Brittany and I have done a ‘State of the Family’ type meeting for years. It started with a question of “Where are we in life?”, “Are we on the right track?”, “Can we afford the vacations this year?” and has become a good revisit for us once or twice a year to check in, visualize the progress we are making and make sure we are intentional about the things most important to us (time off, finances, kids).
We’ve had so much interest in our process that we’ve put together a workbook for you to use with your family!
Intro and Explanations
We break down the complexity and explain exactly how we use this workbook. In addition, we outline how long the process should take (<1 hr) and provide tips on how to get the most out of the exercise. The best part is you can use this over and over, as a communication tool and planning guide for your family.
Where You Are Now
What is the current state of your family? In this workbook, we help you track everything that you use to keep your life running now: liquid assets like your checking and credit card accounts and non-retirement savings; real assets like your house, car and furniture; retirement funds and planning; total net worth and more.
Where You Want to Go
What is the future of your family? Plan ahead for big purchases, home improvement projects, vacations and more. How much will they cost? How soon do you want to be able to purchase them? This workbook gets those dreams on paper, and gives you some specific goals to work on.
This workbook will help you put everything in one place, so you can get a simple, clear overview of where you are and where you want to go. But it's also a communication tool for you and your family to make sure that you're all on the same page. We've included some conversation-starters that work for our family, and that help us enjoy talking about our big dreams and goals, and that's something everyone can get involved with.
