Yesterday morning I woke up, sucked back a cup of tea and got ready for a busy day. At 7:30am Hailey was whining which is unusual so I went to check it out and as soon as I opened her door all the plans for the day changed.
The smell almost overpowered me and I instantly kicked into mom mode. I pulled her out of bed, stripped her down and took her right to the shower. Can I pause a moment and thank God for mom mode? I’d never be able to deal with some of these parenthood situations if it didn’t exist. I scrubbed her from head to toe and plopped her on the couch while I stripped the bed and started disinfecting the house.
My wonderful instagram friends pitched in with helpful advice and I took it. A low key day, bland food and HYDRATION. Oh, and more TV than I should admit to.
Being unable to find any bread in the house, I figured a waffle would do. Hailey downed two of them and asked for more. Though I saw appetite as a good sign, nerves still got the best of me and I denied her.
I knew hydration was important and she was extra thirsty, so I alternated water and Performance.
Performance is basically a natural Gatorade (no artificial colors, sweeteners or flavors and colored with seeds from the achiote tree). All Hailey cares about is it tastes like orange.
We did get some fresh air in the form of a double stroller walk, but otherwise it was many-a-book, some ballet and Mickey Mouse that got us to noon.
I had bone broth in the crockpot made from Monday night’s crockpot chicken leftovers, so I added some pasta and carrots and called it lunch. She ate about half the pasta, a couple carrots and a spoon of broth. C’est la vie.
I was worried the day hadn’t worn her out enough for a nap, but luckily being sick did because 3 hours of this happened:
Success!
By the afternoon, she really seemed normal, but I proceeded with caution just in case and kept it bland for dinner.
A baked potato with butter and salt. And can I pause and give a big virtual hug to my friend Jodi who dropped off two Russets in my mailbox? Thank you again!
I’m not one to welcome sick days (who is?), buuuuuuut I did get a ridiculous amount of stuff taken care of around the house. And staying in jammies almost all day was a cliché and welcome change of pace. Plus Kaitlyn? I think she appreciated a day at home to practice her skillz. She mastered rolling and now I can’t keep her on the activity mat.
Time to pull out the exersaucer. Already? HOW?
Anyway, that’s the latest from the Dixon house.
How do you handle sick days?
I remember growing up mom would hook me up with a really nice couch set up (blankets, extra pillows, etc), beverage options from sprite to slushies and depending on the type of sick, hot and sour soup. No wonder I still beg for my mom when I’m under the weather. What a sweet deal that was!

I’ve had a sick little one since Friday and a sick big kid (aka my husband) since Monday. I ended up taking yesterday off since my mom couldn’t come watch Elizabeth and it was pj’s for all, lots of bland food, water and pedialyte, tv watching, book reading and multiple naps with my little girl. Hopefully she is nearing the end of this GI bug!
Brittany Dixon says
Now the real question is, who is harder to deal with- the child or the husband? 😉
Jaclyn @ BumpSweat says
When I’m sick, I’m all about lounging on the couch to let my body rest and, in turn, heal. I felt a sore throat coming on yesterday and woke up with that and a stuffy nose this morning, so I’m going to try my best to rest as much as possible today. We’ll see how that goes. It’s easier said than done on a weekday, that’s for sure.
Brittany Dixon says
Being sick and pregnant is the pits!! Have you tried ACV or garlic? I hope you feel better soon <3
Sabrina says
I hope she feels better today.
Food: I give them pasta, baguettes, and juicy fruits.
Drinks: I give them whatever they want but not milk. Water and apple juice usually. We also make apple juice popsicles which is a brilliant idea my nanny had.
Activities: MOVIES! I have zero guilt over movies on sick days because when I’m sick all I want to do is lay around and watch tv.

