I love you guys (…ok, probably mostly girls!).
I love that you stop by and say sweet things about K-dizzle. Flashback to puppy Koda! She’s even more fashionable than I am…even when dressed like a boy!
I love that you encourage me to hang in there and not reach up and pull this baby out myself. (How is that for a visual?!) (Soon… soon…)
I love sharing health facts and meal ideas with you. I love trying out new recipes to pass along to you when they’re worthy.
(Cornflake Encrusted Halibut– Worthy!)
I love writing about those topics because, well, I know those things!
But one thing I don’t love?
Dressing myself. I miss the days when Mom was in charge of my wardrobe… and trying to tame my crazy hair.
I’ve whined about not fitting into my clothes with this big ‘ol belly bump, but secretly I’ve relished in the fact that I can wear yoga pants and tank tops all the time and rotate the same 3 dresses and people still think I’m dressed cute (have I mentioned how sweet people are when you’re pregnant? They lie to you… and I like it ;))
The truth is I have ZERO fashion sense and you will never see a fashion section on A Healthy Slice of Life (you’re welcome).
Being short and curvy means I’ve always stuck to the basic rules of how to dress for your type. I wear dark jeans to minimize my thighs and heels to elongate my legs. I tend to stick to solid colored tops, too. And accessories? If you count my engagement ring and wedding band, then I own 2.
But here’s the deal… I want to dress cuter! I just don’t know where to start.
With fall, my FAVORITE season, coming up, I want to dress well and feel good in my clothes.
I’ve played around on Pinterest searching for fall fashion inspiration.
…but I haven’t come up with much besides acknowledging that I like boots. And wish I was taller and could pull off skinny jeans.
So my questions to you, fashionistas:
What is one staple item everyone needs in their fall wardrobe?
If I was only going to buy one shoe to wear with boot cut jeans, what should it be? (Color, style, etc?)
What color is in for fall and how is the best way to wear it?
What is your favorite store to shop at?
Links to your favorite fall pieces are welcomed and encouraged… as are any other tips you’d like to share with me and everyone else 🙂
Have a fabulous, fashionable weekend!

I’m not much of a fashionista myself, I never change up my accessories. My new obsession is watches, a nice looking watch always catches peoples eyes!
Michael Kors watches are very stylish and somewhat affordable (for a nice watch)! I just got this one and it matches with everything i wear and it’s so unique, I always get compliments on it!

Brittany I have no clue — I’m also a solid color lover and my jewelry consists of a necklace with my birthstone, my wedding rings and a few pairs of earrings that I rotate through!

I am right there with you on the short and curvy train. I have jeans for flat shoes and jeans for heels. Non-pregnant, I wear a lot of basic tops and like to accessorize them with fun jewelry or scarves. I’ll go get jewelry at Forever 21 or NY&Co. Target and American Eagle have great scarves. It appears that heeled booties are in for the fall. I <3 this page on Piperlime http://piperlime.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=49525&mlink=15956,3653774,textLinkRachelZoesPicks&clink=3653774. I'm eager to get back out there and find cute clothes and get my pre-pregnancy body back, too 🙂 I don't know if that helped at all, but there it is. Have a good weekend 🙂
Brittany says
Oh I love this whole page of picks! It gives me so many ideas to pick from- thanks for posting 🙂

