This weekend was exactly what I hoped it would be- low key. Hailey and I cheered David on at his Friday evening soccer game.
And that was probably the wildest thing we did all weekend. Saturday filled up with biking around to garage sales and friends’ houses. I love seeing other people’s stuff. I got a giggle out of this and wondered how many other unused kits are out there…
We played outside and dabbled in some home projects.
3 homebrews on tap- coming soon to a garage near you! Well, near me, I guess. After a while we decided we just needed to relax. So with margaritas in hand, we did.
The weather was 75 and sunny. We all soaked in the fact that it is finally boating weather!
She was happier than her expression conveys.
Saturday night meant grilling.
And couch snoozing by 9:30.
This weekend was perfect because things are about to get a little crazy this week. So crazy in fact, that I only have one real dinner planned. This made for some unusual grocery shopping on Sunday.
I picked up some snacks and staples to have around for the week and quickly realized that there are at least 5 items I buy every single week at the grocery store regardless of what the week’s schedule looks like.
First up- bananas.
For Hailey, for me, for smoothies, for baking- we fly through bananas around here.
Also, greens.
I switch between baby spinach, kale, arugula and mixed greens, but I always buy a green for the week to wilt, eat as salad or to throw into omelets.
Then there is hummus. Sabra, to be exact.
It’s an item I hate to love. This little container costs $5. That’s expensive! I sometimes make homemade hummus or buy less expensive brands, but I always come back to Sabra because it’s just better than the rest. If someone can lead me to a recipe that ends up tasting like this, I’ll love you forever.
Yogurt.
Cabot strawberry is wonderful for frozen Greek yogurt drops, Hailey loves the Chobani Champions as part of her lunches and I accidentally picked up this Stonyfield regular yogurt and am glad I did; it’s delicious!
And always, a Hailey snack.
Sometimes it’s Annie’s cheddar bunnies, sometimes it’s toasted O’s. This week it’s multigrain squares. As long as they fit in her snack cup, I keep trying different snacks.
And as a bonus, lately I can’t help but splurge on these Seagram’s Seltzer Waters.
I’m usually a La Croix girl, but these are less expensive at my Harris Teeter. I have to limit myself to one a day to make the 12 pack last, but they are just so darn refreshing!
What is one item you buy every single week at the grocery?
Karen says
So glad you had a nice and relaxing weekend. The dinner looked amazing. We always get the following: bananas, strawberries (K’s favorite) and yogurt plus some greens for salads & smoothies. Have a great week.
Taylor says
Your dinner looks great, grilling is the best during those warmer days! My top 5 staples are bananas, apples, yogurt, greens, and trail mix
Elizabeth @ My Neon Running Shoes says
What a great weekend! Those look like our staples as well plus milk 🙂
Brittany says
Ah, yes, milk is a staple for us, too!
Lee says
Mine are pretty similar – greens, bananas, salsa, usually hummus, some sort of bread product, yogurt and usually some sort of ice cream or dessert. I just can’t quit my low-fat processed ice cream treats!
Avery @ SBLW says
MMm..I’m with you on the hummus. Sabra is fantastic!
Erica says
This is so funny – I was just thinking about how I could live off of 3 food items I eat daily (some multiple times a day!): Oatmeal, apples and peanut butter (PB2 now)
Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength says
Can not wait for grilled corn on the cob and boating!!! So jealous. It’s 30 degrees out right now. haha
I buy excessive amounts of almond milk and bananas. Whole milk and yogurt for the kiddo and tons of greens. Oh …and avocados. Lots of them. 🙂
Hanna says
We buy milk, eggs, yogurt, bread, and salad greens. 🙂
Lindsey @ Pas de Deux says
Bananas, greens, and yogurt are probably my top 3 purchases, too! If you like seltzer water, you should consider investing in a Soda Stream to be able to make your own at home. The cartridges are only $15 and last for a few months. It’s super easy to use, too!
