Hey David,
Remember when the only pictures of your birthday were blurry snapshots from the bar at 2am?
Now they’re posed, self-timed family pictures at 6pm.
Remember when you’d get an entire cake that you could snack on for days?
Now it’s two lonely slices, to be mostly devoured by an excited three-year-old, because your wife sees no need for extra cake to be hanging around the house (buzzkill).
Remember when the focus was all on you as you tore through your gifts?
Now you must relinquish the joy of opening presents to your oldest that keeps singing happy birthday so she can move on to the good stuff (cake).
Remember when your new shiny toy was yours, all yours, to keep in pristine condition?
Now the brand new, out-of-the-box gift has smudgy, grubby little finger prints on it within a minute of opening.
Remember when the celebration began with a 9pm pregame party?
Now it winds down at about that time after bath, story time and an hour of playing your guitar in your new (supportive) slippers.
Remember when you got to sleep in the next morning?
HAHAHAHA.
…
Remember when birthdays were even sweeter than they are now?
…me neither, babe, me neither.
…
What year was your best birthday?
Why?

Haha, this is fantastic. It is amazing how much our lives change. But that is why we always hear those gentle reminders to live in the moment because these sweet birthdays with little ones on our shoulders will soon pass as well.

I agree 1000% – birthdays are SO. MUCH. MORE. FUN. with kiddos. Renews the real meaning and excitement that birthdays should all be about! Happy Birthday David!

Looks like a great birthday celebration! 🙂 One of my favorite birthdays was last year. I was traveling to Memphis for work and got to spend it with my grandparents (we are really close despite the distance)!

Sweet post 🙂 Happy Birthday David! It’s my sister’s birthday today too! I smiled at the part about having slices of cake instead of the whole thing. I should have done the same…Greg’s birthday was last week and I made him his favorite coconut cake (three layers by the way). But then he had his wisdom teeth out the next day and couldn’t eat it the rest of the week. So I was left with it taunting me every day and could not resist. It was so good, but so bad. I did freeze some of it so he could enjoy more after he healed. A couple slices are the way to go 🙂

This was great. I laughed out loud at the slippers part because we have about five pairs around our house at all times which are always worn by the owner’s girls. Happy Birthday to David!

Happy Birthday to David! It’s so funny how different birthdays are with kids. I tend to make my husband not do much for my birthday, so instead my favorite birthday was actually my husband’s birthday a few years ago – we planned a belated honeymoon road trip over his birthday weekend so that he could go deep sea fishing on his big day and the whole trip was amazing. I’m looking forward to those road trips with the kiddos in the future. 😉

I have two kids that make birthday’s so much fun. My littlest turned 3 this past weekend and we have a tradition of taking them on a small vacation for their big day. That stems from my mom’s tradition when I was younger and I must say my best birthday was the sweet 16. We went to the mall of america and had so much fun…GLAMOUR SHOTS included. This year we did Lake Tahoe for a week for my daughters and in just a few weeks we will be heading to the Jelly Belly Factory for my son’s 5th. I prefer to give experiences instead of presents!
