Wow, what a weekend! On a whim my best friend, Alexis, booked a flight to Charlotte from Boston. I like to think it was just to see me and not because she was craving Mexican food and Boston doesn’t have white cheese dip.
…I’ll wait for that to sink in. No cheese dip? So sad.
It turned into such a fun weekend. Hailey loved having an extra playmate,
and I loved having a best girlfriend here to catch up with.
Friday night we went out to Corkscrew at Birkdale Village to sip wine, talk about life and devour a cheese plate.
We moved on to Bonefish Grill for dinner.
While splitting the Bang Bang Shrimp I was saddened to discover it isn’t as good as I remember. The shrimp sat heavy on our stomachs, so we ended up with a light dinner and wine.
I usually rest and soak up family time on weekends, but with A-lex in town, I wanted to take advantage of her Crossfit knowledge so Saturday morning we hit the gym.
She led me through a high intensity cardio interval (squat jumps, burpees, high knees, mountain climbers, etc) that pushed me out of my comfort zone. Then we hit the weights. I haven’t lifted heavy weights in so long that by the time we left, I had Jell-O arms. Good thing Hailey can walk!
Saturday night we satisfied our craving for Mexican food.
Even now on Monday morning I want to jump into that picture and eat it all.
Saturday night we relaxed because we were up early to venture to Y2 yoga.
I’ve been wanting to take Jen’s class for so long and Sunday morning I finally had the opportunity to sweat profusely and push myself for 90 blissful minutes.
Before arriving, I was terrified of 90 minutes. I’m usually more of a 60 minute class kind of gal, but Jen is truly an awesome teacher. Class moved along at a nice speed that kept me focused on my poses and not on the clock.
I could feel it biting me again… that pesky yoga bug. It has me mentally rearranging my schedule to figure out how I can practice more often. If you have a chance to take one of Jen’s classes. Do it. You won’t regret it.
After class we showered and Alexis, Lauren, Jen and I grabbed brunch at Nolen Kitchen.
I couldn’t help but indulge in an extra spicy bloody Mary. It hit the spot. As did my eggs Florentine benedict (2 poached eggs, spinach, ciabatta, herbed goat cheese and mushrooms).
Great food, good times with friends and some quality exercise made it a great weekend! In fact, I’m thinking about switching things up to include weekend workouts from now on… maybe.
Do you work out on weekends or rest up for the week?
Ashley M. [at] (never home)maker says
Looks like a great weekend, Brittany! That pesky yoga bug has bitten me too. It feels so good, whether in a class or in my living room!
Brittany says
I wish I enjoyed it as much at home. I’m such a studio junkie! I think I need the extra pressure so I don’t just hit the off button 😉
Erin @Axell's Kitchen says
I sometimes do, but am normally to busy hanging out with the fam..and I looove bang bang shrimp- I actually found a healthier version of it on Pinterest I want to try!
Lee says
Wait, they don’t have cheese dip in Boston? What?
I really enjoy working out on the weekends. I don’t feel the time constraints that I do during the week.
Brittany says
She said they couldn’t even find a good hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. They found a nice one that served yellow cheese dip. Totally not the same! 🙂
Elizabeth @ My Neon Running Shoes says
I like to take advantage of the weekends and use my husband as a babysitter while I get in a good workout!
Karen says
All that food looks amazing. I usually workout on the weekends. Saturdays are my cardio days and Sundays are my yoga days. I take off one day during the week and do lots of stretching on Sundays with yoga. Have a great week!!
Lizzy says
They DO have queso or cheese dip in Boston! So don’t worry your friend came to see you.
Brittany says
Where?! This news will make her day 🙂
Kaitlyn @Keeping up with Kaitlyn says
Sounds like an amazing weekend with friends and I’d like to eat up that Mexican food too! So yummy!

