Hello, hello! I’ll bet you were confused by the title, right? Brittany is offering mom styling hacks? Fear not, these tips are not from me. Kate is a longtime reader and blogs at A Hearty Matter about encouraging busy women to embrace simple wardrobes and live a more intentional life. Isn’t that beautiful? Kate reached out to me after one of my fashion posts to inquire about sharing some of her favorite tips on how she looks pulled together as a busy mom herself. Knowing that I am open to all simple tricks in the fashion arena, I thought it would be great to share for all you other busy mamas out there too. I think these tips are fabulous and I’m already working on putting them into action myself. So please help me welcome Kate to the blog!
Hi I’m Kate and I blog at aheartymatter.com about all the things I that are dear to my heart: my life as a mom, a healthy lifestyle, and first and foremost about how to combine my busy daily life with a simple and intentional lifestyle.
Topics I often write about are my simplified closet and my strategies to look put together for my day without wasting energy and time on my outfit.
Because really, when we think about it, the most important decisions in our days are not those that we make in front of the closet, but those that we make in our relationship, at work or in our daily life with our kids.
I am absolutely thrilled that Brittany offered me the opportunity to post on her blog today, because her blog, her healthy living philosophy, and most definitely her personality have continued to inspire me over the years and have been such a great resource on my quest to a healthy lifestyle for me and my family. Today, I will in turn inspire both Brittany and all of you who are on a quest to advance their personal style.
The mom look
What do you see when you think of the mom look?
A mom, with a top bun, a torn t-shirt and yoga pants, overall a slightly disheveled and frumpy appearance?
Especially in those early weeks and months postpartum I looked like this on most days. But over time I have acquired strategies and tricks that help me look more put together on a day-to-day basis without wasting my precious time in front of the closet.
One – very powerful – strategy has been simplifying my closet. This is a big one – if that’s something you’re interested in, head over to my blog where I share a lot of tips and tricks on how to make this big, slightly intimidating, change happen. The other strategy, and this is the one I will talk about today, is using little hacks you can implement today to spruce up your look.
These five hacks will work for any woman really. But being a mom myself I know that getting dressed as a mom comes with a unique set of challenges (a lot less time, a different body, being in search of your new identity, just to mention a few). Also, these hacks will work no matter what your style is – whether you love flowy feminine dresses or skinny jeans like me. So let’s jump right in:
1 Upgrade individual pieces
You don’t need to overhaul your entire style to look more put together, just upgrade one piece of your outfit. How about a chino or comfy boyfriend jeans instead of yoga pants, a skirt or dress instead of shorts, or a button-down shirt instead of a t-shirt?
My favorite way to upgrade my look is the button-down shirt. With a half or full tuck and rolled up sleeves it’s casual enough for running errands or going to the playground, but instantly gives you the appearance like you invested time and energy in your outfit.
Wearing a complementary scarf, adding a necklace, bracelet, or even statement earrings can be an easy way to give your outfit a little something. At the same time, accessories can make getting dressed more interesting for you, too. Personally, I’m rather minimal when it comes to accessories – in part because of my 17-month-old (I’m sure I don’t have to go into the details of a toddler-necklace-situation… *wink*). Again, less is more: just adding a few items can transform your entire appearance.
From I just rolled out of bed to I invested time to look put together in 3 steps and less than 1 minute.
Tucking the shirt in breaks up the silhouette and adds a little movement to the fabric. Both the watch and the bracelet add a little something to the outfit. With these small changes, you already transformed the way your outfit looks.
If you want to take it one step further, add a scarf, cardigan, or other layer piece. Here, the scarf complements all the colors in the outfit and creates the illusion of a longer torso.
3 High-quality basics
Basics will be the cornerstone of your wardrobe – really of any wardrobe in my opinion – so consider investing in high-quality basics. No, not that silk-cashmere t-shirt that is hand wash only. That will be a nightmare to get stains out. But invest in good quality garments that won’t bail on you after three washes.
In my opinion natural fibers like cotton and linen are the route to go here. They wear more comfortably, typically last longer, and just look much better up-close than synthetic fibers. Wearing a t-shirt that feels great against your skin and that doesn’t look cheap can make a world of a difference in how confident you feel in your outfit.
4 Rinse. Repeat.
I’ll let you in on a secret: you need to be less creative and elaborate with your outfit than you think. Most likely, you are the only one who notices when you repeat an outfit. Seriously, I wear almost identical outfits every day, and no one has ever asked me whether I really own identical button-down shirts (yes, I do, 6 of them…). If you want to get creative with your outfit for your own pleasure, by all means go for it. My point is: don’t feel like you are expected to come up with a super-unique outfit every day.
Getting multiples and repeating outfits makes your life a ton easier – think about how much time and energy you could save. So if you have an outfit that you love, I dare you to recreate it, to repeat it, and to enjoy the freedom of sticking with what you love.
5 Invest in great shoes
In my opinion, shoes are the place to splurge. A well made, well taken care of shoe can make an entire outfit. Personally, I’m just not a heels-girls, although Brittany keeps impressing me with her shoes, so I might reconsider… These silver slip-ons have been a little splurge of mine, but the investment has been well worth it. They take a basic outfit from boring to put together. They are incredibly well made, super-comfy, and just look so darn stylish.
I strongly believe that every woman can feel confident in her clothes and her outfit. What these hacks – and all my other fashion strategies – boil down to is being intentional about what you wear.

I actually wore a lot more dresses before I had my son, but after birth I was much more drawn to skinny jeans.
