Snow days in South Carolina feel a little like borrowed magic. They’re rare enough that when they happen, everything slows down in a way that feels both exciting and deeply welcome.
The kids knew there was a chance for snow, so naturally we went all in on the superstitions the night before: white crayons on the windowsills, ice cubes in the toilets, running laps around the kitchen island asking for snow, and sleeping in pajamas turned inside out. Where did these superstitions come from? I honestly have no idea—but somehow, over the years, they’ve become the law in our home.
This one arrived gently (and on a Saturday, no less), with snow falling steadily all morning—thick, quiet flakes that softened everything they touched. The timing couldn’t have been better. As we sipped coffee and cooked breakfast, the snowfall really picked up. Watching the girls wander into the kitchen with messy bedhead was such a sweet moment—K bursting with pure, childlike excitement, and H delivering a deeply happy but still sleepy teenage, “It’s snowing!” announcement.
K wasted no time throwing on a few layers and mixing up a bubble concoction, determined to create a “frozen bubble.” It didn’t exactly work, but trying was half the fun and kept her happily occupied until the bacon and egg biscuits were ready.

Devour we did—then immediately suited up and headed out into the wintery wonderland. The snow didn’t let up, and neither did we. Snowball fights, checking on the chickens (who were absolutely not fans of the white stuff), and meeting up with neighbor friends at the sledding hill filled our morning and spilled well into the afternoon.
We finally came inside mid-afternoon to warm up and collapsed onto the couch for a movie break. Frozen 2 was the girls’ pick—very on theme. I may or may not have dozed off during it, but it was cozy all the same.

After waking up, I got to work on a pot of cabbage roll soup, which only added to the cozy atmosphere. Once we were warmed and refueled, we headed back out—this time to our neighborhood pavilion for round two of sledding. Even with a wood-burning fire going, the cold settled in quickly as the sun dipped low in the sky.
We tapped out in the early evening and invited some friends back to our house instead. Sitting by the indoor fire felt much more appealing. The kids watched a movie, the adults chatted, and the evening passed quickly in that easy, content way that only happens on days like this.

By Sunday, the sun was out, but temperatures stayed cold enough for another full day of snow fun. We made what might be the world’s tiniest snowman, squeezed in more sledding, and watched as the roads slowly melted and dried.
All in all, it was the most perfect snow day. We ended up with about three to five inches of beautiful, soft powder. It landed on a weekend and was gone by Monday morning. I’m not sure how the South managed to order that up so perfectly, but after a few winters of nothing more than flurries, we’re incredibly grateful we got to soak it all in.

Have you had any snow where you live this winter, or are you still waiting on your turn?
