Wow, what a week! It’s been full and fun, but I am pretty tired and my kitchen looks like this:
It’s funny that in real life this messy scene drives me absolutely crazy! However, looking at in in a picture makes me smile. It completely reflects this creative and full phase of life, right down to the overflowing trashcan.
My mom came in town for a quick visit this week, which was ideal timing as I really needed helping hands as I bounced between a few meetings and kid commitments. I’m checking out a lot of school open houses in our area. I find it fascinating to hear how many different options there are and how passionate people are about different styles of learning. We live in a pretty cool spot to have so many options. At the moment we still are leaning towards starting with homeschool, but I want to ensure I’m making a completely informed decision.
I loved having mom here and we prioritized carving out an hour to chit chat over a pedicure.
The color I chose was missing its sticker. I liked it so much it would be one I would buy, but I’m terrible at the guessing game. Any guesses as to what this color is?
Apparently Kaitlyn was feeling left out and decided to give herself a green marker pedicure yesterday.
I couldn’t stop laughing until I also saw the “map” she drew all over our new rug. Luckily between the fact it was washable marker and a hand-me-down rug from a friend, the crisis was averted. But that will teach me to get too sucked into my kitchen projects, like organizing the pantry, while my mischievous two year old runs amuck.
Dried beans and grains are so pretty aren’t they? Every time I see red lentils I think of this soup, so now it’s on my short list to make again. I made my first soup of the season yesterday while it was 85 degrees because today’s high is only supposed to be 68 and I wanted to be ready.
Ready I am!
I didn’t follow any recipe because I love making my own soups by just throwing things in. Following these 5 simple secrets to homemade soup usually ensures it’s delicious no matter the combo.
This weekend should be a fun one and includes a trip to the Hot Air Balloon Festival and family pictures. I’m so ready to have the family pictures behind me because I can’t stress one more minute over what we all should wear. I’ve combed over our outfits a million times and have no idea why I find this so stressful. First world problems at their finest I suppose. This post on how to make the most of your family photos though helped though and am committed to chilling out and laughing with whatever happens.
But first, one last question– I’m wearing this dress and want to add a shawl/wrap/scarf to it- any suggestions on how to make it feel more fallish?!
Ok, let’s cut the rambling short and let me share a few good links I’ve found lately…

Since I’m fairly nosy and like to see how people grocery shop and eat, I enjoyed reading Molly’s post on the foods she buys and eats on the regular.

Kaitlyn’s pedicure made me laugh! Like your dress–what color do you have? Have a fun weekend and I’m sure whatever you choose for the family pictures will be perfect!

Morning. I love reading your blog and am a first time commenter. While I am definitely no ‘fashionista’, you did ask for advice on making your pretty dress look more fall-ish… Do you have a burgundy scarf? What about the tried-and-true flannel fabric? Or maybe a fall colored jacket? I’m sure whatever you pick out will look great and your family pictures will be beautiful!
Brittany Dixon says
Hi Rachel- thanks for reading and weighing in! 🙂 I love burgundy but it doesn’t go with the rest of the fam’s outfits, but I do have a flannel scarf that may work- I’m going to pull it out and try it! Thank you!

K’s pedi! HAHA!!! I love it.
With a dress like that, I would probably wear the scarf like a shawl (draped around my arms). But I’m no fashion expert.

What glass containers do you use to organize your pantry? Ours is out of control with rolled down bags held closed with rubber bands and chip clips and a recent issue with weevils invading some bulk rice was the last straw! I want to invest in glass containers but ones that have a tight seal and are not a hassle to open and close. Would love your recommendations (or what to avoid) based on what you’ve used!
Brittany Dixon says
I have some plastic ones (that the rubber seal is starting to fall off of) so right now it’s a lot of mason jars! I need to look for larger sizes because I love the look but need them to be bigger.

Love the dress! You could wear a scarf like this with the dress, http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/treasurebond-stripe-blanket-wrap/4352660?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort&fashioncolor=BLUE%20COMBO. Either just drape it over your shoulders or wrap it like its shown in the photo. I like the blue combo and the burgundy combo. Have a fun photo shoot!

How about a denim jacket?

Love that idea!! Pulling mine out of the closet now- thank you!

That’s what I ended up going with- thank you!!

Omg that green pedicure! haha She got creative! 😀
Lisa says
The first thing I thought when I saw her pedicure was – she colored inside the lines (of her toes)!! Good job little lady! Things that make sure proud…

The color you have is called Miami beet!! I just picked it up a few weeks ago-or at least it is ridiculously similar!
Brittany Dixon says
Oh thank you!! I’m going to look that up now 🙂
Lindsay says
I don’t think that is the correct color…that one is too maroonish. I think it is “Just lanai-ing Around”. It looks exactly like a color I got on my toes, which is my favorite. It looks spot on for what you picked.

I love the links you shared! I really needed the SAHM one. Also the pedicures look so fun! Such sweet memories!
