Catching up from the long weekend? I learned to love our current adventure and made cauliflower pizza for Hailey!
Yesterday was David’s birthday. This past Saturday was supposed to a be a celebratory night, but when he got sick, we cancelled. It just so happened that my mom came in town yesterday and David got home on the earlier side, meaning the stars aligned for us to have a night out in Birkdale! Luckily David’s birthday was one of our 2 free passes for Eat in Month.
I tend to be the chooser when we eat out, but last night I forced David to make all the decisions. It’s quite eye opening to see a man’s plan of an evening out.
It started at Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar with beer (I had a Big Boss Bad Penny brown ale that was awesome!) and house chips with pimento cheese and French onion dip.
Since Birkdale is a cute preplanned community, there are a lot of bars and restaurants within walking distance, so the birthday boy decided to appetizer hop!
We hit up Red Rocks and split their mussels and a Shock Top.
The conversation kept rolling. It’s amazing how easy it is to chat when neither one of us is focused on cutting food into tiny pieces or clearing the sugar packets out of toddler arm’s reach. So the night continued at Brixx with their Wood Roasted Vegetable Pizza (he actually chose veggies!!)
…and another beer. An Ommegang Hennepin Saison that was a bit too fruity for my taste and I couldn’t finish it all.
By this time we both figured it must be 9:30 or 10, but a quick glance at our phone proved it was 7:40- ha! I guess that’s what happens when you start the evening at 5:00. We figured we had time for an obligatory birthday dessert.
TCBY is David’s favorite. At this point we were stuffed and quite content. It amazes me that even though we spent all weekend side by side, we still easily fill an evening with conversation. I feel so grateful to be married to my best friend.
I’m also grateful to mom for the night out, so we decided to swing by Kilwins to pick her up some dark chocolate almond bark
…and try a few samples of toasted coconut ice cream.
Good thing birthday calories don’t count, right?
What would be on your dream birthday dinner list?
I’d have chips and salsa, a salad with a goat cheese nugget and then maybe something with buffalo sauce!

What a fun evening! Happy belated birthday to David. I could eat just about anything for my birthday meal, but my birthday dessert has GOT to include ice cream…preferably on top of a warm gooey cookie or brownie. Yum. Is it too early in the a.m. for that now?! 🙂
Shari says
I agree with David – TCBY is the best!
Hanna says
I’d have to say Pizza from Barnaby’s or The Red Elephant with a pitcher of beer. YUM!
Susan @ Real Life Travels says
This makes me kind of miss Birkdale (and beer and Kilwins and TCBY) :). Glad you guys got a night out!
Brittany says
It’s all well worth it with that sweet little GIRL in your tummy!!!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Sounds like a fun night to me! Appetizer hopping is such a great idea – that way you get to try a little bit from a lot of different places! 🙂
Brittany says
Except chips was an ambitious start! Though tasty, they were pretty heavy- blah! But whatever the birthday boy wanted… 🙂
Kayla @ Lovely Ride says
MMM that frozen yogurt looks amazing! Looks like a fun night 🙂
Shanna, like Banana says
Haha Zach never chooses where we go either…
For my Bday (which happens to be in 2 days), I’m having Zach pick up Thai food and cupcakes. We already did our dinner out 2 weekends ago 😉
Brittany says
Happy early birthday!! Thai food sounds like an excellent choice!
Anne Kendall says
What a great idea! Like you, I usually make most of the decisions when it comes to Date Night, which is perfectly fine with my fiance. I’d love to have him plan a Date Night and make all of the decisions — I’d be interested to see what he chooses! My dream birthday dinner would involve some type of spinach salad with caramelized onions, blue cheese, and walnuts, then Bottom’s Up’s (Richmond, VA) legendary white pizza with onions and feta. Plus a Woodchuck or two 😉 Mmmm!
Brittany says
I haven’t had a woodchuck in forever, but you are so right- it’s delicious! And yes, anything with caramelized onions is a winner 🙂
Jen@HealthyFoodandFamily says
Such a fun night! The veggie pizza has me drooling right now!
Maria says
Happy Birthday, David! The idea of appetizer hopping – amazing.
My ideal birthday would included breadsticks and marinara, wood fired pizza and funfetti cupcakes. Oh and since I’m not a beer drinker, a Shirley Temple 🙂
Brittany says
Nothing wrong with a shirley temple! 😉
Sarah says
Salty chips with fake nacho cheese followed by chocolate covered strawberries and champagne! Quite a combo.
Brittany says
Haha, I love that you choose fake nacho cheese! I used to love that stuff but David despises it. He gets so mad when he orders nachos and it comes with fake cheese- ha!
Sarah says
True story: I spent 2 hours last weekend baking soft pretzels from scratch primarily so that I would have an excuse to eat nacho cheese 🙂
lindsay @ fuelmyfamily says
My ideal birthday meal would be something small like salmon and roasted veggies so I could have my real dinner which would be like a pound of froyo, I am OBSESSED! Just ask my husband (and our bank account!) You said birthday calories dont count, right?
Karen says
Hope David had a great birthday! My dream birthday dinner would probably be something from either an Italian or Thai restaurant. Also, I am not a big frozen yogurt/ice cream person but I love me some TCBY!!
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
Sounds like a great bday!
Danica @ It's Progression says
fun!! I love that idea of an appetizer hop 🙂
Angela says
Toasted coconut?!?! That sounds amazing!!!
My birthday is tomorrow and we are splurging on going to the Melting Pot. So good… but so bad. 🙂 Only once a year, right?
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Wow, that looks like a fantastic birthday meal, especially the chips with pimento cheese and that veggie pizza. Yum!! And you are right…birthday calories definitely do not count! 😉
Jessie says
Another January 21st birthday!! I’m glad you and David has such a wonderful night out by yourselves <3
kristi says
I can’t believe you chose TCBY over Kilwins!! I love tcby but salted caramel at kilwins is sooo ridiculous!
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
Oh goodness, I think I have been to that TCBY! [I think.] And do I spy mochi??? [That might be my favorite part of self-serve fro yo…]
