Y’all know I love a good day in the life post. I revisit the archives every once in a while just to read through what life looked like during different phases. Will I continue adding 1/2 to the kids’ ages going forward? Maybe! Ha.
This is kind of a funky time for a day in the life post because it’s our last week of co-op and so we’re on a loose system. The girls are finishing up final projects and we won’t bring our morning time back until next week. So here’s a peek at an April day (don’t say don’t say it don’t say it) here at the homestead! Sorry, couldn’t help myself. 🙂
6:15 AM
My alarm goes off and I roll out of bed. We are still waiting on a replacement part for our coffee machine, so I put on some water for tea. I take Finley out briefly, pour my tea, light a candle, and set up in my cozy chair in the living room to blog while some morning storms roll in.
8:30 AM
Hailey is up and making breakfast so I go open Kaitlyn’s door to get her moving, too. Hailey has a morning routine of frying an egg and emptying the dishwasher while setting up a little table to eat at while watching World Watch. I watch with her while making breakfast for David and myself.
This morning we had scrambled eggs and egg whites with veggies, avocado toast on some fresh milled bread I bought from a friend, and strawberries. Per usual, we had our fiber on the side to wash down the cod liver oil, vitamin D, and quercetin (for the pollen).
Once we’ve all eaten, I clean up the kitchen, mentally go over what’s for dinner to make sure I have everything I need, and talk through the day with the girls so they each have a plan. Hailey does this well on her own, a classic first born daughter in many ways, and Kaitlyn benefits still from some guidance. She thrives with a written check list.

9:15 AM
While the girls dive into their respective tasks, I set myself back up on the computer to knock out some admin tasks that have been piling up. This includes addressing flagged emails, starting a resume for Hailey to track her 8th grade activities and accomplishments (something we’ll continue through high school), paying some bills, and organizing some details for an upcoming family trip.
10:15 AM
Workout time! David and I work out together most days, finding a time slot that works for us both while we eat breakfast. I fill up our shakers with creatine and pre-workout. We drink that, the refill with aminos and head to the gym for Madeline’s Upper Body Push.
See all our gym and fitness favs here.
On strength-focused training days we don’t get sweaty, so it makes it easy to continue with our days afterwards. David jumped right into math with Hailey. We have her on an accelerated program so she can have Algebra 1 done by the end of summer and do Geometry her freshmen year. I could write a whole separate blog post on the deep dive into college prep I’ve done over the past six months and how it’s helped shape our high school plan.
I knock out my five minute weekday make up routine (no make up make up is the star of that show) then go check on Kaitlyn’s room cleaning progress.

12:00 PM
Lunch time already! Kaitlyn and I do math together while I make lunch. Nicole the Math Lady does the teaching and I’m there as a TA.
Fresh milled bread has to be eaten quickly so I make grilled cheeses for the girls while I cook up some chicken to top mine and David’s salads. I found these new to me ranch flavored crispy pumpkin seeds and I really like them!
Our lunch: buffalo chicken salads with Mary’s Gone Crackers and cottage cheese as a dip. Why is no other cottage cheese as tasty at Good Culture’s? I keep trying to branch out but it’s just not the same.

12:30 PM
Hailey and I head out right after lunch. I drop her off at her piano and music theory lessons then rush to see how many errands I can accomplish in the hour. I make Amazon returns at Staples, buy some herbs at Lowe’s, return books to the library, while catching up with some friends on Marco Polo.
2:30 PM
Back at home, I help Hailey with her final research paper. It turns out MLA format is still as riveting as it was when I was a kid.
Pollen or hormones (two things I can blame almost anything on) hit me hard around 3:00 PM so I kicked my feet up on the couch to rest for a few. I called in the cuts of meat for the cow share we are getting next week and splitting with a friend.
4:15 PM
Finley was itching for some exercise, so David, Hailey, and I decided to take her for a walk. He recently pulled back out his weighted vest, so I decided to do the same. I can only imagine how cool we must look to the neighbors.

