I wear yoga pants more often than I should admit to. How cliché, right? But seriously, I will often go from sun up to sun down in workout gear, then switch into my pajamas. I blame it on my unruly, thick hair. Huh? Well, I guess I feel that unless I’m going to do something decent with my hair, why even try with clothes and make-up?
I know, I know. David is a lucky man.
Half a whole wheat bagel, onion and chive cream cheese, avocado slices and one egg. Tea on the side.
Well yesterday I desperately needed a haircut. Since I knew this meant skipping a morning workout, I actually put on jeans, boots and a little make up. Even with the rat nest on my head, I felt pretty good about myself.
I had to try a new salon and it was an incredible experience. A long scalp massage, warm towels for my hands and an aroma-therapy treatment (3 sniffs of an oil??) made me feel ultra-pampered. I marveled at Elysa’s ability to tame my mane.
I walked out of there feeling more put together than I have in months. From there on, everything about the day just went right. I’ll fully admit that your super sweet comments on instagram and twitter helped to inflate my head a bit. Thanks for that.
Once home, I decided to whip up a special lunch.
Grilled portobello mushroom sandwich with tomato, onion, spinach and herbed goat cheese. Spinach and romaine salad on the side.
A kick-@$$ lunch AND kick-@$$ hair?! What a day!
Then things just kept rolling.
Toasted pumpkin bread with butter and toasted pumpkin seeds.
…Another slice was consumed with peanut butter.
Nap time allowed me enough time to nail the creation of a delicious pumpkin pie spiced pumpkin seeds recipe.
Then Hailey woke up in the silliest of moods. Our afternoon at Barnes and Noble was full of giggles, book reading and lego-building… and post-nap hair that I didn’t fix. I guess I wanted my hair to keep the spotlight and I just can’t compete with toddler cuteness.
Even the sky seemed to show off its skills yesterday.
Or maybe with my new ‘do, I was just seeing sunshine everywhere I went.
My friend, Jeff, sent over some fresh goodies from his farm, which sealed the deal that yesterday was pretty much the best day ever.
PS- Please notice the single asparagus stalk. He said it was all that grew. Haha.
Hailey stayed in great mood until bedtime, then I made dinner for David and me.
Lemony Tomato Herb Scallops with sour dough and a simple side salad.
(to finish up this WIAW)
I finally changed into pajamas, but the good feeling remained. As I kicked my feet up on the couch I wondered what it is about good hair that can seriously make a day so sweet.
Do people with naturally gorgeous hair feel fantastic at all times?
Does this mean I need to suck it up and learn how to really blow dry my hair without relying on a straightener?
…am I really willing to set aside an hour of my day to get the hair results I want?
No, probably not. But it was a good reminder that a little bit of effort in appearance can make a big difference in my psyche.
What do you think?
Is there truly magic in the power of a good hair day?
What can make you feel just a little bit better about yourself?
Lee says
this sounds silly, but I always feel much better about myself when my eyebrows are groomed.
Madeline @ Food Fitness and Family says
I feel the same way when I get pampered. I feel like it’s particularly true for SAHMs since we don’t have work as an excuse to pull ourselves together. I just live in my gym clothes haha.

Love the haircut! 🙂

My hair has always been my favorite feature of mine. It is straight as can be, shiny, never colored and always lays in the perfect position with zero effort. HOWEVER, I can assure you, that it rarely gets it’s time in the spotlight. I have 2 kids 21 months apart and I spend 95% of my time in yoga pants and a ponytail…even though it would require zero time to do. Something about having my hair yanked on all day and getting yogurt, cheese, fruit and snot run through it just isn’t worth it. Don’t feel bad, I think it’s a mom thing? 😀

If only all clothes were as comfy as work out clothes, maybe we would dress up for our hubbies more often:)
A good work out makes me feel better about myself every time.
Love the new hair!

