Friday! Can I get an WHOOP?! My weekend started early last night with a trip to Birkdale’s eeZ Fusion with these lovely ladies-
Being able to chat in a non-play-group setting is always a treat. We get to talk about anything we want!… though topics do usually end up coming back to the funny things our kiddos have done or said lately. It’s a hard habit to break but man did I get to laugh a lot.
I tried a new roll (and snapped a less than stellar picture) on a recommendation.
I wish I could remember which one it was exactly, but it was rice-less, rolled in cucumber and contained a ton of fish with a tuna and avocado salad in the middle. I basically licked the plate clean. Delicious!
In other happenings, things are slow rolling around here, which I’m enjoying. It’s giving me time to think about how to get Kaitlyn on somewhat of a schedule (3 months tomorrow!), how to kick things up a notch so I don’t have to suck in to button my jeans and just enjoying these last weeks of summer.
On that note, ladies and gentleman, may I present you with the Dixon Family’s Great Garden Haul of 2014…
Ta-daaaaaaaaaaaaa. Also known as the world’s most expensive tomato.
She rinsed off the above little beauty and chomped right through it. I really would love to do a little fall garden because Hailey loves it so much. What does one grow in the fall? (Or attempt to grow in my case)
Speaking of fall, have I mentioned we are getting a screened-in porch put on next month? David and I are obsessed with them and after 4 years on going back and forth about it, we’re pulling the trigger. I’m giddy at the idea of enjoying NC fall weather on the porch while relaxing on this…
Well a girl can dream right? Anyone else obsessed with everything found HERE?
In the spirit of keeping this post erratic, here are three other posts to check out…
Five Unexpected Things I Learned From Intuitive Eating by Maria – I was nodding along through this entire post, especially number 1.
Curly Hair Must Haves by Molly – Along with needing about 4 inches cut off my hair, I also really need to learn how to embrace my curl. If these tips can make me look anything like Molly, I’m in.
Simple Summer Chickpea Salad by Char – I like simple recipes, I like chickpeas and I like Char. Check it out!
Have a wonderful weekend!
What do you grow in your fall garden?
What have you been reading lately?
(links welcomed- I need reading material for breastfeeding!)
Kimberly @ Healthy Strides says
I always feel guilty when I have girls night and I talk about Miles but sometimes, he’s just so funny and work is so boring.
I read “Garlic and Sapphires” on vacation, and it was really good. It’s a memoir from a former New York Times restaurant critic.

I’m no BF’ing expert, but I attended a LLL meeting a month or so ago to learn from other moms. Everyone there recommended LLL’s book called ‘The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding’. It’s not a quick read-through, unfortunately, more of a pick-and-choose chapters kinda book and great resource.

I read that one while pregnant with H- good info for sure!

I need to embrace my curly hair more! These days if it is curly, it just means that I was too lazy (or busy!) to blow dry it.
Try growing greens in the fall! They are so easy (usually). I plan to do rainbow chard, kale, and lettuces (butter lettuce, mixed romaine and arugula are my faves). I have never had good luck with spinach, though. Mine always dies. It’s a shame too because I eat a ton of spinach. Maybe it’s the variety I am planting?
Also – Plant a few cloves of garlic around them too. You can use the leaves from the garlic for seasoning (they taste kind of like green onions), plus they are a natural pest repellant. You can harvest the garlic next spring. I may also try spraying my greens with basic H2 this year.

Love the garlic tip- thank you!

I just read the book “If I Stay” and then started its sequel “Where She Went” last night. I’m excited to see the movie that goes with! I think it comes out next weekend.

Ooh, a porch is exciting! We have a screened in porch off the back of our house that we want to redo (you have to go through my office to get to it and we hardly use it) – it involves adding a door to the outside and possibly converting into a sunroom space for more year round use, but like you we’ll probably sit on the idea for 4 years before pulling the trigger!
As for fall gardening, now’s a great time to plant any cold weather crops – kale, swiss chard, broccoli, cabbage, winter squashes, possibly lettuce where you are since it’s warmer a bit longer. We just planted most of the above a few weeks ago and we’re in a slightly cooler climate so you should be fine to do it now.
Have a great weekend!
Brittany Dixon says
Do you plant them from seeds? And keep them inside first? Or just seed the garden? THANKS! 🙂
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Yep- all of those can be planted by seed and it’s warm enough to put them directly into the soil outside. You could get small broccoli/cabbage/cauliflower plants to speed the process up!

Gardening season pretty much ends with Labor Day around here, so I don’t think we’ll be planning for a fall garden. I missed the summer session, too, due to procrastinating, but there’s always next year. Your tomato looks beautiful. It’s a start!
My MIL lives in Chapel Hill and they just got a screened in porch this summer and she LOVES it. I’m sure you’ll get lots of use of yours as soon as it’s done!

actually that pic looks delicious! i want it! oh what a beautiful porch setup!
Katie Harding says
Totally envious over your screened in porch, that is the one thing that I would LOVE to add to our home. I for sure do not have a green thumb but I think herbs would be easy to keep up in the fall, not sure about anything else!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
I can’t wait to have a house one day so that I can have a garden…and screened in porch! Hope you have a great weekend!

I’ve been keeping up with all your posts but never comment since I usually read with a baby in one arm! Sooo nice you get to get out with your friends! I miss sushi – i need to find a good place. My sister just started watching Elliotte a few mornings a week so we get to go to the gym! Just started this morning. I told Dustin that even though I miss her, it makes me feel like a real human again! Oh my gosh, a screen porch will be amazing in the fall! Ours isn’t screened and I always always wish it was! So fun! So eager to hear what kind of schedule you’re planning for Kaitlyn – growth spurts and just life disruptions have left us with pretty much no rhyme or reason lately. Her sleep is all over the place! So nice to keep up with you guys since they’re the same age!
Brittany Dixon says
I love seeing your pics of E on instagram- so fun that they are the same age! And yes, I know what you mean about feeling human again. That’s how I feel after a workout or a girls night our or anything that doesnt involved wiping bottoms, feeding kids and attending to a million little toddler needs too 😉 I’m so glad you’re able to get to the gym!
Maria says
Ooh, thanks again for sharing my random thoughts about food 🙂 I have more that I need to share. I actually write a private blog about IE because I’m really excited about it. I’ll share it with you sometime if you promise not to think I’m insane. I’m actually become to passionate about it, I can easily see how women make it their career.
A screened in porch is my American Dream! So excited for you! I told my husband that when we build a house someday (also apart of the dream) that I want a huge wrap around porch with a screened in porch and shoot, I even want a second floor porch. Porches are the best.
Have a great weekend!

I cannot wait until we’re permanently situated so I can attempt to grow a garden. I’m pretty sure with my black thumb, I would only yield a mutant tomato though haha. And maybe that’s why we still rent? Just kidding. I’m sure if I did my homework I could yield at least something!
Thanks for the chickpea salad shout out! I just made it again the other day and it was just as delicious as the first time!
I have a whole bunch of books checked out from the library but have yet to pull the trigger on really starting one! I gotta at least get through one before I return them! Especially since reading has slipped away from me, but something I want to get back in to!

Rainbow swiss chard and radishes grow really well in the northwest fall weather. And mint… mint is basically a weed so it grows anywhere, all the time.

Can I come live on your porch when it’s done!?