The local Crossfit gym is the place to be in my town. How did you like it? I would love to try it out but it’s pricey. $150 a week!
This weekend we had my daughter’s 1st birthday party! Even in the rain, we had a blast. 🙂
Brittany says
I always like to try something different. I’d love to try the one near me, but I’ve heard crazy things about the prices, too, so well see. $150 a week is utter nonsense!
And happy HAPPY birthday to your sweet daughter 🙂
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
That sounds like such a fantastic weekend! I wish I had a good friend who did Crossfit, I’d love someone to show me the ropes. 🙂 Glad you had some quality girl time and a break from the normal routine!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
What a fun weekend! There’s nothing like catching up (in person) with one of your best friends!
And I work out during the weekends and usually for a little bit longer….since time isn’t as much of the essence!
Brittany says
By the way, I told Alexis I “knew” you and she was like “oh my gosh, she’s so nice!” #smallworld 🙂

I once studied abroad in London and it didn’t hit me until I was there that not every country in the world has a Mexican restaurant/taco truck on every corner. It was a rough couple of months without cheese dip, salsa, or carnitas.
Glad you got your fix this weekend.

Looks like a great weekend!!

That’s great you got to hang with your bestie and do yoga! Sounds perfect! I need to get back in gear, I didn’t work out at all.
Kelli H says
Looks like a very fun weekend!
I usually do a low intensity work out on the weekends like long walks or hikes.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
What a fun weekend! Girl time is the best. Weekends are usually a nice balance of exercise and rest. Saturdays are usually pretty active with a workout thrown in there, and Sundays are my veg days. 🙂
Susan @ Real Life Travels says
I thought the same thing about the bang bang shrimp, very disappointing!!
Maria says
So true. I can never find white cheese sauce in Mexican restaurants anywhere but the South. Booking my flight to Charlotte now.
I love having friends who would rather hit the gym with you instead of camp out at home. I always workout alone, so having something there to motivate and talk to just makes it (more?) fun.
Belinda says
Oh my goodness! I was NEVER a weekend workout gal but that’s all changed now. I used to think “The weekends are my fun time! Why would I ruin them with exercise??” But I think when I started to see workouts as fun I opened up to the idea of working out on the weekends. I love all the extra time. And it’s so much fun to go to a sat morning class with some gal pals!
Matt @ The Athlete's Plate says
Bonefish Grill is delicious!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Mexican food is just so darn good. I think that I could probably eat it every single day! 😉
Nicole @ Fruit 'N' Fitness says
What a fun weekend! I like to do my long run on Saturdays and then a short workout or walk with Bentley on Sunday. I try to use tuesday or wednesday as my full day off because they are the busiest for me.
Liz @ iheartvegetables says
It sounds like you had a fun (and active!!) weekend! That’s so awesome!

I can imagine that fear of 90 minutes. Like me when I first saw the Personal trainer 3 weeks back. That intense fear of not knowing what to expect.
Glad you had a ball with the Yoga and with your friend.
Whitney says
I LOVE working out on the weekends! I let myself sleep in a little on Saturdays and then hit the gym. I don’t feel rushed and it sets the tone for the rest of my day! You should stick with it 🙂
Amanda Perry @ Sistas of Strength says
I usually work out on Saturday morning and then chill out on Sundays!!! 🙂
Lauren K says
This was so much fun and I hope we can do it again!! I love working out on the weekends because I actually feel pretty rested. Plus, it helps that Jeff joins me so it’s something we can do together!
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
Oh my GOLL, YES–WHY is white queso only a southern ‘thang’? We ate it all through college, and I believe it actually was the first time (well, times…multiple) that I had queso at all. When I went to visit friends elsewhere in the country, I was so confused by what the yellowy orange goo was that I was presented. [The Texas version of Velveeta and Rotell is acceptable only because it’s so unequivocally Texas.]
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
OK, so I got so caught up in the queso thing that I hadn’t even read the rest of the post before commenting. Oops. 🙂
I am LOVING yoga right now. What style was the class you took? I tend to work out almost every day in some capacity, but varying runs with yoga and elliptical/TV watching. I really need someone to push me in the weight lifting arena…
Jennifer {Pure & Simple Organizing} says
Oh my that brunch looks amazing! Where is Nolan’s kitchen?
And your shirt from Friday is adorable!
