Thanks for all your feedback about where I should go from here!
I’ve decided that I will most likely rejoin the Y… although I might wait until they have a $0 enrollment special. That usually happens in January. In the meantime, I want to sign up for another 5k, because I’ve realize it’s the only way to motivate me to run in this cold weather.
Brr….
Speaking of cold weather, what do you wear to run in the cold? I”ve been wearing yoga pants and t-shirts, but now that I want to stick with running, I’m considering investing in some real running gear… all you fab runners out there, let’s hear it!
What do you wear to run in the cold winter months??
Here are a couple 5ks I’ve found and am considering…
1. The Reindeer Romp December 11. This 5k is in Sherrills Ford, NC, which is across the lake from where I live. It will most likely be a small race. Pros: there will be visitors from the north pole, I wouldn’t mind a t-shirt that said reindeer romp, and it’s fairly close by! Cons: I’d be running it alone, it’s the same day as my bro’s 30th birthday & about the time my best friend’s baby is due
2. Thunder Road December 11. This 5k would be the polar opposite of The Reindeer Romp… it’s gonna be HUGE. It’s in downtown Charlotte and it’s main focus is on the marathon and 1/2 marathon. Pros: it would be a very exciting race to be a part of, most of the other Charlotte bloggers are running it (the big races, not the 5k ;)), it has an exhibit with free stuff. HAHA. I like free stuff. Cons: it’s the same day as my bro’s 30th birthday & about the time my best friend’s baby is due
3. Jingle Bell Road November 20. This 5k is close to where I live, it raises money for arthritis, there are supposed to be a lot of cute, dressed up kids. Pros: close to where I live, a late start (9am). Cons: It’s SO soon, it’s the day after my best friend’s couples baby shower which would mean no drinking
Hmm…. decisions, decisions…. 🙂
HAPPY FRIDAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!
PS…
&
defnitely do the jingle bell one!! out of the first two, i’d do #1 – i feel like smaller races are less crowded and you get a better time 🙂
I think you should do one in Raleigh, and visit me 🙂
I think you should do either of the dec 11th ones. Mainly bc thats my birthday! haha 🙂
If I would you do, I’d do the smaller 5K one. There’s just such a great community vibe to small races and they make me feel less intimidated.
Thanks for the race sites – I haven’t used them before and they are such a great resource!
I don’t know if huge is always better..dang decisions, decisions. Do what doesn’t take you away from family and friends:)
The Jingle Bell run is happening all over the country that day, there’s one in my city too! I will run it if we are not skiing!
I just started to try out running but the cold and rain are making it so difficult. I’m going to have to buy real running gear too. As for the races, I just think Reindeer Romp sounds cute 🙂
awww Britt I just am flattered that I am one of your cons on all of your runs! Man I feel importat…but I mean I like the sound of the jingle and reindeer run and I’m with you sounds like really cool t-shirts…haha wow are we runners or do we like the freebies?! Anyways I can’t wait till I can drive to Charlotte and run one of these races with you….it will be soooo fun!!! Good luck whichever one you decide I know you will do great again!!!!
I went out in the cold this morning wearing yoga pants, an UnderArmor shirt, a windblazer, gloves, and a beanie and was STILL freezing! Hmm..for races I’d definitely recommend HotHands at least. That way your fingers or feet dont get frozen 🙂
The Reindeer Romp and Jingle Bell Road sound like to most FUN. Plus I like that they incorporate holiday themes…I too would love a shirt that says “Reindeer Romp”! 😀
Under Armor is a great way to stay warm on winter runs…It’s all about layers, layers, layers! Also, ear braziers go a long way keeping your head warm. Thick running tights are great too!
I second the recommendations on layers. Get some running tights and put them on under your usual running pants, look for a skin tight long sleeve top (I like turtlenecks for colder temps) to go under your t-shirt, and a light waterproof jacket for the top layer. I also recommend a good headband that can cover your ears, and running gloves.
There are a lot of cold-weather running products out there on the market, but last year I just used a pair thin leggings and turtlenecks sold as winter under-garments under the ‘heat-tech’ line at the bargain chain Uniqlo here in Japan. They worked really well for me!
Everyone talks about UnderArmour… but I just like my good ole Nike pants and turtleneck. Yes, I said turtleneck. It’s that shiny fabric that wicks sweat and it has little thumb holes so the shirt stays down over my hands and fingers. Winter races are fun! I did one where people dress up in a Christmas costume.