i’m always in the best mood when i get my haircut..mainly because my hair never looks as good as it does after I get a haircut..i’m drooling over that slice of pumpkin loaf..i bet with peanut butter it was amazing! love the haircut btw!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
You had some seriously good eats! I love that you topped your pumpkin bread with roasted pumpkin seeds…that salty/sweet combo sounds perfect!
And a scalp massage while getting your haircut? I am jealous!!! That had to have been amazing.
Marjorie says
LOVE the hair! I know what you mean – a good hair day can make you feel so good. Mine are few and far between, unfortunately. And I do feel obligated to dress nice for the salon too. Funny! I think it’s because the “hair ladies” always dress so beautifully, with awesome hair (of course), makeup, accessories.
Parita @ myinnershakti says
I got my haircut this past weekend, and even though it was just a trim, my stylist set and dried it perfect. I walked out feeling like a million bucks! So yes, I do believe in the power of a good haircut.
Lindsey says
I have thick wavy hair and blow dry and straighten it every other day. I am not sure I would feel human without doing so. However, I am about to have a baby so those days might be gone for awhile 😉
I wish I could just blow dry my hair and not straighten it but it’d be a frizzy mess! lol.
I agree that a good hair day is purely magic. I am always jealous of people that always have nice, done hair. However, I am usually not into spending anytime on my hair so it gets put up in a ponytail.
New hair, spa appts and a new outfit all make me feel better about myself 🙂
christina says
Your hair looks great!! I feel so much better after a good trim & highlights!
Swiftie22 says
My hair is REALLY unpredictable, sometimes it’s wavy, some days it gets incredibly frizzy, and other days it looks like a pine tree. :/ But when there’s a day it gets wavy and not-frizzy, I notice I start to act differently, like, more confident. And it really makes me feel “prettier”.
By the way, I’m only 13. 🙂
Katie says
LOVE the new hair cut! Need to get one myself!
Heather says
I love getting my hair cut – it always makes me feel good and gives me a much needed confidence boost. When I start feeling “meh” about the way I look, I know it’s time to book another appointment. 😉
Mike @ Midwestern Bite says
I get my hair cut about every five months, whether it needs it or not.
Guessing that’s a long time for a dude. Especially one who commutes by motorcycle 99% of the time and still wants to look somewhat professional.
Maria says
I somehow missed your haircut IG yesterday! So cute!
Yup. Getting a haircut. Wearing a new shirt or pants. New shoes. It all sounds so superficial, but it really brightens my day. Most importantly though, it boosts my confidence. When I feel crappy about my hair, I feel sort of down on myself. So I try to make an effort and wear my hair down more often and I put together a photo album of my favorite outfits for work, so I just pick one each day without having to think about it too much.
Brittany says
Oh yes good hair = good mood! Your not alone… the one or two times a week that I do pull my self together and fix my hair I feel sooo good all day! today is one of those days :). Oh and if I could achieve getting my eyebrows waxed….It would be a double whammy of a good day… maybe today!!
Paulina says
I just texted my stylist 🙂 I’m overdue for a trim and I agree that a good hair day = a great mood. Same goes for anytime I feel more put together than usual. And, no shame in living in sweats and yoga pants. As soon as I get home from work, I take off my bra and put on comfier clothes.
andie says
this is a big reason why I make it a point to get my hair cut every 6-8 weeks and I try to wear makeup every day, because it makes me feel better about myself and improves my day!!
Great meals! Do you have a pumpkin bread recipe?
\
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Amen sister. I’m right there with you on the hair thing. All is right in the world when I have a good hair day. Or even better, get my hair done by someone else. 😉 I also feel extra great and confident when I have on a cute new outfit and get a great night of sleep!
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Your hair is stunning ! Totally caught my eye on Jenn’s page!

A good hair day makes all the difference! Yours looked great yesterday!

