I noticed recently that I had been overdoing it on bread. I don’t subscribe to any one particular way of eating, but I do know that less processed carbs (bread, pasta, etc) makes my body feel more energetic/less bloated. Having bread for breakfast, lunch and as a side for dinner was getting a bit excessive (I blame you delicious sourdough). So I’ve cut back a little this week and have been enjoying some new twists on meals.
I subbed out sourdough and replaced it with this sweet potato breakfast hash. It’s so dang good that I’m committing to roasting extra sweet potatoes for the next morning every time I make them for Hailey’s dinner.
This play on burgers and fries is kicked up a notch by adding guacamole for dipping and sprinkling the roasted chips with pink Himalayan salt (my new obsession- you can taste a difference).
Then there were these…
I wasn’t going to bake cookies, but I was watching a friend’s (adorable) little boy yesterday morning and when it’s rainy, we bake!
They are low-sugar and use dark chocolate and though the kids loved them, I think the recipe needs some tweaking.
I’m pretty proud of the above creation. Sure I might turn into a sweet potato, but roasting thick cut rounds until crispy proved to be an excellent substitute for buns with these pulled pork BBQ sliders. I used a vinegar-based sauce to cut back on sugar and a thick pickle because, well, YUM.
Then there are a few things I’ve seen recently that are now on my list to make…
First up, this crockpot applesauce. I can only imagine how delicious the house would smell!
This slow cooker tikka masala (I’m back on a slow cooker kick!)
And this.
I adore Cassie’s Beerthday Cake and will have to try this for David’s big day. I’m not super crafty, but man, that’s awesome.
And as always, thanks Jenn for hosting WIAW!
Do you go on kicks where you cut back on certain foods to feel better?
Have you eaten anything particularly delicious lately?
Alex says
All of your meals look delicious, particularly that sweet potato hash. The pulled pork sliders with sweet potato “buns” is so unique. I am definitely going to give this a try! My favorite new dish has been this baked oatmeal. It is so easy to make on a Sunday morning, and then you just scoop a bit out for breakfast during the week.http://www.produceonparade.com/produce-on-parade/blueberry-maple-baked-oatmeal?q=Baked

Holy smokes, I clicked over and WOW that looks delicious!
Lindsey @SimplyLindsey says
I definitely go on kicks where I take a break from certain foods, especially dairy and gluten. I feel best when I don’t eat those foods, but love them!!
Swiftie22 (Andrea) says
Everything looks delicious! By the way, you say that the cookie recipe needs some tweaking, but is there a chance that you could share the link? I’m all in when it comes to low-sugar baked goods! 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
It really wasn’t that great- tasted very floury and not sweet enough. I used butter, brown sugar, an egg, vanilla, salt, whole wheat white flour and dark chocolate but didn’t write down the exact amounts. If I find a good version of a low-sugar baked good I will certainly share!
Marnie @ SuperSmartMama says
I’m the same way: if I eat too much bread/pasta/crackers, I feel awful. I eat Paleo about 80% of the time, but that still leaves alot of room to eat bread or pasta if I want some, but I try to avoid it most of the time. I’m ok with dairy in small amounts, too.
I need to get on the sweet potato band wagon again. It’s been too long!
Brittany Dixon says
That’s how I describe my ideal way of eating too! I can’t do anything 100% or it feels too restrictive, but I do feel better when I keep it cleaner 🙂
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Ooooo, yay! Hope you try the applesauce! 🙂 And, umm, all of your food is leaving me huuuuungry 🙂
Laura @FitMamaLove says
Love the idea of doing sweet potato “buns!” I can get carried away with bread too and will sometimes do sweet potato hash just because that’s a healthier option. It definitely takes more time, though. I try not to have bread at both lunch and breakfast. I’ll try to do at least a corn tortilla at one so I’m changing up the grain.
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
I’m not eating grains, legumes, sugar, or dairy for 30 days to see how it makes me feel. I’m on day 10 and I feel great! I haven’t felt bloated once. I know it isn’t a sustainable diet for me, but I’m interested in feeling any changes in my body. I definitely have! Even when I’m done I’m going to try hard to cut out grain completely (well, unless it’s someone’s bday and we’re celebrating!). I’ve read that whole grains make it hard for our guts to absorb minerals. I’m low on iron so I’m hoping this will help my absorption of iron. It’s always fun to try new things, I think. Your eats look delicious!
