Months ago when the buzz about the summer games kicked up, David and I had this grand idea to throw a party on the weekend of the opening ceremonies. Much like our Cinco de Derby parties of yore, we pictured yard games, contests, and themed food and drinks.
However, like life has a tendency to do, the year flew by and suddenly we were left with the fact that the opening ceremonies were days away. We put our party aspirations to the side and stuck to grilling burgers and watching the the ceremonies on this past Friday night. But somewhere between the giant rain forest scene and the parade of countries, we were bitten hard by the Olympic bug.
Saturday morning we decided to turn to NBC real quickly, just to show the girls an event or two, but BAM. Just like that, we were all drawn into the excitement, the competition, and the camaraderie. Next thing you know, we were pulling out our 4th of July decor and making homemade signs, as we explained new sports to the girls, cheered on the USA, and looked up countries we weren’t familiar with on our world map.
They LOVED it. And so did we. I’m not even a bit embarrassed to admit we kept the competitions on all day long. We watched swimming, biking, volleyball, gymnastics, rugby, judo, fencing, and more. The girls were inspired to try their own at-home events. We started with creative planking.
Then moved on to the high jump.
Post quiet time, as the girls were asking for a snack, I decided screw it, we’re officially having our own summer games party. A quick stop by my local CVS store (have you tried their curbside express? It’s every mom’s dream) later, I was prepped and ready to go.
Keeping with the competitive theme, we sampled, snacked, and rated our favorite snacks.
While David was partial to the berry and nut clusters, I had a feeling what the girls might choose as their favorite.
I was close to being right, but these tiny snacks ended up taking home the gold.
Greek yogurt covered raisins for the win!
I should have known.
CVS’ Gold Emblem and Gold Emblem Abound lines provide such a wide variety of products that it was easy to pick up a ton of simple, grab-n-go options for our snack competition. Their curbside pick up makes it ridiculously quick and easy to grab what you need so you can spend your time enjoying the party instead of prepping food in the kitchen. But most importantly, they’re really tasty!
Though they didn’t take home the gold, Kaitlyn still downed these BBQ potato “fries” by the fistful.
With snacks, decorations, and events to cheer for, the girls went on and on about what an “awesome” party we were having. It’s not often we take a full Saturday off, but I’m so glad we did.
The girls really loved getting into the thrill of the summer games. I loved that with the help of CVS’ Gold Emblem Abound products, I spent zero time in the kitchen, except when squeezing lemon into my Firefly concoction. It was a fun-filled day of team spirit and family time. And it really doesn’t get any better than that!
Are you into watching all the fun going down in Rio?
Did you watch any events this weekend?
Last night we watched on one of my favorites, women’s gymnastics floor routines, and the girls LOVED it. They were somersaulting and dancing all over. I wanted to snap pictures put since Kaitlyn is potty-training herself (AKA NAKED), I had to refrain. Haha.

What a fun way to celebrate the Olympics! And so stress free since it was all last minute! We watched some of the swimming—IMPRESSIVE!

Looks like the Olympics, and CVS doing all the work, made for one fun time. We only caught some of the swimming. Ledecky was unreal!

My husband keeps trying to change the channel and he gets quite the stink eye from me. It’s only on every four years. He needs to slow his role. I’m loving the olympics so far.
Brittany Dixon says
Haha- I love it! We never have the TV on during the day and it’s been on nonstop with the Olympics! But like you said, it’s only 4 years, so I’m rolling with it. It’s so much fun to watch all the different competitions and to see the girls get into it too!

I’m a little crazy when it comes to the women’s gymnastics. My Husband says I need to watch it alone cause I’m so focused and may snap at anyone who tries to talk to me. Hey it’s only once every four years …
These activities look like so much fun and a great way to get the kids into the events. My daughter had to have her leo on and mimic all the dance moves of the girls on the floor. So much fun!

Looks like you guys had a blast! The girls will have that memory forever. I wouldn’t beat yourself up for having the TV on all day… looks like they were pretty active! š
Good luck w/ the potty training!

I wanted to catch a little bit of everything, but all we managed to catch was some volleyball. We get cable with an antenna, and it can be a little temperamental. I do love watching gymnastics, though!
Brittany Dixon says
We have an antenna too and when a storm rolled in it cut off one of the bike races right near the end. David was running around trying to get it to pick it back up, which luckily it did- haha! It was pretty funny though:)

I find this honestly so hard to believe considering I’ve read your very stringent rules on TV for your kids.

I’m all about the Olympics right now!!
