Friday thoughts. What a clever title! I know what I should really call this post instead. It’s Friday and my head is a jumbled mess of thoughts so I hope you don’t mind if I just jot them all down here. But that doesn’t exactly fit into my designated title box.
Oh good, I’m already rambling.
1. Hailey has a cold and has molars breaking through right now. Her once a day (2 hour) naps all week have been shortened to about 45-50 minutes. It’s made for some long, fussy afternoons. This is probably the cause of today’s mental burn out. TGIF.
2. I want to try the Whole30 eating plan. For those not familiar, it’s a strict version of Paleo. This means no dairy, no beans, no sugar, no processed foods, no white potatoes and no grains. This I could do. However, there is also no alcohol. I’m not willing to give up wine with some fun events coming up, so I’m trying to decide whether to do it with wine or if that’s worth it or not? Thoughts?
3. My 15 days of yoga is turning out to be a bust. I’ve skipped two days. However, that in itself is teaching me something. I’m still going to review yogavibes and my experience when it’s over next week. Eat In Month, however, is going swimmingly. We have yet to eat out!
4. These two make me smile. BFFs.
5. David and I have a BIG vacation coming up. I’m really excited, but first we need to do responsible things like notarizing our wills. This kind of puts a damper on the thought of vacation.
6. Koda is soft. And sweet. She’s laying on my feet right now. I love vizslas.
7. I really want to go to the 2013 Blend Retreat. Like, realllly want to go. Is anyone else planning on going?
What’s on your mind on this fabulous Friday?
Lindsay @ Health Foragers says
I just heard of Paleo and whole30 plans the other day. We are doing a non-processed diet, inspired by 100 days of real food, but not extending it to grains, dairy and beans. I had no idea beans were even processed. hmm. I am the firm believer in doing something to whatever extent that you can. I would think you would still get health benefits from the program even if you had a few drinks.
blackhuff says
They are two best friends for sure – can see how you love those two 🙂
Have a good weekend.
Good luck with the cold she have and molars breaking through. Painmeds are the best bet (my opinion).
Jane Preston says
LOVE the BFF pictures and hope Hailey feels better!
Not sure if I could give up beans and healthy grains, because they have so many health benefits. And, it sounds like a lot of animal protein, but I know a lot of people use this diet.
Good luck with your decision and have a great weekend!