Girl, I sooooo need help in this department too. I think my problem is I wear workout clothes more than half the time, so I have no idea how to dress cutely when the time comes. I’m eager to see the suggestions your readers come up with 🙂
Suzanne says
Oh, and I found some tall boots that were short enough that I can wear them with a pair of skinny jeans (only for tucking) and not look ridiculous.
Katie @ Legally Fit says
My favorite store is Banana Republic… my entire pre-pregnancy wardrobe is basically from there (I’m so original). I have the most gorgeous pair of tan leather (flat) boots from there that I pair (well, paired) with skinny jeans from Target.
blackhuff says
I can’t comment on what you ask because just like you I don’t have a fashion sense. Not that I don’t have it just because I prefer not to dress according to fashion but according to my age 🙂
Martha Jane says
Ok – so funny/weirdthatirememberthis thing!
When we were in geometry together at Sprayberry – I used to be SO jealous of you because you always had the cutest clothes and always looked so great!
And I remember you saying (almost) everyday, “Tomorrow I’m going to bum it…” But you never did! You always looked awesome and so well put together.
That doesn’t answer your fashion advice question (I’m no good with that either), but maybe you can look back and pull some fashion inspiration from your past! 🙂
Have a great day!
Brittany says
Haha, oh high school memories! You’re so sweet to say this because I feel like I’ve never had any fashion sense. Now when I say I’m going to bum it… I do… far too often. Go Jackets 😉
Brooke @ Veggie Table says
I probably need help in this department too but I have found a few things that work for the shortness (I’m 5’2 on a good day).
1) dark skinny jeans, heels, solid long top (to hide the fact that my bottom is busting out of the skinnies) and chunky, colorful jewels (usually bought at Forever 21 or Kohls – funky and cheap)
2) dark skinny jeans, unique fun top, with a solid long cardigan (again, to make it appear I’m not busting out of the skinnies)
3) also I think it’s fun to pair a solid shirt with crazy colored flats
4) must have for fall (or anytime) – huge over-sized purse
Happy Friday!

Boden has great clothes (bodenusa.com). They can be a little pricey, but they have unique clothes that are made really well. I usually buy a couple Boden pieces a year and always get tons of compliments! I like to read the reader reviews, it helps me figure out the best size to get. For jeans, I love Gap’s “Long and Lean” style in the darkest wash possible (and at 5’2, I’m neither long nor lean, but they fit great!) And Target and H&M are great for inexpensive basics!
Rachel @ Not Rachael Ray says
I’m no good at all in this area. But good luck! I just ventured into the skinny-jean world, even though I always thought I was a bit too thick for them. Long top, tall boots, good to go. I’m 5’10” but I’ve seen plenty of shorter girls pull of skinny jeans. Go for it! Whatever you’re comfortable in!
Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans says
Okay, here is my advice for a fall wardrobe (its my favorite fashion season)
Favorite outfit: Knit sweater dresses. Belt them to pull the look together. Tall “riding” boots and leggings look great.
For colour palettes I love earth tones like chocolate browns, tan and olive as well as purple.
Fabrics would most definitely include wool (chunky wool sweaters/cardigans are amazing)
Other great items: slouch boyfriend jeans, scarves, plaid shirts (grunge is back but in a chic way!) and leather (faux) bomber style jackets.
As far as shoes for a boot cut denim I would say a brown boot, 2 inch heel, slightly rounded toe.
Hope that helps!!
Jennie says
Hi! I am much better at getting dressed than I am eating healthy!! You help me with that so let me try to help you! 🙂
1) don’t be afraid of prints. But don’t spend a ton of money on them. This is where I go for sales/on the cheap because the “in” print is only in for about 10 minutes 🙂
2) I would invest the bulk of my fashion budget in a fall navy colored dress. You can change this look up endlessly with various tights, blazers, shoes, scarves, etc. Pick a quality brand that can withstand the many wears and washes (I recommend Ann Taylor or Ann Taylor loft).
3) Shoes– the right brown boot (a heel but at a size you are computable in) will go with jeans AND dresses is your best bet.
4) always ask multiple sales people for opinions. Remember to ignore those opinions when you need to, use them when you want to, and don’t let yourself be “talked into” anything. Most are actually really good at finding multiple uses for once garment – which I appreciate!!!
Hope this helps! Love your blog!

