Stayin’ So Fresh and So Clean Clean in the Summer Heat

I can see summer peaking at me from around the corner. Though I’m excited about the farmers markets, berries and fresh tomatoes beginning to grow on my patio tomato plant, I know this mean humidity, sweat and bugs, too.

This year with the hot temperatures, I hope to de-mom myself a little bit. What does that mean? It means getting rid of this hair DON’T I’ve been sporting:

mom hair DON'T

I’m hoping to do better at embracing my natural waves and letting my hair do it’s thang this summer. (Wavy/curly girls, please share your tips!)

I’m also looking forward to updating my wardrobe and wearing more than my typical mom uniform, which is either  yoga gear or shorts and a t-shirt. Proof:

mom outfit

Poor, David. I used to try and doll myself up a bit more. (Side note, he actually loves me like this. I’m a lucky gal<3).

I love my big, beautiful closet, but together David and I barely fill up half of it. We’re not clothes people, though we could both totally use some sprucing up. A new dress or two would go a long way in my wardrobe.

But underneath my mom clothes and half-pulled through ponytail (hey, it was cool in 7th grade!), at least I’m clean. And I smell nice, too.

For a long time now, I’ve been a Dove product user. I buy their soap in bulk.

Dove Bar Soap

I use their deodorant to stay feeling fresh.

Dove Fresh deordorant

I like their message of true beauty and building self-esteem in girls.

So when they offered to send me their new deodorant to try out, it was a no-brainer. Yes, please!

Dove Clear Tone

Dove Clear Tone innovative technology reduces underarm irritation, bumps and darkness. Luckily, I have pretty good armpits to begin with.

Fact: I’ve actually been complimented on my armpits before and asked if I actually grow hair in them because they are so smooth. Some girls have long, pretty legs. I have nice armpits. SCORE.

So the real question to me, is can it keep me feeling fresh during my sweatiest times? Only one one to really test this… hot yoga.

Awkward, poorly-lit, self-timer pose… GO!

Dove Clear Tone test

I finally made it back to a yoga class yesterday (Thank you Charlotte Family Yoga, it felt sooooo good) and put Dove Clear Tone to the test. And afterwards…

Dove Clear Tone held up

Still so fresh. In my armpits at least. Next time I should cover my body in it because we all know you don’t just sweat in your armpits during hot yoga.

But the Dove held up beautifully and made me feel comfortably clean enough to hit up the grocery store afterwards. And that’s saying something.

What product do you rely on to keep you feeling fresh in the summertime?

As part of the DailyBuzz Healthy Living Program, I received free Clear Tone Deodorant and a stipend from Dove. However, my opinions are entirely my own

Thanks for another smile this morning! You always have a way of doing that to me :)

I agree with you on the message that Dove sends out to girls. I had never thought though to buy only that product. Good idea! You stand by what you believe it.

who needs long legs anyway? :)
Sarah wrote a wonderful post on curly hair, in case you haven´t read it yet.
my trick is to wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner, then brush it, apply a tad of coconut oil into my tips, then squeeze my hair with my hands and let it air-dry. the easiest and fastest way for me and I always get comments on how nice my curls look :)

You are so brave to go “au natural” with your hair this summer! I have long, thick red hair – that I flat iron EVERYDAY. I hate all the work – but I love how it looks afterwards. I’ve tried embracing my crazy frizzy, wavy hair. It’s very hard! I think you’ve inspired me to give it another go. I hope you get some good ideas on how to manage it and share them on your blog! BTW – I would die for your closet!!! =D

I know this sounds maybe tmi but I deff feel as though my armpits got darker after pregnancy. I’m only 11 weeks out and my linea nigra is fading… Now that I’m wearing more revealing clothes I notice it and I’m not liking it! Makes me wanna skip overhead triceps at them gym u know what I mean? Haha. Maybe ill have to try this!

Okay, I am insanely jealous of your armpits! Not even kidding!!

I use NutriBiotic’s Mango Melon deodorant. It smells great, is local to me, and is aluminum and parabean free. I’d love to use all the other awesome deodorants, but they all contain aluminum from being antiperspirant. :(

Aveda hair products rock! They actually do what they claim, and aren’t too pricey (and last forever). I LOVE the “be curly enhancing lotion” followed by a bit of the “confixor.” The two work awesome together on wet hair. No frizz and fro, nice waves/curls, no hard crusty, weighed down hair, and easy for summer maintenance!