Poor Hailey! I have gotten that same morning surprise with Canon. The thing is, he is a total stealth up-chucker. He has done that several times in the middle of the night, and I never heard a peep. And he never complained, just slept right through it. But the smell in the morning knocks you over. Ugh!
And it is so funny that you say that about mom mode because I am a person who CAN. NOT. Handle. Up-chuck. But somehow I just handle it when it comes to my son.
The bone broth soup is a staple in out house when it comes to sickness. I keep some in the freezer so I can de-thaw it and make soup when needed. And it really is supposed to boost the immune system and help you get over whatever is ailing you. Amazing stuff!
Brittany Dixon says
Yes, H never made a peep during the night either! It made me so sad (and a little sick myself) thinking that she slept in it- EW.
Kathy says
Hope all is well today!
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Oh that’s not fun! Thank goodness for mom mode is right. L hasn’t been sick all year and I keep waiting for it to hit… we’re due for a sick day!
Brittany Dixon says
It was only H’s second time throwing up ever so I was totally thrown for a loop and went on stage 5 lock down- haha! She seemed fine the rest of the day but mannnn she milked that TV time 😉
I hope sickness stays far away from your home, especially until sweet J is a little older 🙂
Jodi says
Hope today is a better day!!
Glad to help, and it was fun using your mailbox for target practice. The neighbors looked puzzled as I tossed them In with the car still moving, but my mad basketball skills as a kid paid off!
We were a boxed Lipton noodle soup mix as kids when sick. That and saltines and gingerale. But looking back, the soup was full of MSG and the gingerale was not really made from ginger but HFCS…. But, somehow it made us feel better!! 🙂 oh well. We survived. Now there’s a great post, all the foods we ate as kids that didn’t kill us but probably should have…( my number one: spam sandwiches…) okay, enough typing, can you tell we got on our plane too early????

Oh no poor little miss! Glad she’s feeling better and hopefully no on else gets it. My son is battling a stuffy nose but I think it’s more from putting things into it lately. Raisins, play dough, fingers… Not sure what the fascination is but it’s causing a little bacterial infection. I’m with you on the memory of sick couch beds. Those were the best!
Brittany Dixon says
Aw, haha! That sounds like such little boy antics! I hope you can fish them all out of their yourself 😉
Verna says
I cover the couch and their beds in beach towels when the kids are sick. Cheerios and Disney movies were my faves when I was little.
Kris says
Glad she is better. I would not opt for butter (grease) on the baked potato on an upset GI system, rather plain yogurt which will would be better for the gut.
Brittany Dixon says
I thought about yogurt but thought that would be too heavy on her system! But then I used butter haha! Oh well, it all seemed to work out 🙂
Marnie @ SuperSmartMama says
I hope little Hailey is feeling better soon. Something must be going around… my three year old came down with a virus last Wednesday afternoon, and he was on the ibuprofen for two full days before we took him into the doctor to see if he had strep (which is making its rounds at his daycare). Negative. We spent alot of time at home watching tv — so much so that now that he’s better, that’s all he asks for!

Your sick days as a kid sounds exactly like mine.
Danica @ It's Progression says
I hope she’s feeling well today and that no one else gets the bug! My parents both worked full-time so if we ever got sick it was incredibly hard for them to take a day off. I actually remember being home sick a couple of times in middle school and I had to be home alone because my poor parents couldn’t leave work. They’d call and check in as much as they could and made sure the couch (where I was plopped down) was surrounded by tissues, drinks, crackers, and a bucket if needed. What great memories? haha
GiGi Eats says
To be honest with you, I have not been sick in 2.5 years! How nuts is that? Did I just jinx myself? Man, I hope not! LOL!!! I truly believe it’s because of the probiotics, the vitamin D and the Quercetin I take, SERIOUSLY! Quercetin especially is a godsend! 🙂
char eats greens says
Glad that Hailey got to nap and feel better. I hope this mom mode is built in to me too, because I’m worried for those times of needing to disinfect the house from a sick child! I feel pretty lucky to have made it this far without any of that yet! A good day in PJs and organizing the house is always a nice surprise!! 🙂
Brittany @ Delights and Delectables says
POOR BABY! Sending her and momma a huge hug!!! Sometimes the slow pace is what we need. I’ve got to get on making some bone broth!