You can do skinny jeans and it will change your life! I too thought I would never be able to pull off the look, and now I will never go back (never say never). Skinny jeans will be your friend, allow you to wear adorable boots and long flowy tops! Just do it!
Donna@Life of a Happy Blonde says
You are so adorable!!!
I am all about the clasic pieces and then updating them with accessories – forever 21 and H&M are my favs
I love printed scarves with solid tops for some flair
And i agree with the other girls, short curvy girls like us can wear skinny jeans, i almost always tuck mine into boots though with a chunky sweater, super cute!
Good luck, maybe we will see some fashion posts soon??? 🙂
Brittany says
I do love jeans tucked into boots! …but don’t hold your breathe waiting to see any fashion posts around here 😉
Paulina says
Oh, fall is my absolute favorite season for many reasons, including fashion! I love pairing skinny or boot-cut dark jeans tucked into my tall (calf-length) boots and a longish sweater. Or the same jeans/boots with a cute top layered with a cardigan or those cute loose-fitting vests that have been popular. I think you could rock some cute ankle boots with your jeans too. As for color of boots, black or brown leather are equally versatile. OK that’s a lot about boots…
hmmm…a staple item for every wardrobe…I think having a great coat or jacket goes a looonng way. A classic belted trench coat can be dressed up or down and you can get creative and get one in colors other than black or tan. My friend got a super cute dark purple trench from Old Navy a few years ago that I love. For accessories, I like necklaces or earrings. If you wear longish sweaters, a long group of chains or a beaded necklace goes well. You have to keep the proportion equal with your own size, so you’d probably want to keep things more delicate than big and bold. As some others mentioned, Forever 21 has great accessories for really cheap.
I’m not sure what color is ‘in’ for fall, but I don’t really tend to follow trends too strictly. One of my favoite tv-shows that has great style advice is TLC’s What Not To Wear. As for the last question, my favorite store is TJ Maxx, but you need time to search there. I also like Macy’s, Express, and places like that.
Good luck! Have fun with it, don’t be afraid to try things on even if you think they won’t work for you. Oh and I recently read some advice about new-moms and clothing…it said to organize some outfits before the baby is born so that in the early days you don’t have to think or waste any time getting dressed and you can look put together rather than just wearing sweats everyday.
Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum says
You can do the skinny jeans. Just wear a longer top.
As for shoes, I say nice flats. You can wear them with capris, bootcut jeans (my fave), or skinny jeans. And they look put together without looking like you’re trying too hard.

AH! i need to read everyone’s comments! i pretty much live at ann taylor loft and banana republic bc they have petites. other than that, i LOVE piperlime (sale stuff!), lulus.com, shopruche.com, and forever21, francesca’s collections, and boden. my staples for fall are skinny jeans, boots, ballet flats, long cardigans, and cute, fun (but simple) accessories. oh gosh, do you use gchat? we could talk about this all day!
Nicole says
Honestly, the best place to shop for quality and comfort is Ann Taylor Loft. I love the clothing because the have a wonderful mix of casual and work appropriate clothing, that can be used for either or. Plus, they have a petite section, a maternity section and jewelry, etc. For jewelry, unless it is my wedding band, I don’t take it too seriously. Meaning, I am not going to spend a fortune on jewelry. Honestly, I will go into Forever 21 and go to the jewelry section. You can get a necklace or a pair of earrings for $3! They have so many different pieces to choose from, casual, going out, work, etc. I prefer going there because if you get something and it doesn’t workout the way you would have hoped, you are only out $3-5 dollars, compared to going to Target and paying $10.
One staple in your fall wardrobe would be a soft leather jacket or a pair of cute/comfy boots. I prefer the soft leather jacket or pretty much any jacket that would be universal in your wardrobe. The Instyle magazine for this month is full of ideas and you can take them and apply them to your current wardrobe.
The fall color is, I forget the name of the color, but it is a red color. They have shown it being used as a purse or a scarf but nothing too major. I wouldn’t be too concerned with fall fashion as one of the makeup colors for fall is a gold eye shadow (not my favorite). The whole aspect of fashion or clothing is to make you feel good and look good. You have to like what you’re wearing and just have some fun with it.
Remember you can buy clothing, take it home, try it on again and return what you don’t like. Just be yourself, try something you normally wouldn’t and remember you don’t have to match. Usually I will come home with a bag of clothes and have my dog sniff them to pick them out. Silly, I know, but you gotta have fun with it.
Cara @ ChicMeetsHealthy says
totally agree with this all! I love plum, creams, mustard and browns for fall! i think a bright colored pea coat is a great way to pull together a plain outfit. I got a great one on overstock for cheap and it is such great quality!
i love the riding boot style too because you can actually walk in them! plus you can pair them with stockings or knee socks underneath with a dress 🙂
Morgan @ Some Kind of Sunshine says
I agree with Nicole. The petite section at Ann Taylor Loft is perfect for us short and petite, but curvy girls. Their styles are sophisticated, calssic and maintain a more “youthful” trendiness all at the same time.
For me, I like to do layers in the Fall. Buy several cute tanks in different colors and pair them with neutral/colorful fall cardigans. Wear these with either bootcut or skinny jeans. You can accessorize by pairing them with light scarves or long necklaces.
As for the shoes. I would go for a close toed wedge. Like these.

