Halloween is low-pressure, coincides with that first fall breeze excitement, and is full of spooky fun. It’s so much fun to celebrate in age appropriate ways with this list of Halloween movies for young kids.

We love holiday flicks and have categorized our favorite Halloween movies for young kids based on age recommendations, but of course this will differ so much depending on your child.

Hailey is almost 10 and we still plan on enjoying House of Villians and Boo Fest this year (traditions!). She also can watch a lot of the slightly scarier movies without flinching. Kaitlyn (7 years old) on the other hand, will lose sleep at night if anything is too creepy. I recommend looking these up on Common Sense Media for a detailed explanation of rating and suitability for your child.

Halloween Movies for Ages 3-5

• Spookley the Square Pumpkin (2005): A narrator tells the story of Spookley, a small pumpkin who just realizes he is the only square pumpkin in the patch. An abundance of musical numbers fill out the story with positive lessons about fitting in. Read the book.
• Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Party (2005): A Halloween adventure in Hundred Acre Woods. Lumpy teams up with Little Roo in this animated tale about friendship, bravery, and teamwork.
• Curious George: A Halloween Boo Fest (2013): Hang on to your hats and get ready for a spook-tacular good time with Curious George. Autumn is here, bringing colorful leaves, hay rides, pumpkin patches, and the annual Boo Festival. After hearing about a legendary scarecrow who steals hats, the inquisitive monkey and his friends set out to find him.
• It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966): Will this Halloween be the one when the Great Pumpkin comes? Longtime believer Linus thinks so, and keeps watch all night in the pumpkin patch to welcome him. Charlie Brown gets into the spooky spirit too, dressing up as a ghost with more eyeholes than needed. Good grief, you can’t help but have a happy Halloween!
• Mickey Mouse House of Villains (2002): The film shows several Disney cartoons. In fact, these shorts make up more of the movie than the actual plot with the villains, but pulled together by the plot of the villians taking over the house of mouse, this musical production is delightful for the whole family.
• Room on the Broom (2003): A story about a kind witch who invites a surprising collection of animals to join her on her broom, much to the frustration of her cat. The gang ultimately saves the witch from a fearsome dragon, and in gratitude she rewards them with a magnificent new broom which has room for everyone. Read the book first.
• Mickey’s Clubhouse Mickey’s Treat (2007): Put on your costume, grab your goody bag and join Mickey and his pals for spooktacular Halloween fun. Everyone’s invited to Big Pete’s Halloween party. But the gang needs to reach Trick-Or-Treat Tower before the moon is full, or the gates will lock and the party will be over before it even starts. Can they get through the foggy woods, past the Candy Corn Patch and over the drawbridge in time?
• The Cat and the Hat Know a lot about Halloween (2017): The Cat in the Hat takes Nick and Sally on a Halloween ride filled with howlers and shockers and scary fandangles, big laughs and music and fun from all angles! Their fright-filled adventure takes them deep into the Oooky-ma-kooky Closet where Nick and Sally discover the very best Halloween costumes ever.