Brittany says
I’ve seen the Soda stream! I’ve wanted one for a while, but they always seem so expensive. Of course, so is buying 12 packs of seltzer every week. I’m going to look into it again. Thanks 🙂
Susan @ Real Life Travels says
Bananas, Cereal / Snacks, Milk, Spinach, Humus and eggs. Each and every time. 🙂
Anne Kendall says
Every single week, I buy bananas (so green they practically crunch!), Chobani, cucumber, cherry/grape tomatoes, baby spinach, and some type of water — right now I’m on a Cascade Ice organic sparkling water kick.
Brittany says
Ohhh I haven’t heard of Cascade Ice, but it sounds so fancy! I’ll keep an eye out for it!
Ashley says
Ha- I have the same regular items – with the exception of the toddler snack! Costco has Sabra hummus for $5.99 for a 32oz container — am much better deal!
Brittany says
Another reason for me to cry about not having a costco…
Erin says
It looks like we have a lot of the same grocery staples! Have you tried the Garden of Eatin’ brand hummus? It’s usually only $1.99 on sale at Kroger here in town, has less ingredients than Sabra and is super yummy (well, it doesn’t have the mix-ins in the middle, but it’s still good!).
Brittany says
No, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that brand, but will keep an eye out for it now! $2 is much more reasonable. I’ll add my own mixins if need be 🙂
Erin says
I was just snacking on some and noticed it’s Fountain of Health…not Garden of Eatin’. (Those are the brand of chips we like, though!) 🙂
Kourtney says
Have you checked Target for Sabra hummus? Ours just remodeled to expand their grocery selection and now carries it. It’s only $2.99. I am in Michigan though.
Brittany says
I have and sometimes they have kinds I like, but other times their family size tubs are odd flavors, like from-the-garden? It’s Sabra, but I don’t like it as much. But thanks for the reminder to keep checking it out! 🙂
Sonya says
Great post! I love knowing what others staples are. I would say I typically always buy bread & some kind of lunch meat.
christina says
hummus! of course! i haven’t had the key lime waters…must try!
Jen says
Bananas, greens, and hummus are always on our list, too.
But the real question is, how do you get H to keep her lifejacket on? W has a fit!
Brittany says
I think she has just accepted it. She fusses when we first put it on, but she isn’t allowed on the dock or near the water without it. I’m just too nervous!
Kelli H says
I always buy; bananas, broccoli, onions & garlic, beans, bell peppers, and eggs. Those don’t usually change.
Sarah@ making thyme for health says
Low key weekends are the best! I always buy 14 yogurts(!), food for life English muffins, 3 things of salad, and 14 apples/pears. 🙂
Kari says
We always buy bananas too.
Marie says
Can you please share the brand/style life jacket you have for Hailey? We need a new one for this summer (boating season has yet to arrive in Wisconsin…booo!). Thank you!
Brittany says
It’s by Speedo, though we have several. The Speedo is our favorite. It’s stored on the (covered) boat though, so I’ll have to check exact specifications next time we go out.
My Grandma lives in Green Bay and we used to go pontooning on the Fox River every summer. Good times 🙂
Paulina says
FYI you can find a giant container of Sabra hummus at Costco for $5.99. I wanna say 48 oz? It’s like 5 of the regular size tubs for the price of one. I admit to making a trip to Costco just for hummus because it’s so expensive everywhere else.
Brittany says
Do you know how sad this makes me that we don’t have a Costco nearby :/
Jane says
I buy my hummus from Costco as well. I also get the gigantic tub of salad greens, cases of Chobani, banannas, and cherry tomatoes!!! We are from the same area (Cornelius / Lake Norman). You can hit up Costco when you go to Southpark & Whole foods. I really think its worth the trip.