Brittany Dixon says
Yes I’ve loved following your experiment 🙂 What about beer? What are your thoughts on that as it relates to grain?
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
I really don’t know enough about beer and grain. To make beer you steep water in the grain and make a tea, ya know? So, it’s not really eating grain. I definitely know that beer bloats me more than say, wine. 🙂 I love both, but when I’m done I think I’ll be sticking to wine mostly.

I cut down on processed carbs, especially wheat, every so often and it definitely helps me feel better. Even A year or so ago I did a paleo challenge for a couple weeks – nope, couldn’t make it 30 days, I hate rules!! – but I haven’t returned to eating as much dairy as I used to.
That applesauce is on my must make list too!
I made up a butternut squash soup to have for lunches this week, 100% whole wheat pizza dough for pizza last weekend and Sheppard’s pie with sweet potatoes to have on hand for my 15 month old’s dinners. Last night hubby made his American Chop Suey, which I had with a bunch of spinach stirred in. Any meal hubby wants to cook is perfect 🙂
lauren says
Wow. My brain today.
Brittany Dixon says
I hate rules too! Haha. And yes, anything the husband wants to cook is a-ok in my book!!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I can easily overdo it on the processed carbs at times too! It’s something I have to recheck every once in awhile to see how I’m doing with it. I just love allll the carbs! 😉 Your sweet potato BBQ chicken sliders sound amazing! Love that idea.
Lauren @ The Foodie Runner says
I went through a sourdough kick last year! It is just soooo darn good!
And now I need to make chocolate chip cookies because that picture is making my mouth water!!!
Fran@BCDC says
Breakfast looks DELICIOUS!!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
That “Beerthday Cake” is awesome!! I might have to keep that one in mind for my boyfriend. He would LOVE it! Also… I have a huge craving for homemade potato chips now… I wonder why? 😉
Rachel says
I eat paleo 80% of the time, but there are times that I definitely overdo the cheating. (I’m looking at you ice cream.) I definitely kick up the paleo to 90-100% during times that I’m not feeling my best. Sugar is my number 1 thing to cut out and I feel a million times better within 24 hours.
I’m on a hash kick right now as well. Mine is plantains, apples, bacon, onions, and cinnamon. Cook the bacon pieces first and then add the rest, and it will cook in the grease. It’s SO delicious with eggs. Hash tip.. make a lot at one time, and then reheat portions throughout the week 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Oh my, your hash recipe sounds incredible!! Love the idea of making a big batch and once too!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
LOVE the idea of using sweet potatoes as “buns.” Genius!
I am looking forward to making butternut squash and Gruyere mac n’ cheese on Friday!
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
Ohhhh I love the idea of using sweet potato as a “bun” for sliders! I think I might try that with a veggie burger patty 🙂 I’m definitely in the same boat-sometimes I find myself eating a whole lot of carbs!
Carrie (This Fit Chick) says
I LOVE that burger mash up meal! How clever! And currently Ive been loving Perky Jerky!
Nicole @ Broken Road Creative says
I’ve been eating up sweet potatoes a lot lately too! I’ve always enjoyed them but it’s like I can’t get enough of them lately and I eat them as fries, chips, and baked. Now I want to try them with breakfast, lol!
Matt @ Runner Savvy says
Love the sliders idea!
Brittany from CountingMyCupcakes says
I’ve been having various versions of sweet potato hash topped with a fried egg a lot recently too. It’s soo good and easily can adaptable to whatever veggies I have on hand. As much as I looveee bread, sweet potato is such a great alternative and usually leaves me equally happy 🙂
sarah (SHU) says
DOWN WITH GRAINS! just kidding. although unlike you i am finding that i actually LIKE having ‘rules’ (as long as i know that i can consciously choose to break them once in a while!). it is nice to just go on autopilot and not be thinking ‘should i have this or that?’ unless it’s a special occasion, and i definitely feel better following my version of paleo guidelines (which includes red wine and dark chocolate 🙂 ).
that hash looks absolutely great. i think i might try to recreate a version of it in the AM with sweet potato leftovers!
Amy says
I love the sweet potato slider idea! Looks like a great flavor combination! I’m trying to cut back on dairy to see if helps with hormonal breakouts – so far I think it does but I miss cheeeese!
rachel says
can’t believe those cookies are low in sugar! they look scrumptious!