I also love flats for the fall. Get one in brown, one in black.

We have similar body types and I am exactly the same! I keep it simple with jeans, solid shirts (sometimes stripes), and cardigans. During the summer I wear flip flops and in the winter I love boots and Ugg’s. Not much else besides that. I always wish I could dress way more cute, I just have no fashion sense!
Maria says
I’m short and curvy myself, so I hope that a lot of my ideas will work with you as well. But…I do tend to wear yoga pants on a daily basis, so please take my advice with a grain of salt.
I like to mix and match items from my favorite stores: J.Crew, GAP, LOFT, and Lands End Canvas. I used to be very fashion-deprived, but I decided to just pick a look/style I love and go with it. The best accessory is feeling good in your clothes – that shows!
My style is very preppy (cardigans, pearls, flowery scarfs) mixed with some laid back bohemian clothing such as comfy jeans, tees with scarfs (really – a scarf is the easiest way to make your somewhat boring outfit look fashionable) and Uggs for cold days. One of my favorite accessories besides the scarf is the skinnny belt. I love wearing a cardigan and wearing a skinny or stretchy belt over top of it to give it some shape. It emphasizes the waist. As far as shoes, for fall I really like suede shoes (ballet flats, wedges or boots) in jewel tones (plum, emerald green). I used to hate TOMS shoes, but I think with the right clothing, they can be cute (and super comfy for a new mom). I have a pair of their wedges and love them!
Wow that was some rambling – but remember, the best accessory is confidence in what you are wearing and you’ve already got that, so you are one step ahead of the game!

I’m guessing you don’t want to hear from me 🙂 But I look forward to reading the other comments!

Ok, this is fun! And for the record, you’ve always looked cute whenever I’ve seen you. 🙂 I think a nice pair of boots are essential for the fall/winter. They can go with anything! I’m big on yellows, but I bet that reds would look great on you. My favorite stores are J. Crew, Anthropologie, Ann Taylor Loft, and Banana Republic. One thing that I like to do is go on their websites and try to recreate some of the looks that I love for cheaper or with things that I already have in my closet. The websites Kendie Everyday and Js Everyday Fashion are great inspiration too. I’m more classic and not really into trends though. For accessories, I highly recommend the Jewel Box. They have one in Huntersville. Accessories can totally make or break an outfit! 🙂
marci says
I recommend a good pair of zippered leggings, black or gray. Or plain without zipper if you cant find them, but they are so cute. Skinny belts (JCrew), greys and dark purples, oversized sweaters with tank tops. Fall is my favorite season!
Melissa G says
1. Fun poofy vest for northerners & fitted blazer for southerners
2. Converse low top
3. Gray (top) with silver accessories.
4. H&M & Gap
Hmm…maybe I should listen to my own words & go shopping. I think YES!

