David took off Friday to spend the weekend with some buddies of his, which left the girls and alone at home. I feel fairly confident I handled everything like a pro.
With our May schedule keeping us pretty busy during the week, I decided to stay low-key so we spent most all of Saturday just chilling at home. It took almost the entire morning to wash and dry my latest CSA pickup, so it worked out well and now I’m stocked on fresh leafy greens.
Possibly the fullest my fridge has ever been! The girls and I snacked our way through, trying everything, and I learned egg salad is a new kid favorite around here.
The kale pesto (modified from this recipe– I used walnuts instead of almonds) was pretty tasty too.
Also somehow I killed my Kitchen Aid mixer. I have no idea what happened but when I plugged it in and turned it on— nothing. My heart broke a little bit but now I’ve added call customer service to my to do list. At least my hand-kneading didn’t screw things up too much. Mmm, fresh sourdough!
The girls and I took early baths and cuddled on the couch to watch Home (with the purple alien- cute). They went to bed a little early and I spent 3 hours online finalizing our homeschool curriculum choices for the fall. I’m really excited to get everything in hand and start combing through it. I rewarded my efforts by staying up late and hanging out with Bridget.
I haven’t watch a chick-flick in ages and Bridget Jones’ Baby literally had me laughing out loud several times.
Sunday morning I think the girls’ ate crazy pills for breakfast because the behavior that morning was nothing short of rotten. I felt like I was spending the entire morning sending them to their rooms and correcting behavior. It wore me down to the point that I actually called David, almost in tears, just to ask him what the heck happened to my ability to parent.
Lucky for me, my plans with friends were scheduled for exactly the right moment and when my sitter showed up at 11, I hightailed it out the door.
A dear friend of mine, Jodi, just had a birthday and we all felt 40 was really worth celebrating! We rented a limo and headed for North Carolina wine country. Apparently between Charlotte and Winston Salem there are over 70 wineries?! Who knew.
We hit up Piccione Vineyards first for a tasting. I was surprised by a couple of the wines that were better than I was expecting.
Afterwards we headed to Raffaldini Vineyards, which despite the clouds and drizzle, was breathtakingly gorgeous. Who knew we had this so close by?
We set up shop here, with another tasting and a smorgasbord of snacks.
Tiffany’s salsa was on point!
Conversation flowed, we laughed a lot, and overall it was exactly what I need to let go of the craziness of the morning. Such a great group of ladies.
We headed back towards home in the late afternoon. The rain started coming down harder but we weren’t ready for the fun to end… so it didn’t.
We got back to Jodi’s neighborhood pool and realized it was still open. Someone suggested we take a dip. I believe I uttered the phrase YOLO as we all climbed up on the blocks looking at each other like, are we really going to do this?!
Yup, we really did.
Two jumps in the pool and one water slide later, we felt certain this birthday celebration would stay memorable.
It was such a wonderful afternoon with friends that I’m grateful to have. By the time I got home, David had both girls already in bed (thankyouthankyouthankyou). Now I’m starting Monday with a clean slate, though a slightly woozy head, yet somehow still feeling rejuvenated. Girl time, man; it can not be underrated.
Fingers crossed that the girls stay away from the crazy pills today!
Are your kids crazy lately?!
I think May is going to wear mine out.
Have you watched any good movies lately?

“Whining to wine” = cute! Your favorite wine was? Happy Monday!

We have been having a lot of those crazy days around here where I feel I just correct and send to time out too The wine trip sounded like perfect timing. I woke up with one son with a 101 fever and we leave for Moab Wednesday. I’ve been looking forward to hiking and relaxing with my family. I hope he’s better by then. Have a good week.
Brittany Dixon says
Oh no, I’m sorry to hear about the fever! Hopefully some R&R will have him back up and running by Wednesday. Kids recover so quickly!
Heather says
I’m so glad that it hasn’t just been my kids completely acting crazy lately. Is it something in the air? 3 kids from my son’s preschool class were sent home early on Friday (including my son) and this weekend I felt like I was constantly sending someone to their room and running interference. A girl’s day out sounds fantastic – you really can’t go wrong when wine is involved. 😉
Brynn says
Yes, I love that you all jumped in the pool! We (finally) watched Moana this weekend and loved it!
Brittany Dixon says
Moms gone wild! WHOOP! 😉 Haha, it was such a blast. Ah yes, we still love Moana after many viewings- so good!!