Halloween Movies for Ages 6-8

• Toy Story of Terror (2014): What starts out as an exciting road trip for the Toy Story gang takes an unexpected turn for the worse following a detour to a roadside motel. After Mr. Potato Head suddenly disappears, his friends find themselves caught up in a hilarious mystery that must be solved before they suffer the same fate!
• The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): Bored with the old scare-and-scream routine, Pumpkin King Jack Skellington longs to spread the joy of Christmas. But his merry mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for good little boys and girls everywhere.
• Casper (1995): A “ghost therapist” and his daughter arrive at a house haunted by three rambunctious characters and Casper, the friendly ghost, setting the stage for some wild antics!
• Double Double Toil and Trouble (1993): The twins must outwit their mean Aunt Agatha, a nasty witch, to save their family’s home as they stir up a bubbling Halloween brew of spellbinding adventure, spooky delights and fun for the whole family. When the twins learn that Agatha has trapped her own sweet twin sister, Sophia, under a wicked spell they race to rescue their kindly aunt before it’s too late.
• Scooby Doo and the Goblin King (2008):  The Amazing Krudsky, a failed carnival magician, steals the light magic from Princess Fairy Willow, and Scooby-Doo and Shaggy must stop him or everyone will be turned into horrible Halloween monsters! Our heroes board the Grim Reaper Railroad into the fantastic world of Halloween Land to retrieve the powerful Goblin Scepter from the Goblin King before midnight.
• Monsters Inc (2001): There’s a reason why there are monsters in children’s closets—it’s their job. Monsters, Inc. is the most successful scream-processing factory in the monster world, and there is no better Scarer than James P. Sullivan. But when “Sulley” accidentally lets a little human girl into Monstropolis, life turns upside down for him and his buddy Mike.
• Hotel Transylvania (2012): Hotel T Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up and no humans are allowed. Hotel T2 the Drac-Pack is back in this hilarious comedy starring Drac, Mavis, Johnny and your favorite monsters in an all-new adventure!
• Alvin and the Chipmunks meet the Wolf Man (2000): Join the world’s most famous chipmunks as they uproariously collide with the legendary doctor and his creation in Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein. Race against the next full moon with the madcap brothers and their gal pal Chipettes as they howl with laughter in Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman.
• ET (1982): The unforgettable story of a lost alien and the 10-year-old boy who helps him find his way home.
• Little Monsters (1989): A child meets the monster that lives under his bed. He even becomes one of his best friends. Soon the child discovers a whole new world of fun and games under his bed where pulling pranks on kids and other monsters is the main attraction.
• The Addams Family (2019): Get ready to snap your fingers! The Addams Family is back in their first animated comedy about the kookiest family on the block. Funny, outlandish, and completely iconic, The Addams Family redefines what it means to be a good neighbor.

Halloween Movies for Ages 9+

• Hocus Pocus (1993): Three outlandish witches return from 17th-century Salem after they’re accidentally conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters! It’s a night full of zany fun and comic chaos once the tricky 300-year-old trio sets out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth — but first they must get their act together and outwit three kids and a talking cat!
• Halloweentown (1998): On her 13th birthday, Marnie learns she’s a witch, discovers a secret portal, and is transported to Halloweentown — a magical place where ghosts and ghouls, witches and werewolves live apart from the human world. But she soon finds herself battling wicked warlocks, evil curses, and endless surprises.
• Goosebumps (2015): After moving to a small town, Zach Cooper finds a silver lining when he meets next door neighbor Hannah, the daughter of bestselling Goosebumps series author R.L. Stine. Stine is very strange and mysterious and it turns out for good reason. He is a prisoner of his own imagination – the monsters that his books made famous are real, and Stine protects his readers by keeping them locked up in their books. When Zach unintentionally unleashes the monsters from their manuscripts and they begin to terrorize the town, it’s suddenly up to Stine, Zach, and Hannah to get all of them back in the books where they belong.
• Monster House (2006): No adults believe three youths’ assertion that a neighboring residence is a living creature that means them harm. With Halloween approaching, the trio must find a way to destroy the structure before innocent trick-or-treaters meet ghastly ends.
• The Witches (1990): A young boy stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse. Based on a book by Roald Dahl.
• Beetlejuice (1998): When a couple of nice, young homebody ghosts try to haunt the pretentious humans who have moved into their house, they ask for help from a demonic wraith they cannot control in this comic fantasy that mixes the quick and the dead with a laugh and a fright.
• Coraline (2009): While exploring her new home, a girl named Coraline discovers a secret door, behind which lies an alternate world that closely mirrors her own but, in many ways, is better. She rejoices in her discovery, until Other Mother and the rest of her parallel family try to keep her there forever. Coraline must use all her resources and bravery to make it back to her own family and life.
• Ghostbusters (1984): Ghosts invade New York and force a trio of spirit exterminators to save the city in one of the biggest comedies of all time.
• The Haunted Mansion (2004): A fright-filled comedy adventure loaded with hair-raising laughs and eye-popping special effects! A real estate agent and his family family comes face-to-face with 999 grim, grinning ghosts in the creepy old Gracey Manor! Now with the help of supernatural psychic Madame Leota they must hilariously battle to break the mansion of its age-old curse … and do it before the clock strikes 13! (Did you know, Disney is making a reboot of this movie starring Owen Wilson that will begin shooting in fall 2021)