I was always afraid of skinny jeans because I am short (just under 5’2) and have “child bearing hips’ (that’s what my husband calls my them, I haven’t had any babies yet though). My advice is to try a lot of different brands on. A lot of them made me look “frumpy”. It makes all the difference if you find a pair that actually fit and compliment your figure! Now I am obsessed with the skinny jeans/boots look. Pair that with a long sweater…super comfy!
Brittany says
I’m 5’1″ and have always been told I have ‘child bearing hips’, too. (I’m hoping they come in handy sometime this upcoming week!) What brand did you find that you finally really liked??
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
oooh, I love questions like these!
-a scarf. or a skinny belt.
-TOMS are so in right now.. I used to think of them as so fugly, but they come in SO many different colors, they’re comfy, and they go with shorts and jeans of all shapes and sizes. I’d go with TOMS or stylish flats. 😉
-ORANGE is a big color for this fall (womp womp for me.. I have never looked good in orange), but this is GREAT news for you! 🙂
I loove The Limited for work clothes, J Crew for both, and I frequent NY & Co., H&M, a lot these days too. Forever 21 will always be my go-to for cheapie going-out clothes, though!
Marlène says
I’m also 38 weeks pregnant, and not much of a fashionista either. I’ve been fighting the craziest urge to chuck ALL of my pre-pregnancy clothes away and start fresh once the baby is born.
However, I have a feeling that it’s some weird nesting thing, or I’m just more obsessed with fashion now that I can’t indulge in it (I’m not about to spend $$$ on lots of maternity stuff) and I may regret it if I actually go through with the purge.
So I’m going to patiently wait until after the baby is here and see not only what my new body shape will be, but also if my negative feelings towards my current wardrobe dissipate a bit, too!!
PS. Best of luck with Labour and Delivery. I wish you a wonderful experience!!
Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well says
I’m with you Brittany…solid color tops and my wedding rings for accessories 🙂
I used to shop at Gap Outlet (before they closed it down near me!) and I always ended up buying the same sweaters and turtlenecks in different colors. Same with pants- I have navy, gray and khaki corduroys for the winter.
I have a few random ‘trendy’ pieces, such as a cropped red coat for special occasions. I pick these things up at Old Navy when they are super on sale! Check out stores like Old Navy or Gap since they usually have the current trends and are normally cheap.
Good luck!
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
My main fall staple is a jacket, because you get SO much wear out of it! I’d pick a light one, like a blazer or something, that you can wear indoors or outdoors.
Also, I LOVE scarves! Not like the thick knit kind, but the kind you can wear inside. They’re so versatile and add an easy (and cheap) kick to any outfit!
Lauren says
I could have written this post. I have ZERO fashion sense. But I look forward to getting some advice from reading everyone else’s comments to you!

So much good advice here! Which is good because I have no fashion sense to share 😉
I just want to say your ring is GORGEOUS! Do you mind if I ask where it’s from? (I’m in the market — or I like to think I am .. HAHA!)
Brittany says
Oh, thanks so much! Hubbs did a great job and picked it out himself 🙂 He bought it from a local place, Diamonds Direct in South Park (Charlotte). They have great quality, prices and customer service. They even let me BORROW a pair of $7000 dollar earrings to wear at my wedding because we got all our rings from them. Amazing.
How exciting that you’re in the market!! 🙂
Caree @ Fit-Mama says
I wish I could help you too!! I love to dress cute but am always the last to know the “in” styles!! I like to dress for comfort but also look fashionable and sometimes it just takes too darn long for me to figure out what to buy or what looks best on me so that leads me to never shop for myself, ever.
Lauren @ HeyLo says
I say scarfs! You can wear a plain shirt and a scarf with a cardigan and look fabulous! With little to no effort of course. I always get compliments on my outfit just by adding a scarf, best part is it doesnt even really have to match 🙂