Bridget Jones Baby also had me laughing out loud. My husband watched it with me but I don’t think he appreciated it as much ha! If you haven’t, see “Arrival” with Amy Adams. Even if you are not a science fiction fan, it has some interesting underlying parenting themes. Not a happy, laugh out loud movie, but I found it captivating. It’s based on a short story by Ted Chiang. Girls day looked fun! I visited some NC breweries for a bachelorette party some years ago, great times and great service at the small wineries!
Brittany Dixon says
Oh thanks for the movie suggestion!!
Kim says
Aww looks like a fun day with the girls! The kids around here have been very nutty lately. But never question your parenting, you are a fantastic mom and thankfully have amazing kids, it was probably a shocker lol
Brittany Dixon says
Oh thank you Kim! That’s sweet of you to say. I do have great kids but man I was ready to get OUT OF HERE for a bit 😉
montessoriishmom says
I’m so glad you got a break after a crazy morning! It is amazing how even a few hours break can be so refreshing. Wine tasting is my favorite 🙂
Taryn says
Glad to hear other kids take crazy pills, too! My 3 1/2 year old has been SO BAD lately. Thursday morning she spent a solid 30 minutes in time out crying. Such a stubborn one! Hopefully it’s the time of year. Hears to a better week!
Brittany Dixon says
Well that makes me feel better too! I felt like we were in such a good rhythm for a while and I’m just like what happened?! Crazy kids…
Jennie says
What a fun weekend…mostly, right?!?! I had to comment because I spied your off the shoulder top in Instagram live and loved it!!! Shopping details please?
Brittany Dixon says
Oh thanks!! It’s from Nordstrom (I linked to it above in the post but I think it’s truly just called “off the shoulder blouse” if you search on their site!
Erica says
Bridget Jones Baby is a great one!! I saw that with friends last fall. Girl time can be really restorative, moreso than even a date night with hubby (where we invariably talk about budgets or kid), because with dedicated girl time, you can really just turn off your mom/wife/life brain and just have fun!
My son (just turned 5) is definitely crazy, as is our May. Between end-of-year celebrations for all of his activities, preparation for his pre-k graduation (which is a Big Deal), and oh yeah, we’re having another baby in July … he is out of control. We’re trying to get a lot of our summer bucket list items crossed off before baby comes, and I think the big activities on weekends are making Mondays really hard.
Good luck with your week!
Brittany Dixon says
We have Pre-K graduation this week too. I’m already stuffing tissues into my purse…
New baby coming soon?! Ah, that’s so exciting! A sweet summer baby! Hope you are feeling well 🙂
Stephanie says
haha it’s a parenting truth that something extra good – like an early bedtime – means a storm is coming
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, exactly! Just when you start to think, I’ve got this!… 😉
Danielle says
Wine is always good when a girl needs to let her hair down 🙂 If you’re looking for a good movie, I liked Gifted a lot (also, Chris Evans is quite easy on the eyes). And yessss to egg salad! My sisters and I grew up on egg salad and tuna fish sandwiches, and I just had egg salad for the first time in ages on Saturday, and I am already planning to have it again multiple times this week!
Katie says
I was in Napa last week and wine was on the top of my mind, so we watched “Bottle Shock” on Friday night. It was great!
Brittany Dixon says
We watched that too! We really enjoyed it as well. And wow, Napa! Can’t wait to go there one day!
Jen says
Love the pool jump in the end!!
Random question — can your friend share the details on her halter top jumpsuit? Love it! And I have already ordered your adorable off the shoulder top!
Thanks for being a “real” blogger!
Brittany Dixon says
Hi Jen! Thanks for the kind words 🙂 I asked Kelly about her jumpsuit (it really was so cute!). She said she got it at a local boutique (Monkees LKN). She said if you aren’t local then she can look at the designer/tag when she gets home!
Jen says
Thanks Brittany! Unfortunately, I am not local. I live in the NoVA/DC area. So let me know what she finds out!

Looks like a wonderful getaway! I have been wanting to go to that winery with my husband since moving to NC! But more importantly – If you call Kitchenaid customer service, they are seriously the BEST ever. I am not joking! My stand mixer had black smoke pouring out of the vent and I was so devastated, at Christmas time no less while making Christmas cookies!! I called them thinking what the heck – might as well see if they can fix it for me. Well – they did not fix it. They REPLACED the entire unit for FREE because it was less than 2 years old (it was pushing 2 yrs)! I almost fell off my chair! I was so happy and they expedited it to me as well, so I had it in like 2 days!! Even if your mixer is older, I would call them – they might give you credit towards a new one or just decide to replace it. Best service ever.
