After leaving Oktoberfest, we hopped a train to Austria, I was ready for some different food. But being that Salzburg isn’t too far from Munich ( a 2 hour train ride), I didn’t have high hopes. We arrived, unloaded at the hotel and asked the front desk about where to go for lunch. She directed us to the only place she knew that was open… an authentic German cuisine restaurant. We walked there and when arrived I looked up at it with defeated eyes.
Hubbs took pity on me and agreed to wonder around for another restaurant. After finding a few that were closed, we stumbled across a small place that served ITALIAN food & WINE! I’ve never been so happy!
I devoured this and thus began my love affair with Italian food… in Austria. Italian places were prevalent all around Austria. I don’t know why, but I wasn’t asking questions… just savoring 🙂

I was on a delightful white carb binge…. and I couldn’t be happier!
Not only was the food wonderful, the sights were beautiful in Salzburg. It is the home of The Sound of Music and the birth place of Mozart… and they are very proud of both of them (as they should be).
I think my favorite place was Salzburg, but I’m not sure if it had more to do with the incredible views and cute, historic city… or the fact that my stomach was finally happy again 🙂
Tomorrow I’ll sum up my most and least favorite parts of all the food, sights, activities, then next week I’ll be back to blogging as usual. Thank so much for indulging my fun of reliving my first trip to Europe!
When you travel… do you eat only the local cuisine? Or do you search out foods that you recognize?

I prefer to “Eat (Like A) Local” when I travel…but I would have made an exception for that meal!!!! Oh my GOLL…the gnocchi….the pasta del mar….
And I am now officially going to call them shrimpS, too. 🙂

To be honest I travel so rarely that I don’t know how to answer the question! I would prefer to eat local foods — only because I can’t get them at home. Plus I think it adds to the travel/vacation aspect by trying new things.

Like Holly, I so rarely get to travel anywhere! When I did go to Russia the only option was to eat what they ate (though we did visit McDonald’s when we were in Moscow).

I try to eat local when I travel, but often do get to a point where my stomach can’t handle it either and usually just end up going to grocery stores for produce, bread, etc. instead of full eating meals.

The Italian food looks so yummy! I try to eat the local food when I travel, but if I’m not feeling it, I will eat whatever looks good to me. Did you get a chance to go to the opera while you were in Austria??

Salzburg is my absolute FAVORITE place that I visited when I backpacked Europe last year, visiting 11 countries in one month. I love the green rolling hills, river, and the castle on the hill overlooking the town! I also love how you can walk anywhere, buy a beer and drink it on the street, and visit the gardens that are in the Sound of Music! I am happy that you are there!

I’m slowly transitioning to being brave and eating what the locals eat when I travel. Lately that only means gravy on my fries when I go up to BC. I can handle that 😀
Back in 2004 when I went to Spain and Portugal, I was NOT an adventurous eater. I didn’t do seafood either. I ate ham and cheese sandwiches for every meal for two weeks. Seriously, I am not kidding.
On my honeymoon in 2006 I was really brave and ate the Cook Island’s specialty dish, Ika Mata, that was sorta like tuna sashimi in coconut sauce.

I try to eat local cusine but with my stomach issues that can be difficult at times 😉 I wish I could so I tend to stick with just fruit and veggies while I am traveling.

Italian foods looks delicious; definietly one of my faves! But I’m not a big traveler, so couldn’t say about the local versus what I’m accustomed to.

wow it was like Salzburg was an italian lover’s heaven…the food looks amazing!! I bet you felt so much better when you were no longer in the land of sausages!