FIRST – everyone has the body type for skinny jeans!! seriously, depending what top you wear, they’re flattering on everyone. i have wider hips/thighs so I generally wear skinny jeans only with longer tops or tunics, but skinny jeans can be super flattering on any body type. also if you love boots (me too!), they’re the perfect jeans to wear with them – you can tuck them in and show the boot off even more. if you wear boots with boot-cut jeans or flares, you’re covering up the prettiest part!
but for boot-cut jeans, I think the cutest pair of shoes you could wear would be ballet flats. i prefer flats with a little bit of a pointy toe – they elongate your leg even more and they’re a little chicer but just as comfortable, I promise it doesn’t squish your toes! as for color, that depends – do you wear mostly cool colors? buy black. if you wear more warm colors, buy a brown – my favorite brown is a cognac which I think looks good with any color. for example: http://www.aldoshoes.com/us/women/shoes/flats/83009691-zain/28?utm_source=google+product&utm_medium=versafeed&utm_term=zain-83009894-28-7&utm_campaign=apparel+accessories+shoes+flats&utm_content=aldo+zain+flat+0+to+05+in+flats&v_traceback=c0819_2130_f0823_1445
one color that’s really “in” for fall is cobalt blue, which is really easy to find and wear in tops. i also think it looks good with almost anything – gold/browns or silver/blacks.
my favorite store is H&M because they have a really wide range of price points and items – really quality jackets and pants and then some more inexpensive but still nice sweaters and tops.
oops. once you get me started on fashion talk I don’t stop. but hopefully any of that helped!

I like brown ankle boots. brown because I wear a lot of that palette in the fall.
What color is in for fall and how is the best way to wear it?
In fall I love deep colors–deep orange, mustard, dark brown and for a lighter, i love cream. I wear a lot of solids because my work attire is business casual. If I have a solid top on, I like to accessorize with a beautiful scarf (printed) or a chunky necklace. I also love plaids in the fall.
What is your favorite store to shop at?
honestly, I only buy bargains. Marshalls, TJMax, Target, and when things go on sale, Urban Outfitters. The rest of my clothing I get at local shops.

I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a ‘fashionista’ but I do love fashion and shopping for cute clothes! I LOVE cardigans. I probably have about 10. I tend to stick to neutral and earthy colors so they can be matched with anything! Here are some cute ones from Old Navy:

I completely agree with everyone who has mentioned Ann Taylor Loft – pretty much my entire wardrobe is from there. I’m 5’2″ (on a good day) and love their petite line – also, love love their straight jeans . . . they’re not as tight as the skinny jeans, but still work. As for footwear, I have a pair of brown Bandolina tall boots with about a 1-1.5″ stacked heel. I’ve had them for about 4 years and have worn them out – definitely need to get a new pair this fall.
I would also recommend comfy cardigans over a tank top and fun scarves!

i think you can still wear skinny jeans! i was hesitant to buy a pair at first because i am very curvy, but i found a nice dark (stretchy) pair and i think they look ok? i love skinnies because they look good with boots and heels.

I actually think that skinny jeans look super cute on short girls-even with flats, but that’s just me. I think the first place to start is to get some great accessories! Forever 21 has an awesome and affordable selection- and I also recommend checking out the Anthropologie sale stuff. Their blouses are unique and always make you look cute and fashionable when mixed with less expensive things from Old Navy and H&M. (H&M is the best!)

I second the MK watch! My boyfriend bought me the one I had been drooling over for my birthday and I wear it every day. It is the oversized watch (it is actually unisex). I love big watches and this one is perfect!
PS- I live in Mooresville as well. Aren’t you glad Brawley is almost done?!? 🙂
Sierra @ Posh Meets Pavement says
I also stick with bootcut dark denim or black pants on the bottom with a heel or wedge to elongate the legs. That is a great “base” for so many options. I love collared buttons ups, tank tops with cardigans, or a plain tee with a colorful scarf.
Another must? Get a casual blazer. It will change your life and it will make anything look “smart” in a pinch. Navy or black. Really spent time finding a good fit. Make it more casual by rolling up the sleeves.
For a great shoe with a boot cut dark denim, try a camel colored round toe wedge or boot with a stacked heel. Invest in shoes, they house your feet, and your feet do so much for you on a daily basis.
Great stores for basics: J.Crew, Nordstroms, H&M, Zara, Express, NY & co.
Hollis says
The one staple item (besides a great pair of jeans) would be a comfy cardigan! They are so versatile. You can wear them casual or dress them up with a cute skinny belt. I love a deep purple in the fall. It looks good with silver or gold accessories. Believe it or not, Target is a great affordable place to buy basic clothing items! Mossimo makes the most comfortable tanks that I have one in every color. I would definitely recommend starting there. Hope you have fun shopping!