Brittany says
Hi neighbor 🙂 I’ll have to look into that! I only make it down to Whole Foods on occasion, but maybe the Costco would be worth it. Thanks for the info!
char eats greens says
Ya, you really can’t beat Sabra hummus…I’ve tried as well, but you always come back to it lol. We’re huge banana eaters over here as well. My husband miiiiiight be turning into a monkey pretty soon!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Hard to pick just one! Almond milk, spinach and bananas are a MUST! Glad y’all had a good weekend. 🙂
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles says
In terms of fruit/produce, my college dining hall is decent for most of it. But I always have my own stash of greek, some kind of alternate milk (almond or coconut, depending on how I’m feeling!), and frozen fruit for smoothies.
Daniella says
I always wanted to make my own hummus and used this as my first recipe: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Real-Hummus/Detail.aspx. It’s a great basic recipe and I thought it came out very good and very easy to add to! I would definitely recommend giving it a try…so easy.
Our staples: fruit and veggies are our weekly staples. I love the idea of changing up the snacks for your toddler. I have a 4 year old and an almost 17 month old. I’m going to surprise them with some new options. Hmmm…maybe a post on your favorite kid-approved snacks? (Sorry if you did that already, just started following you a little while ago.)
Maria says
Haha. I had to laugh at the P90x box at the yardsale. I have an unopened Insanity box sitting on my living room, collecting dust. It was the company gift from my previous company and I cannot do plyo moves because of my knees (I know, excuses). Also, those workouts are crazy!
I always buy: milk, spinach, Fage and Chobani greek yogurt, eggs and cucumbers.
lauren says
I’ve heard that if you peel the chickpeas, it turns out more like Sabra…I did that exactly once 🙂
I had another brand a few months ago, pretty sure it was Cedar’s, and it was really good. Now if only I could remember the flavor!
We tend to get the same things every week, yogurt (wallaby for the hubs, greek for me), fruit, and salad fixings.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
I always buy carrots, mushrooms, and lettuce. The other veggies tend to vary based on what is on sale, although I do love cucumbers and celery, so they tend to find their way in my basket. I have to have yogurt on hand, and hummus, but I tend to buy the giant-sized Tuscan Sabra from Costco which lasts single-ol’ me quite a while…so I don’t have to buy one every week. I stock up on yogurt–Trader Joe’s Greek or goat’s milk, or Chobani if it is on sale–and cereal (when on sale). Generally I think there are items I always have, but don’t necessarily have to buy each week. Does that make sense?
Kristen@Change of Pace says
I buy bananas ALL THE TIME. I buy them at least once a week. What are my staples? Umm… bananas is number one, avocado, eggs, cheese, and probably hummus… Sabra hummus 😉 My kids go through a tub once a week! What a fun post!
Tara @ A Daily Dose of Fit says
Bananas, blueberries, whole milk (for Hannah), peanuts (for homemade peanut butter) and salsa. And if I’m being honest, sometimes I buy these things twice a week! Ha! Great post.
Gianna says
Hey Brittany!
My staples would be: peanut butter, bananas, berries, fiber one cereal, tortillas, yogurt!
Your blog is so fun and inspiring! I just started my own blog too! Reading your blog seriously inspired me to start my own! Hope you’ll check it out:

Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Milk, bread, and spinach are the things we run out of the fastest and are a regular buy each week.
Glad you guys had a nice low key weekend! Sometimes those are the best!
Alison says
Whoa! My family also gets bananas, yogurt, spinach, and hummus weekly! We also get milk, bread, and salmon very often.
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
Bananas are a MUST! And peanut butter 🙂
Stephanie @ Mr and Meatless says
We always buy bananas too! And greens. And almond milk. 🙂
Liz @ iheartvegetables says
Almost all of those things make my list, too!
Neil Butterfield says
Tomatoes and onions are a weekly essential in our home.
Tara@PNWRunner says
I am right there with you when it comes to yogurt. I eat it every. single. day. Next up on the list is granola….which goes in the yogurt!
Leah says
Loving this and your site! I’m very similar but I stopped buying the Sabra hummus because it contains soybean oil and isn’t organic (so I worry about GMO’s!).