5:15 PM
We walked 2.5 miles. Back home, Hailey went to play some basketball and I talked David into helping me plant the herbs I picked up from Lowe’s. My vision is to have a variety of beneficial herbs grow along the chicken fence for them to snack on but not destroy. We’ve planted rosemary, lavender, and two types of oregano.
Then it was time to knock out my chicken chores. I like to go in once a day to bring them treats, clean up the run, inspect everything, and collect eggs.
The day prior I only collected two eggs, which was odd. Even stranger, when I opened it up this day, I only found one. We usually average 6-8 per day. I started to wonder if they were laying eggs out in the yard now that they could free range all day. However, then I noticed only eight chickens were out. Worried about the ninth, I opened the back of the coop to inspect and when I did, I found…
Ms. Wednesday… perhaps going broody?! Just LOOK at what she was sitting on…

All those eggs!! And that tiny one, too.
She was not thrilled with me when I moved her off so now I need to google what to do about a broody hen. I got a pretty good giggle out of the situation though.
5:45 PM
Back in the house, I went to shower, then headed to the kitchen to make dinner. I put the rice on to cook, chopped some veggies, and made taco meat to create everyone’s current favorite supper – taco bowls!
Nothing groundbreaking, I get it, but it’s become a weekly staple because every time I make it, everyone raves about how much they enjoy it. Proof that simple is often best. I always have tortillas because Kaitlyn sometimes prefers a wrap and I serve it with MASA chips because I’m obsessed. I just used my own code (AHEALTHYSLICE20) to order 10 more bags because with the code you can get a much better price online than what you can find at any store.

7:30 PM
Dinner is done and it’s wind down time. David helps me get the kitchen all cleaned up while the girls shower then we all hang out in the living room. We pass around the red light face mask (I was recently sent this red light face mask to try and we’re all using it to compare and contrast against the HigherDOSE red light face mask).
David and I sip our magnesium drinks and we all watch Mark Rober videos together to wind down the night. The video of him making the glitter bomb package to get people stealing packages off front porches was hilarious!
9:00 PM
The girls head to bed and I go out to lock up the chickens and let Finley out one last time. Then David and I watch our nightly episode of Frasier before calling it a night, sound asleep by 10:00.
And that’s a wrap! 🙂

Love reading your blogs! And yes, please write a blog post about homeschooling high school with all the details 😊 We are heading into 9th grade homeschooling in the Fall too, it’s so hard to find helpful information on homeschooling the high school years.
Brittany Dixon says
I’d love to hear your plan! I’ll definitely share ours soon, too. Can’t believe we are heading into the high school years!

Can you remind me what the magnesium drink is? What a great day! Thank you for sharing. P.S. Don’t ever discount what a blessing the extra sleep is for homeschoolers. My daughter has to leave so early for classes, and I think it’s such a gift your growing teens get some extra shut-eye!
Brittany Dixon says
Originally the magnesium drink was lime Spindrift, tart cherry juice, and magnesium. But nowadays I tend to just mix the magnesium with whatever Spindrift I have on hand in the fridge. Always delicious! 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Oh, and this is the magnesium we like best- https://go.shopmy.us/p-46379414 – Thorne 🙂

Love the day in the life posts! If you are willing, I would also love a detailed blog post about the research you put into deciding how to map out high school for the girls. Did you walk through it with them and solicit their input or did you make decisions based solely on research? I will be in your shoes in a few years with my oldest and it is the only part of homeschooling that feels a little daunting!
Brittany Dixon says
I’ll share about it, soon! But I have to admit that part of my research was falling into the college admissions rabbit hole on Tiktok. So fascinating to hear what colleges are looking for in kids!

What a lovely day! What does David do for work? You’re both home all day on a weekday? He works from home, I assume? He seems to have a LOT of flexibility/ doesn’t seem to have to work full time business hours and you guys seem to do so well financially… my boys are approaching college age and are seeking career ideas, maybe I need to recommend whatever David does?!? 😅 Would love to know if you can share! P.S. I looooove your house so much!
Brittany Dixon says
Thank you; I’ve loved putting our house together even though it’s very much still a work in progress 🙂
As for David, he does work from home! He was in medical sales and when we moved he transitioned into a district manager position, still within the spinal implant world. While he does work from home, he travels some, too, and is one of those guys almost always taking phone calls during our vacations ;)- a small price to pay for the at home time we get to have together though! He also runs our two rental properties and I run my blog (in terms of the extra income).
I’ve been trying to figure out how best to guide our kids for the future; with technology changing so rapidly, it’s tough to know for certain what jobs are going to look like even in just a few years! I’ve enjoyed following along with your college tour journey with Ethan!
