The warmer temperatures that teased us a couple weeks ago will be back soon. Not this week (can you say hello 34 degrees and goodbye garden?), but next week some days climb into the low 70’s and it has me thinking all things spring. I’m so excited for warmer temperatures because dressing two kids is so much easier when throwing a dress and sandals on is all it takes. And in hopes on continuing the
I’m hoping to share a few things I have lined up in my closet with you and get your feedback.
Yes, unfortunately that means a ton of pictures taken with my self-timer. But bear with me, as I value your input as I try and up my style game just a smidge.
When I first cleaned out my closet this season, I realized I really didn’t have much of anything for warmer weather. So first things first, I scheduled a Stitch Fix delivery. I really love to do one at least once a season, if not more, just to help give me ideas. It’s incredible how many things they’ve sent me that I would have never tried on myself, but end up loving.
Also, some how they are the only ones that can find maxi dresses that beautifully suit my 5’1″ stature!
I love this maxi dress Stitch Fix sent me! I got a snap(chat) back from a reader (Hi Melissa!) that said she received the same one and loves it too! If flowy, comfortable dresses that work with flats are your thing, you can actually pin the picture to you stitch fix style board or send it to you stylist to request the same one. Super cool.
Other maxi dresses I’m eyeing are this solid one for everyday wear (I want it in every color!) and this one because it is just so feminine and I think I’d feel like a princess. Yes, secretly I’m 4 years old too. But beautiful long dresses just feel so good on, including this hand-me-down version from one of my fashionista best friends.
I’m not sure where she got it from, but this Lily Pulitzer one looks similar.
I’m also really loving jean jackets as an easy toss-over-anything for spring. Old Navy has some great affordable option right now, like this washed denim, similar to the one I’m wearing and this white one, which is currently sitting in my cart.
I’m not overly into the gladiator style sandal on me, so I do like having a metallic flat sandal option like this one, or if I wanted to splurge, I’d get these. A handful of my friends have these in different colors and swear they go with everything, but I have yet to bite the bullet.
Speaking of sandals, while I like my Target version, I am so excited that THESE simple sandals are supposed to show up on my doorstep today. I have a feeling I will be wearing them everyday. They are currently on sale too!
Stitch Fix sent me this top and though I didn’t hate it with my beloved straight leg white jeans (that I also want in their skinny version), I didn’t love it either, so I sent it back.
I only ended up keeping the maxi dress from this fix, as I sent these three back as well.
None of them did anything for me, but I sure do think my favorite wedges (similar) go with everything, don’t I?!
Let’s see, what else…
Simple sundresses- with pockets!
This floral sundress was another hand-me-down from my friend and it is everything I love about spring a summer. Breezy, comfortable and did I mention the pockets? So much fun.
If I’m being completely honest though, what you will usually find me in once the weather warms up is shorts.
I got the red Loft shorts above from ThredUp, an online consignment shop that has great prices for buying clothes (especially for kids!). I’ve heard mixed reviews on trying to sell through them though, just FYI.
However, my favorite shorts forever and ever will always be THESE (currently on sale!). I have them in 4 different colors and they are comfortable and flattering.
My only problem, if you can’t tell above, is that I have no clue what shirts to wear with shorts for casual, day to day wear. I’m stuck with the white tee and while it’s not terrible, I’d love a different option.
Any suggestions?
So there are my basics for spring and summer. Nothing you are going to find on any runway (ever– I tried to look up current trends and found myself giving the computer screen the stink-eye in confusion– people actually wear that stuff?!), it’s what I am feeling good in while running around trying to keep up with my kiddos.
Now please weigh in–
What items are you loving for spring?
What is your go-to day to day outfit for warmer weather?

Beautiful outfits!
How about a white linen shirt with rolled up sleeves, tucked into the shorts in the front? That’s what I would wear with them… 🙂
Warmer weather here in Munich is still substantially cooler than in NC, so currently I still go for skinny jeans and a button-down. But as soon as it’s warmer I have a few stripey dresses lined up. 🙂
Have a great weekend!

I love the sound of that– can you link me to one so I can get a better idea of it?
Kate says
The color combination is not what I would personally go for, but the style and vibe of the outfit is exactly how I would wear it: http://www.uniqlo.com/au/store/women/collections/linen.html
I actually own an uniqlo linen shirt and would recommend them in terms of quality, but I feel their fit is on the longer side (I’m 5’4)…
You can also check out my instagram (@aheartymatter) if you want to see some more half-tuck action 😉

Ah, I see- thank you!! I’ll be on the look out for one to try 🙂

I love your picks! My staple spring/summer top is a timeless striped top like the JCrew striped boat neck t-shirt. Looks sharp with almost anything! I’m also loving a lightweight utility jacket as a jean jacket alternative. I bought the Forever 21 Classic Utility Jacket – very affordable version!
Kelli says
Love those J Crew chinos, I own a few pairs myself. You should try Madewell’s v-neck Cotten shirts. They are soooo comfy, affordable, and don’t shrink after washing! I got mine at Nordstrom but you could order online as well. Shorts are also my summer staple 🙂
Millie Jones says
adorable! Love the maxi’s and jean jacket. comfy yet can be dressed up or down! I absolutely LOVE jack rogers. I have about 5 pairs and they are amazing, wearing them in my wedding in October :). also I agree with you about selling on thredup. I have done it twice only due to its convenience but you don’t get as much as you could at other consignment places. I’ve found you can make much more from plato’s closet.
Cait says
great outfits my friend! im really excited for floral pieces to be back in season and just love wearing shorts and tshirts too!

