the child works their way through a peak, they are given a book to read and a quiz to complete. Upon completion, they earn coins they can spend in the Yeti shop to buy different avatars (my kids love this incentive).
Now, a little caveat. Fast Phonics is not perfect. When observing the letter sounds in the early levels, there are some instances that they don’t seem to have things perfect, like using the /tuh/ sound for T rather than a crisp /t/. However, since we use it as supplementary practice, I am able to point those things out as needed while they continue to enjoy constructing words from letter sounds.
For us, this program has been really helpful. My kids (ages 9 and 6) both thoroughly enjoy it and ask to play it. It has helped them play with and practice spelling through understanding letter sounds and blends.
