Gooooooood…. wait, what day is it? I’m so thrown off. I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day weekend and got to do something fun to soak in the last days of summer!! Ok, you officially have until the 21st, but fall will be here before we know it. 😀
I actually think fall arrived Saturday morning. It was cool. The kind of cool that has you wanting to cozy up in an over-sized sweatshirt and sip hot coffee on the porch. I thought it was only fitting with the return of college football returning the same day. Unfortunately, along with a Bulldawg win, Saturday brought these my way:
and a couple of these:
And what fun is football without a couple beers, right? Right. Although along with beers, throughout the weekend I indulged in a margarita (or two) and one of these, as well:
Although there were a few healthier choices, like delicious homemade guacamole, hummus, carrots & celery and this grilled chicken wrap (minus the fries):
…the chili, pizza, biscuits, fish tacos, fries and adult beverages totally overtook the weekend. No, I’m not kidding… I consumed all of these over the past 3 days. Ugh.
It got me to thinking about why.
I think reason numero uno is lack of planning on my part. I knew we were going to have guests in town (we had 14.5 of us at the house total throughout the weekend… a 4-month-old counts as .5, right?) Check out this cutie… most precious, expressive baby ever:
I digress….
Although we had 14.5 people total, I didn’t know who was planning on showing up when. It was pretty much a rotating door of people throughout the weekend, which made it quite challenging to plan for. There were a couple impromptu runs to the grocery store, and when there are a lot of mouths to feed and little time to plan, I revert to quick ‘n easy… AKA grilling burgers, chili, and biscuits (not all at the same time ;)).
Reason number 2 that I feel so unhealthy after the weekend? Too much booze. It’s not that I was binge drinking and getting wasted-face (ohh… college… I totally didn’t take care of myself then….), but there was a pretty consistent stream of alcohol flowing through the party weekend… beer… margarita… bloody mary.
ENOUGH!
I never felt hungover, just a little run down, which may be why my throat isn’t feeling 100% this morning.
Reason number 3… lack of quality sleep. Between the beer and the late night sessions of Charades (oh yeah, we totally rocked the classic game of charades… it. was. awesome. I love charades, although when it comes to competition, I morph into Monica from FRIENDS immediately). But between the fun, sun, drinks and late night swims in the lake, I went to bed a lot later, and didn’t sleep as soundly.
But don’t get me wrong, I had a wonderful time this weekend! I got to hang out with my Bro & SIL (Sis-in-law)
Hung out with great friends:
Enjoyed some laughs:
Got in some exercise:
Played with 2 sweet pups:
And of course, rocked out on the lake!
It sure did feel good to start out this morning on a healthy note, though:
A refreshing mix of :
1 handful organic, frozen mixed berries
1/2 frozen organic banana
1 giant handful organic baby spinach
organic 1% milk
1/2 scoop protein powder
1/2 Tbsp Flax Seeds
All in a festive glass 🙂
To sum it up, I had a wonderful weekend, but I want to do a better job of living healthfully even on the wildest of weekends.
My goals for future party weekends:
1. Be prepared. Plan and have healthy foods on hand, prepared & ready to be munched on!
2. Limit alcohol consumption. Perhaps throw in a mocktail between cocktails?
3. Eat at home as much as much as possible during the weekend to maintain more control over food choices.
On your holiday weekends, do you stay healthy? Or do you splurge? What tips do you utilize to stay on track?
Lisa @ I'm an Okie says
Looks like an absolutely fun weekend! I mightve indulged quite a bit with all those guests too–I splurge on holiday weekends to be honest. And I think that’s ok. Enjoy yourself and get back on track!
PS–what kind of camera do you use? your pics look great.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!
So, lots of great food and alcohol over the weekend?? Yeah, me too, but I did pretty well for the most part. I tend to go overboard with the alcohol and food, but this weekend I think all of my previous experiences sort of taught me a lesson! I no longer need to continue drinking and/or eating to “have a good time”, and I’m slowly learning this more every year. It’s hard, especially when everyone around me is continuing to eat and drink, but focusing on family and friends is more important, right?!
Hope your detox plans are a success!!

I’m SO exhausted today too! It’s not pretty. At least we had good weekends…started off with a Georgia win! 😀

holy nachos! i agree, it’s soooo hard to eat healthy when you’re tired and even worse when you’re drinking! oh well, gotta live.
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
I’m totally with you on the overly indulgent weekend but also got in a lot of time with friends. I’m not that good in social situations – I think those are where I struggle the most. However, I think part of having a healthy lifestyle is having BALANCE and at least you got some exercise and enjoyed your weekend!
Rachel says
Sometimes having weekends like that are all part of the balance. It’s all about family, friends, good food and having fun. You don’t eat like that all the time so I think you’re covered. PS, that nacho thing looks friggin amazing and now I want nachos, BAD.
Samantha @ Health, Happiness & Skinny Jeans says
Its definitely tough to stay on track on long weekends or weekends away. I like tot hink that this is the balance part of a healthy lifestyle; that you get to have the occasional “I don’t care” kind of weekend and it all balances out from the rest of the days that are spent eating eating and being active.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
DROOL…i love football season, but there’s definitely a need to detox a little during the week! i never want to deprive myself of the foods i love during this time of the year, but there’s no reason to not eat really healthfully when football’s not on!