I’m not a mom, but I work with my parents in an office where I don’t deal with people outside of my family. I generally don’t blow dry or straighten my hair or even put on makeup unless I know I’m going to be socializing with people that aren’t related to me.
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
Your hair looks ah-maze-ing, girl! 🙂 I love it!
Emily S says
your hair looks awesome! and I fully agree – I got my hair cut at Modern Salon a few weeks ago and it was so restorative.
BTW if I ever win the lottery the first thing I will do is hire someone to be my personal stylist and do my hair every day for me. No bad hair days ever again! 😉
Ellen says
Your first paragraph is my life. Yoga pants, comfy workout shirt, cozy socks…crazy toddler bouncing around all day. I absolutely feel more “with-it” when I do my hair, put on makeup, etc…but rarely do during the week.
That said, when I DO get my hair done I always try to find an Aveda salon. The tea, essential oils and head massages always make me feel completely relaxed.
Ali says
I love days like that!! Haircuts solve lots of problems and always make me feel better too. I’m with you on the yoga pants. I haven’t worn anything else this week. Oops.
Dominique @ That's What Domi Said says
Good hair is a cure all. I feel totally fine going out with no make-up and gym clothes as long as my hair looks bangin’ (and if it’s wild and wavy and still looks good, all the better!)…but if the hair ain’t working, you can bet I’ll be putting on a bit of extra eyeliner.
Also, gym clothes are totally acceptable if they include badonkadonk-flattering spandex! 😉
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
Haha I wear workout clothes way too often as well!
John J. says
Definitely “good hair”! Looking forward to seeing it in person tomorrow. Anxious to see y’all. Safe trip.
Kris says
Consider yourself lucky — I have baby fine, frizzy, unmanageable hair, and I make it worse with biking and Spin workouts. I don’t think my hair ever looks good for more than a couple of hours. After that it goes straight into a ponytail.
Erin @ The Grass Skirt says
I love the way your hair looks! I always feel so much better after a visit to the salon. It is pretty much the only time I am every apart from my son!
Carol says
There is no way I could do my hair and prepare the meals you do, much less raise a 2 yr old!
When do you grocery shop? It takes time & planning to get all those products in the house.
I’m lucky to get 2 good dinners a week prepared, rest of the time salads or leftovers!
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
Your hair looks fabulous!! And your eats look so delicious as usual. I need to make a sandwich like that!
One thing that makes me feel just a little better about myself definitely includes a haircut, as well as struttin’ a new outfit that I love. 🙂
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
I have a hair apt. tomorrow and now I am even more excited! Yes, getting pampered definitely puts me in a better mood. I think that’s why people say we should do it more often right. But there’s that whole having kid to chase around all day and the single income thing that gets in the way…
Erin says
I, too am in desperate need of learning to blow dry my hair the “proper” way as I damaged part of my hair from straightening it too much. So if you find a great way to do it, please help! 😉
bonnie says
I think your new “do” is great !! The shape fits you perfectly & love the highlights !!
I have been coloring my hair for many years.. Im a redhead instead of light brown with red highlights which is my natural color. Although its been soooo long Im not even sure what my natural is (definitely not grey thank goodness)!!. Being red totally fits my coloring (god made slight error in judgement lol)
I started straightening with (Keritan Coppola) it about 2 years and havent looked back since. Was tired fighting with my unruly & frizzy hair. Expensive but so worth it !!!
I still have to blow dry but takes less time & lot less frustration!
My stylist showed me a few tricks to get some bounce & movement such as using a big round brush & blow dry the roots using the “shot of cool air “button… it totally makes a difference !!
Ask your stylist for some how to do tricks…most will gladly share info.
Andrea says
I am completely hooked on Athleta clothes which means my yoga clothes are cuter than my regular clothes. My husband should be so lucky to have me wear them around all the time! And my hair is weird…not straight, but not wavy either…the bottom layers want to be wavy and the top want to be straight. So unless I purposely blow it straight or curl it, it looks like a hot mess. And because I work from home, it NEVER gets done. But on the rare occassion it does? I feel like a million bucks! So yes…there is definite power to a good hair day.
Manuel says
A motivating discussion is definitely worth comment. I do believe that you
should write more on this subject, it may not be a taboo subject but generally folks don’t discuss such subjects.
To the next! Cheers!!
