I’m running a little late this morning because my usual Friday segment on WCCB Rising was switched to today and I totally forgot to prepare a post ahead of time. I’m sure you all were waiting on pins and needles… Ha, kidding.
I had fun this morning with Terrance making at-home microwave popcorn (<—watch it here). I’ve become quite obsessed with it lately because it’s so quick and easy, plus with all the news about the danger of microwave popcorn lately, it’s nice to know I’m avoiding the chemicals.
My mom is here for a few days, and we’re looking forward to getting outside and having some fun! I took care of all the grocery shopping yesterday and realized I am a fairly predictable shopper. In fact, there are 5 things I buy and eat every week.
1. Local eggs. Sometimes I get spoiled and have a friend that gives me fresh eggs. Those weeks are the best! Otherwise I buy local eggs from my farmers market or from our local Healthy Home Market. They’re one thing that I can really TASTE a difference with and it’s hard to go back to grocery store eggs.
2. Avocado. Everyone’s favorite healthy fat, right? I’m no exception. Whether I eat these with eggs, on a salad, with fajitas or on a sandwich, I find myself using them a lot. It helps that Hailey is a big fan and has avocado at least once a day.
3. Salad Greens. Occasionally I’ll be a bit more adventurous and opt for arugula or baby kale, but romaine and spinach are my staples. I love the crunch romaine gives to my salad and spinach is so versatile that it can go in eggs, sandwiches, smoothies, mac ‘n cheese AND in salads. What’s not to love about that?
4. Fun Cheese. Feta and goat cheese, how I love thee. I love how creamy and delicious these cheeses are and how quickly they can add flavor to a dull salad, sandwich or pasta dish. They are a bit pricey, but I always regret it when I skip buying them!
5. Greek Yogurt. I actually haven’t eaten a lot of it lately, but Hailey really enjoys it, so I always pick some up. I like to branch out and try different brands. Let me tell you, this Greek Gods Honey variety is pretty amazing.
*Bonus* Something Seasonal. I try to buy at least one item each week that’s unique to keep things interesting. I try and see what’s in season and go from there. This week’s choice, the pomegranate, was a huge hit with Hailey. She can’t get enough!
What are your grocery staples?
How often to you pick up a new-to-you item?
christina says
I love this post! I need to do one similar to this. 🙂 Avocados, greens, eggs, and greek yogurt are all on my weekly list. Something seasonal — that made me smile. My “seasonal” grocery finds are usually something like gingerbread M&Ms or candy ha! Oh and btw they are disgusting, don’t buy them!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Most of my staples are the same as yours – spinach, eggs, organic cheese, avocados, tofu, almond milk, bananas, etc. 🙂
And I also usually pick up one or two new items every week. Keeps things interesting!
Kimberly @ Healthy Strides says
I like this list – and I need to get back into buying avocados.
My grocery list always has frozen vegetables (broccoli is the most popular), bananas, eggs, almond milk and … I don’t know. I’ve fallen into a huge rut lately, part mental and part trying to keep the budget down. I am tweaking my diet since I’m done marathon training so I’m hoping the emphasis on clean eating will inspire creativity.
Wait. I got it. Hummus is always on list. I picked up Eat Well Enjoy Life edamame hummus today for the work fridge, and I’m excited to try it.
Mike @ Midwestern Bite says
We ate our first two backyard eggs this morning. You’re right. It’s absolutely no comparison since they free range for greens and bugs like they were designed to do, and are great kitchen scrap disposals for us. They also have organic balanced chicken feed available for the times when they’re feeling lazy or need a little something extra.
I am sorry to relay you did not win the MidwesternBite Great Chicken Contest of 2013. Thanks for entering. We announced the winner today.
I’m sure your heart is breaking. Try to live on.
Brittany Dixon says
It’s probably best I didn’t name the chicken. I’ve got nothing worthy of such an honor and all names I do come up with must go into the running for my child on the way 😉
Maria says
My staples: milk, spinach, whole wheat bread, eggs, cucumbers, and frozen berries. I get super excited about seasonal stuff though and right now am psyched about pomegranates and clementines. I’m actually a bigger fan of winter fruits than summer ones (besides watermelon of course).
And okay, some of the seasonal things include pumpkin macarons from Trader Joe’s or egg nog 🙂
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
Pretty much buy those 5 things every week too, minus the avocados. I don’t buy those every week…Just wondering how many eggs do you go through a week? Do you just buy 1 dozen?
Brittany Dixon says
Usually 1 dozen will do, but they’re gone by Saturday. I eat 1/day, David eats 2 every 1-3 days and Hailey has one here and there 🙂
Ali says
My staples are bananas, avocados, almond milk, chicken and salad greens.
Alex says
Almond milk, yogurt, eggs, cheese, bread, spinach, bananas
Erika says
I love, love, love that Greek God’s yogurt – but did you notice it says “style”?? I’m not really sure what that means but I’ve been lead to believe it’s not real Greek yogurt – I don’t care though because I love it so much 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Hm, I didn’t notice- haha! Interesting. I’m with you though, it’s so good, who cares 😉
Kelly says
I love avocado and want so badly to add it to my morning eggs but I never do because I don’t want the rest of the avocado to go bad. Can you make an avocado last longer then a day? I’ve tried leaving the pit in the half that I don’t use but it still ends up brown the next day.
Brittany Dixon says
We usually go through the entire avocado in a day! I’ll put a little on breakfast and use the rest for lunch and Hailey’s meals. I’ve kept it overnight before, but it definitely doesn’t hold it’s quality for long.
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
I definitely have a few items that are always on my list! Salad greens are a big one. So are tomatoes (or canned tomatoes depending on the season) because I feel like I can do anything with them!
Marjorie says
I love the microwave popcorn segment. Genius! You look like a natural on TV too. 🙂
My weekly usuals at the grocery store: eggs, bananas, salad greens, plain greek yogurt, and deli turkey.
Lee says
Salsa, eggs, yogurt, bananas, apples and some sort of bread.
I actually have an air popper which I love to make popcorn in.
Matt @ Runner Savvy says
All of these are on my list every week!
jodie says
Greens, bananas, apples, cottage cheese and yogurt. Every week. And hummus but I make mine 🙂
jodie says
Question…I thought soft cheeses + pregnancy was a no-no?
Brittany Dixon says
The theory behind soft cheese is that some are made with unpasteurized milk, which is where the ‘danger’ lies. In the US, almost all of them use pasteurized milk (says it on the label), so those are fine! Thank goodness 😉
Courtney @ Don't Blink. Just Run. says
I love love love goat cheese! It’s so good on salads.
Leslee @ Her Happy Balance says
I am a HUGE feta cheese fan too. So delicious. Love the idea of alwyas purchasing something seasonal. Especially now as thanksgiving and the Winter holidays are on their way, seasonal purchases seem so festive. I want some cranberries 🙂
Lisa says
How do you serve the pomegranate to Hailey? I remember eating it a long time ago and there was a seed in the middle that you had to spit out! I havent bought one since because i specifically remember this!
Elle says
My staples are: eggs, spinach, cheese (always feta, sometimes gouda and mozzarella too), milk for the husband and bacon
Rosey Rebecca says
I love avocados! I put it on everything too!