Nichole says
Partial to the photos, precious family.
Sorry you aren’t feeling so hot. We ALL have those moments. If anyone can regroup and recover, it’s you!
Ashley @ Cupcakes & Combat Boots says
I DEFINITELY splurged this weekend too! I had a big ole pile ‘o nachos just like you did and they were totally WORTH IT. 🙂 Football always makes me want to eat junk food, and I’m okay with it. If I’m going to eat crazy, unhealthy food I usually try to limit my intake of alcohol, or vice versa. It doesn’t always work out that way but this weekend I did pretty well in that regard. I chose the fattening food over the fattening alcohol! 🙂
Sarah for Real says
It’s all about planning for me (or lack thereof). Plus a little peer pressure goes a long way on holidays. I rely on portion control and balance things out where I can.
Lucky for me, I get these fabulous killer migraines when I have more than two drinks so that helps me limit alcohol. I always forget about a bloody mary! Those are at least half healthy, right?
Katie @ Healthy Heddleston says
I get too stressed out if I splurge too much during a holiday weekend. Luckily for me this weekend my husband and I had zero plans and we enjoyed lots of exercising paired with splurging on just an milkshake from the local homemade ice cream (I also made him an apple pie last night hehe).
I don’t like alcohol so I’m covered on that point.. but being prepared and getting enough sleep are so important too me! I hate being unprepared and eating out too much as restaurants.. I’d rather take the time and have big dinners ready to go at the house!
Melissa says
Looks like a lot of fun! I say splurge, but not every weekend. And maybe have a lighter breakfast if planning on going out to eat later on. Also, if drinking (which I rarely do) I have a glass of water in between all drinks.
TheHealthyApron` says
I try to eat as normal as I can on weekends and in fact, sometimes I end up eating less than I do throughout the week because I don’t get up as early. However, when going out to dinner or family parties, I try my best to nix the alcohol or limit it to one drink. I would rather splruge on dessert (but that’s just me). Anyway, sounds like the foods you are were delish. At least they looked like it! Enjoy and move on! Make it a healthier week!! 🙂
Shawnee says
Despite how you feel about the eats, it looks like you still had a great weekend.
Mo@MommyRD says
I admit I do indulge on holidays/holiday weekends. I too went a bit overboard this weekend, but you know what, that’s why we live healthy and make good choices the other 80-90% of the time.
Don’t be so hard on yourself. Letting go of to much control and rolling with the punches can be a great way to enjoy a diversion of routine. 🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Awww the babies expression is priceless!! Not the typical “googoo” kind of face, but precious none the less. 🙂
I usually stay fairly healthy on holiday weekends unless I absolutely can’t. I mean restaurants always have healthy options but other than that I’ll pack a bunch of bars or what not to munch on instead of fries. 😛
Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) says
Looks like a great weekend!
We tend to go out of town a lot of holidays and long weekends so we have little to no control over the food available at whoever’s house we are staying at. I usually try to load up on veggies and fruit before touching anything else – by the time I’m finished I’m pretty full and may only eat a few bites of the more unhealthy foods!
homecookedem says
I try my best to balance out my weekend splurges with some healthy meals thrown in there. For example, if I eat a bigger brunch, I’ll just have a small snack later in the day and then a regular size dinner. And if I find I’m splurging a lot, I’ll go on a walk to make myself feel a little better. But when it comes down to it, as long as you get back on track during the week, it will all even out on its own. But I know what you mean, I don’t like that food/booze hangover feeling either. I think your plan for future weekends is great b/c you never said you are going to deprive yourself of treats, just that you’re going to be a bit more prepared. Perfect! 🙂
Angela (the diet book junkie) says
haha…i can relate to the Monica from friends. games become sport when i’m involved. (on a side note, i also run like Pheobe, apparently….:) )
i’m not sure how to keep healthy on holidays.mine usually involves going back home for a few weeks to see friends and family. as much as i love them, this always means a lot of eating, not a lot of running. :p
Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum says
“…although when it comes to competition, I morph into Monica from FRIENDS immediately.” ME TOOOOO! Glad I’m not alone. 🙂
And as for eating healthy on the weekends? Well, what does it say about me that I totally botched my workout today (Yes, a Tuesday) and indulged in several platefuls of heavy Indian food?
Leah @ Why Deprive? says
Those nachos look amazing!
I try and keep thinks as healthy as I can, but on long weekends and holidays I’m not always successful.
Michelle (Delightfully Dietetic) says
The nacho gods look down on you and smile!
You had the best weekend ever food wise haha. Sometimes that’s a good thing. It may not feel good on your tummy at the time, and you may feel guilty but hey we all gotta live a little. If food were just to survive, why would nacho’s exist? haha 🙂 I tend to indulge on holidays a little. But I’m good every other day 😉 Have a good one!!!
Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks says
I’m sorry, but those nachos look worth it to me! 😀
Blond Duck says
Nachos and sliders? Yum!
Lindsay says
I am a sucker for good nachos. They get me every time. Usually the lack of sleep gets me more than anything on trips and I never drink enough water.