Never thought I’d be envious of an armpit! It’s a lovely one :) Now I feel like I need to go google ways to make mine look better! hehe

Nice pits 😉 believe it or not, but i don’t actually use anything on my underarms. i don’t really sweat that much (outside of working out) & i rarely smell. my pits get irritated easily so i just stopped using anything.

i can totally relate to the whole “mom” wardrobe debacle. i’ve got a 3yr old & a 3mo old & all i want is to be comfy! lots of stretchy pants going on over here! a far cry from my pre-kid, fashionista days…

but the curly/wavy hair stuff i’ve got figured out! the best, most helpful tip i can give you is make sure you have a hairstylist who knows how to cut & style curly hair. that’s the best thing you can do. in terms of products, it’s really going to depend on your hair’s texture & curl type. my hair is thick, a little dry & slightly course w/ medium curls. i use Paul Mitchell Sculpting foam & Round Trip serum. the serum is great b/c it’s not silicone based & won’t make your hair greasy, no matter how much you use. but it gives you soft, defined curls :)

I love, love, love Dove products! It’s the only soap I’ll use. TMI, but my pits get pretty rank in the summer, so I have to use a stronger deodorant.

Also, one my first week of stay at home mom in waiting duty, I’ve been rocking the tank tops and yoga pants! Granted, that’s probably because my wardrobe is down to nothing in my last few days/weeks of pregnancy…

You are adorable. And your armpits really ARE so pretty!

I can’t use Dove because it makes me itchy. Even the sensitive skin kind. Itchy pits are annoying to say the least.

I use Arm & Hammer Natural instead. It’s paraben, aluminum, and itch free! It’s not as natural as Tom’s of Maine (it still contains some chemicals) but I’ve found that it works much better that way. I think it’s a happy medium.

Dove makes an unscented deodorant that actually works (I’m really sensitive to perfumes) and that says something about their products.

I never thought I’d type this on a comment section, but you do have nice armpits. Mine get shaved once a day and its still not enough. Sigh.

    Hi, Brittany.
I second Michaela’s response above (third). Sarah at Peas and Thank You did a wonderful post on embracing her curls and gives great advice. Anyway, I don’t use anything with waxes, silicones, or alcohol. I do use shampoo and conditioner every day, but some curlies wash with conditioner only. After I wash, I use a light weight gel, and air dry. If my hair is not dry by the time I leave the house, I will blow dry it the rest of the way. I only use a blow dryer if it is almost completely dry to prevent frizz. I will “scrunch” my hair after it’s try to get any hardness out caused by the gel. I haven’t straighten my hair in about 10 years. Once my 11-year-old daughter had enough hair to see that it was curly too, I stopped. It just didn’t feel right to be doing it and I worried about sending her the wrong message.

This was my first post, so I wanted to let you know that I love your blog (and pretty pits! ha ha). I enjoy reading it every morning. Keep up the good work.

    Dove and Palm Oil:

I used to love Dove products because they smelled awesome and had decent campaigns. But since finding out about the palm oil and rain forests, I have boycotted them and try to find out where my products come from. I’ve since cut out conditioner and body wash and use local-made soaps and shampoos and they smell just as decent :)

    Curly hair girl over here!
The trick is to make sure your hair gets totally wet in the shower. I use a wide toothed comb. shampoo it thoroughly so your hair starts to feel curlier in the shower, then get a good conditioner. maybe condition it twice. after the shower i take the comb through it again, once or twice, then I use a generic styling creme (right now bumble & bumble) and a curl enhancer spray (i have always, always used frizz ease curl spray). The trick is to NOT TOUCH IT. Don’t think about it, don’t look in the mirror until it dries. This is literally the hardest part. When it dries i drop my head upside down and scratch up the roots to make sure it’s got some bounce to it and maybe sprintz with curl spray again. That’s it. and remember if it looks unruly — EVERYONE APPRECIATES A CRAZY CURL. :) sorry for the novel. love your blog!

How do you get your pits so pretty and stubble-less?! I have stubble approximately 4.6 seconds after I shave my pits. haha!

My hairdresser told me to do this and I swear I’ve noticed a difference. When you get out of the shower and dry your hair, don’t use a towel. Use an old 100% cotton t-shirt that’s nice and soft. I’ve been doing this since December and my hair is much less static-y and dry. Plus a t-shirt isn’t as heavy on the head a towel!

I’ve been using Moroccan oil on my hair for a couple of years. Yes, it’s pricey, about $30 a bottle, but a bottle lasts me six months. My hair is much easier to manage with it (I have frizzy, curly, dry hair) and I really notice when I DON’T use it for a few days.

Congrats on embracing the hair! :)

This curly/wavey haired girl LOVES Aveda hair products. Their curl line is amazing. I recently startered using their Be Curly, Style Prep and it’s amazing. Best part: if you rewet your hair it reactivates!
