Did everyone have a fabulous weekend?? And stay away from those fake sugars? 😉
I had a great weekend! Not only did I get to meet sweet baby Caitlyn (congrats Mark & Carrie!)
…but I also got to celebrate my brother’s big 3-0 with him!
The whole weekend was delightful, but once I got home last night, I was whipped. Unfortunately it meant I had to miss out on the Charlotte blogger dinner, but hopefully I can make it to the next one! Luckily my sweet Hubbs offered to make dinner for us and I jumped at the offer. What a sweet<3!
…it should have dawned on me that he had venison from his latest hunting trip in the freezer. And that he was anxious to try it out.
So sure enough… venison chili was on the menu. While Hubbs got things going:
I watched Christmas movies and looked up nutrition facts about venison…
Venison: AKA deer meat.
Meat | Calories | Fat | Sat Fat | Iron |
3 oz lean | ||||
deer | 127 | 1.6 g | 1 g | 3.6 mg |
beef | 185 | 9.3 g | 4.3 g | 1.5 mg |
pork | 171 | 5.9 g | 2.5 g | 1.2 mg |
chicken | 157 | 5.6 g | 1.8 g | 1 mg |
As you can see, venison is actually very lean and a great source of iron, which is important- especially for women!
And when it is all mixed up with veggies, beans and tomato sauce, it makes quite a beautiful chili! Especially when topped with sour cream and fritos 😉
However, it tasted a little more metallic and gamey to me than chili made with regular beef, and although I ate it and it was a good chili, I don’t know how often I see myself chowing down on venison. I think it’s a mental thing.
Poor Bambi. 🙁
But thanks for dinner, Hubbs! He even cleaned up. What a keeper!
Have you ever had venison? What do you think of it?

Growing up, my dad and older brothers hunted, but I refused to eat any venison. Poor Bambi, just like you said.
I have eaten venison as an adult. I’m not a big fan of the taste, but it is fine in some dishes. I sometimes use ground turkey in place of ground beef, and THAT took getting used to, so I could probably get used to venison, especially if my husband offered to cook. 😉
Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks says
I’ve never eaten venison. It IS the whole “Bambi” thing. Totally bums me out!
I do like those nutrition stats for it though!

That venison chili sounds delicious! I’ve only had deer a couple times, but I think the taste would work really well with a chili.

Such a beautiful baby! I have had venison – not bad!
Corey @ the runner's cookie says
Never had venison – my boyfriend loves it and would be very jealous! I don’t think I’d do too well with the gamey taste, but I’d be up for trying it..especially in chili when it’s mixed in with other stuff 😉
Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans says
I don’t eat any red meat these days but I can’t remember ever trying venision.
And I agree that dinner and cleanup= keeper!!

I LOVE venison! It’s so good for you! I had to miss the dinner too because I was stuck in the DC airport for five hours. 🙁

I feel ya on the venison, I’m not into gamey tasting meat either. Missed you at the dinner, but hope to see you soon!
Maria @ Oh Healthy Day says
Mmm, fritos.
I have only had deer jerky – not the cooked meat – but I love the stuff! My cousin always knows to send me some. I am a fan of it and like how good it is for you!

I’ve never had venison but I don’t know if I could eat it…I sometimes think about the food too much and then it makes me sick ya know?
melissa says
Yep, I’ve eaten it once and soaked in milk before cooking takes away the gameyness. My dad grilled it up and it was a super tender and tasty cut of meat.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
Oh I LOVE venison chili! We used to have it all the time when I was little and we’d visit my grandparents in Georgia. (My grandfather was a big hunter…)
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
You should also try making spaghetti sauce with it…YUM!
