What {we…still} Ate Wednesday

by Brittany on August 17, 2011 · 33 comments

I know, I know, I can’t start saying ‘I’m stillllllll pregnant’ yet.  I still have 2 weeks and 6 days until my official due date, but sometimes I feel like this child could pop out at any minute :)

Breakfast

…was enjoyed al fresco! The mornings have felt amazing here, so I finally enjoyed a little outside time without wanting to go jump in the lake.  Koda liked the bonus playtime, too!

Breakfast was 1/2 a whole wheat Thomas bagel, toasted with a thin schmear of veggie cream cheese.  Then I topped it with some baby spinach leaves and an egg that was scrambled with onions, peppers and spinach.  A cup of decaf of the side with Breve Cream.

Chobani Champions were on sale at the grocery store, so I’ve resorted back to Honey-nana with chia seeds, served by the awesome diaper cake Hubb’s work partner, Jackie, made for Baby D!

and a bit later across town… a tiny apple, too!

Lunch

Nothing too fancy- a romaine and spinach salad with peppers, onion and cucumber, topped with a Morningstar Farms veggie burger and a drizzle of Newman’s Light Balsamic, of course. Love that dressing!

Clearly that wasn’t enough to satiate me for long, so I threw in a PB&J half bagel, too.  PB&J mixed prior to application… as if there is any other way!

Puffins! They didn’t have the peanut butter variety, but the plain still offer a satisfying crunch.  With organic 2% milk. I’ve loved milk lately.

Dinner

An odd, but delicious, combo.  I pounded some chicken and topped it with a mixture of goat cheese, bacon, scallions and spinach, then baked it in the oven until cooked through and the cheese was melty.  Served with the Summer Vegetable Barley Salad and oven baked sweet potato fries. YUM.

I continued my new nightly tradition of 2 cups of raspberry leaf tea (it helps strengthen the uterus for easier delivery!)

I ate my Juice Plus Gummies and split the last Snicker’s Ice Cream bar with Hubbs.  Those are dangerous things to have around the house ;)

What is your favorite ice cream treat?

Do you prefer a bowl? A bar? A cone?

I usually like cones, but these Snickers Bars are quickly rising to the top!

Battle of the Bacons

by Brittany on May 20, 2011 · 24 comments

Every once in a while I like to look a little deeper into the reasoning why some foods are considered ‘obviously’ more healthy than others.  I really enjoyed doing this with potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Today, I want to tackle another food battle- BACON.

I love the salty crunch of bacon.  I don’t eat it very often, but every few weeks I’ll pick up some Hormel Natural Choice bacon and give my breakfast a flavor boost with the salty, deliciousness known as bacon.  However, most health conscious people have switched to eating turkey bacon.  When asked why, they most always respond because it’s better for you.  But is it?

Regular Bacon
70 6g 2g 220mg 4g
Hormel Natural Choice Regular
Bacon
80 7g 2.5g 360mg 5g

Above is my breakdown of 2 turkey bacon varieties and 2 regular bacon varieties.  Between brands, amounts of fat, saturated fat and sodium (& taste!) can differ.

What’s your personal view on what makes something ‘healthier’ than another?

If it’s fat content, you’ll probably go for Applegate Farm’s Turkey Bacon over regular bacon, and save 3-4 g of fat.

If you’re me, I like that Hormel Natural doesn’t have nitrates or nitrites added. Nitrates/nitrites are used as a preservative and have been linked to cancer in laboratory rats.  I try to avoid foods with this preservative as much as possible (it’s also why I also am not eating hot dogs right now), especially now that I’m prego.

Overall I advise people to look closely at the label of the brand of bacon they are choosing, rather than just noticing whether or not it’s turkey bacon or regular bacon.  Decide what aspect of health (calories, saturated fat, preservatives) is most important to you and decide which is the best choice for you.

On a completely non-health related note, if I’m going to eat bacon, I want the REAL thing.  Turkey bacon, in my opinion, just doesn’t have the same delicious flavor and satisfying crunch that real bacon has.

So you tell me which team you play for- Team Turkey Bacon or Team Original Bacon?

Light ‘n Tasty Potato Leek Soup

May 17, 2011

Thank you so much to everyone that provided a guess as to what my mystery CSA item was yesterday.  After from hearing from a few people that their best guess was ‘leeks’, I decided the vegetable from there on would officially be considered a leek. A purple leek. Because those exist? Anyways… Determined not to [...]

What (we) Ate Wednesday

April 27, 2011

Thank you so much for all your sweet comments on yesterday’s post.  I promise I wasn’t intending on fishing for compliments, but you all made me feel so special.  Maybe it’s just my crazy hormones, but I might have teared up once or twice reading your kind words. The hungry belly was back in full [...]

Bacon?? On a healthy eating post??

May 19, 2010

Yup.  Good morning blog friends! I haven’t had bacon in forever, but the other day at the grocery store I developed a craving for it.  It’s unusual because I don’t typically like to eat pork products (pork tenderloins, pork chops, etc).  Something about it creeps me out.  Possibly the fact that I used to have [...]