I don’t have very much fashion sense, so I always need help and should never give any advice. Ha!
I have read about the Green Jeans consignment sale here in the spring, so I think I am going to check it out this time around. The Lake Norman sale is in April, and the Charlotte one is in May.
Brittany Dixon says
Yes, I’ve heard great things about Green Jean and hope to check it out myself!
Leigh says
Where is your white t-shirt from in the shorts pictures? I’ve been looking for a thicker white t-shirt…so many are so thin!
Brittany Dixon says
It’s actually from Old Navy! However, I probably got it about 2 years ago. I have it in light pink too though and they both are pretty opaque!
Josephine sharpe says
spring is here and I pregnant. For some reason pregnancy jeans and trousers always fall down on me, leggings are a bit hot for summer and that means I have to negotiate my bump to try to still shave my legs. I think you just solved my fashion dilemma – I need maxi dresses!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
We pretty much have the same exact style. I always wear shorts with a t-shirt. Not sure how else to wear them! Then again, I’m mostly about practical clothes vs. how my outfit looks. I like to be comfortable! Those j-crew are my favorite shorts, too! I have 4 pairs, too and those blue ones you’re wearing.
Lauren @ Oh Hey! I Like That! says
I’m SO glad that jean jackets are back! And nothing beats a good maxi dress 🙂
Lauren says
This weather is the worst!
Love the maxi dresses on you! Your style looks pretty good to me, similar to mine on the weekend anyway 🙂 if I dress up that much!
Just checked out the shorts and see a 5″ version too, as someone who hates shorts, I’m thinking of trying a pair.
You make me want to checkout Nordstrom and J crew, so thanks for that. Hahah.
Elizabeth says
I have those jcrew shorts in lots of different colors. I haven’t worn them in awhile, because they’re all pre-babies, and my oldest is almost 4. I still have them tucked away in my closet b/c I can’t bear to get rid of them : )
I love dresses, especially in the summer.
I cleaned out my closet with thread up & was REALLY UNIMPRESSED. I’d rather donate to goodwill than get $16.51 for my 20+ designer items that I sent to them.
Brittany Dixon says
Yeah, that is what I have heard about selling through them. I actually just ordered a clean out bag and am going to send a bunch of stuff in to see for myself how it goes. I’m not expecting much!
Alyssa @ renaissancerunnergirl says
I’m a little afraid of maxi dresses because I feel like at 5 ft they’d make me seem even shorter or like I’m swimming in them. But these are adorable!
Cara says
Love these posts as I am also trying to style up my wardrobe (and have no idea how!). Those maxi dresses are adorable! Finding maxi dresses that suite my petite 5’1 frame is impossible, so thank you for the options! Those JCrew shorts as well as the LOFT shorts and jeans (and LOFT modern capris) are my go-tos in the spring/summer. I usually just do t-shirts or tanks with them as well. Sometimes a tank and a light cardigan works too depending on the weather.
Dukebdc says
There’s nothing wrong with a classic white t-shirt! What brand t-shirt are you wearing – it’s looks nice and opaque? I’m on a never-ending quest for a plain white t-shirt that isn’t see-through. I have a larger chest and most modern t-shirts are too thin and see-through for me to wear without a tank underneath. And when you’re already a 30GG adding another layer to your chest is not appealing! 🙂
I have two V-neck, elastic waist Calvin Klein maxi dresses (got one on a sale rack at Macy’s and the other for less than half price on Ebay) and they have been the perfect length for me at 5’2″. The straps are wide enough to cover bra straps which (see above) is a must-have for me.
Brittany Dixon says
It is actually from Old Navy but probably 2 or so years old. I have it in light pink too!
Julie says
LOVE the 2 dresses you got from your friend! You look super cute in all your outfits. I don’t think you need any help at all. 🙂
Heather says
I can’t wait for summer! I don’t wear a lot of shorts, but I love wearing capris and skirts with capri leggings or just a simple skirt. I’m just looking forward to pulling out cute strappy tops and anything flowy that doesn’t have to fit under layers!
Amanda @ Cheers to the Weekends says
I love those jcrew shorts too! I love maxi dresses too and I’m only 5’3″. I have gotten a lot of mine from Victoria Secret online. 🙂
Nicole says
I have several pairs of the Miller sandals by TB but would find it hard to pay full price. I only have them because my brother used to work for TB and would get 60% off during friends & family sales. They are very versatile and comfortable. I also have several pairs of her beach flip flops and wear them all the time!
Lee says
I love these fashion posts.
Lucy says
You should totally get the Tory Burch Miller sandals. They are my favorite sandals- I have them in tan I wear th everywhere. Actually asking for a black pair for my birthday! I also love J Crew shorts
Julia @ Lord Still Loves Me says
The second maxi dress in this post is absolutely stunning, Brittany! Actually, all of the dresses featured here are beautiful.