I agree and definitely couldn’t do it long term. I’m more so thinking about it as a self experiment to see how I feel without it. Still not sure whether or not I’ll do it because I love my whole grains and beans, too!
Ali says
I think you could still do that whole30 thing and not give up wine. Go for it.
I also think you should totally go to park city. It is an awesome place and that list of activities sounds awesome.
Lee says
I’m definitely interested in going to Blend. I’m not sure if I can swing it, but it would be fun.
Katie@PopCultureCuisine says
I looked into the Whole30 thing, but too be honest it was just too restrictive for me, with my disordered eating past I just new anything with that many limitations would end up making me crazy in the long run. For the new year I am just trying to eat more cleanly, mindfully, and limit the booze a little 🙂
Brittany says
I’m a little worried about it driving me crazy, too. I really want to try it to see how I feel, but doing it for 30 days might drive me bonkers.
Shari says
I hope Hailey feels better soon!
Erika says
30 days without wine is doable. You can still have fun without wine – I think if you’re going to do the challenge than you need to do it all. But maybe that’s just easy for me to say since I’m not really a wine drinker 🙂
We still need to do our will too but it’s so depressing!
Brittany says
I know, I know. I could totally go 30 days without wine (after all I did it for 10 months when pregnant :)) but I just don’t want to. I love a glass of wine on a Friday night and just don’t think I’m willing to sacrifice that.
And I agree- wills are depressing! Necessary, but sad!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Hailey and Koda are so sweet together! Love it!
And Vishnu and I are also planning a couple of big vacations this year, including our Honeymoon (if we can still call it that)!!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I was just pricing things out to see if I could go to Blend this year. The airfare is SOOOOOO expensive to SLC, but I think I can manage it!
Brittany says
Oh my gosh, I’d be so excited if I got to meet you! 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Blend…YES! Last year was a blast and this year looks like it might be even better. I hope you go!
Whole30…you know my thoughts on this. You can do it! 😉
Brittany says
You’re going too?? Oh man, now I really need to figure out how to make this happen!
Lauren K says
Hailey and Koda together in that picture is precious! You are still doing great with your yoga challenge. Doing anything every single day is tough! We need to get our yoga date on the calendar…maybe end your challenge with a great hot class in CLT!
Brittany says
Yes, can we please get that on the calendar? What about not next weekend, but the next? You pick the class!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
The pictures of Hailey and Koda melt my heart!
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
My husband and I are doing a 30 Paleo Challenge right now that is just as you described for the Whole 30. However, I didn’t give up wine. I just can’t do it. I’m doing the challenge mainly to see what it’s all about and how my body reacts to it. Not really trying to lose weight but in a week I’ve already dropped a few pounds and feeling really good! I say give it a try without giving up wine 🙂 I’m really hoping to go to the BLEND retreat also. It will be my first blogger retreat and I can’t wait!
Brittany says
Oh I love that I’m not the only one not crazy about giving up wine! Have you found it difficult?
I love hearing who all may go to BLEND! Makes me want to go even more…
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
It hasn’t been all that difficult for me at least. The hubby is having a harder time though. I do miss Greek yogurt, and goat cheese though. After not being able to have wine for 9 months, I’m not giving it up without being pregnant again!
Ashley says
I’ve been doing paleo/primal for a few months on and off. But I can’t give up my coffee or wine. It’s just the “best I can do” mentality. If I’m giving up most dairy, all beans, all starches and most sugar, I’m drinking my coffee and the occasional glass of wine for my sanity. 🙂
Brittany says
LOOOOOVE it. I might do the same! Did you find it hard to give up beans? That might be the hardest one for me… because I’m NOT giving up vino 😉
Ashley says
Ehhh, yeah. I ate a lot of black beans and hummus for a long time. But I guess with all the fats/proteins in my diet after I switched, I didn’t really notice too much. I eat a lot of meat, veggie, coconut, avocados. 🙂 I recently joined emeals too (with an awesome Groupon!) and they have a Paleo meal plan which kind of takes the choice out of what I’m going to eat. If you decide not to do paleo, you might check out primal. I think it’s Mark Sisson’s Primal Blueprint maybe? They allow minimal dairy, dark chocolate and maybe red wine? I can’t remember.
Monica says
Well, as the W30 guidelines go – if you don’t give up wine it wouldn’t actually be a Whole30. You might not see all the benefits from the program – but it would still be good to eat whole foods! 🙂
Brittany says
Good point. I couldn’t call it Whole30, but maybe I’ll try out a modified version to see how it feels!
Monica says
You could always go for more of an 80/20 paleo (what Robb Wolf calls “weekday paleo”). That way you get the best of both worlds! 🙂
Bakeaholic says
Maybe you could shoot for 15 days and if that goes smoothly, then you can do all 30 days. If you have parties coming up, sticking to the diet might be hard, but there is always a reason or occasion to eat badly. So, just drink a glass of water and eat a handful of almonds before you head out the door so you don’t arrive hungry and sabotage yourself.
First time visitor. Fun blog.
Brittany says
Thanks for visiting 🙂
I agree, there is always a reason to or occasion to celebrate. I’m just thinking since I’m not doing it for weight loss if a modified version would still reap some benefits? We’ll see!
Heather says
I want to go! But then I flip at the idea of leaving K…maybe that’s just more of a reason in favor of going though…
Michelle @ Lifewithacrazypup says
Hey Brittany,
We started trying Whole30 but didn’t last more than 5 or 6 days, which I was really ashamed of. The no sugar or carbs or… anything basically made us both incredibily moody and unpleasant to be around. I’m sure it gets better after another week or so.. but it just wasn’t for us. Good Luck if you try it though!
Also, you commented a couple days on my instagram asking what we were celebrating. I didn’t answer since I wanted to write up the whole story.. so here it is… our celebration story.

Have a great weekend!
Brittany says
Hey, no need to feel ashamed! If it’s not working for ya, it’s not working. I’d do the same thing.
Clicking over now to see the news…

Aww, I love seeing the picture of the bffs!! We are currently dealing with the flu virus over here. K has been sick since Wednesday, finally taking her to the doctor today, I was sick yesterday and hubby was sick late last night into the morning. What a week it’s been. There will be a lot more cuddling and sleeping going on all weekend. Hope everyone else out there stays healthy. Have a great weekend.
Dawn says
I know where you are coming from in regards to the Whole 30 and wine. That is always the hardest thing for me to give up when I’m doing super strict paleo for any length of time (my normal diet is paleo for the most part, but I do include wine and dark chocolate!!). I do think staying away from everything on the Whole 30 ‘no’ list is pretty integral to getting the full benefits of the program. I feel like is someone is going to DO the Whole 30, then DO the Whole 30. It is a lot of effort the first go-round so you want to make it worth it. The Whole 30 folks are pretty strict about what is or isn’t Whole 30. I am pretty sure they say that if stray from the program you have to start all over. I do not necessarily agree with this approach, but I do see their point. One thing you maybe could do: wait until the event/party arrives before you make your decision. You might be in a place where you don’t want to derail your efforts and the wine might not be appealing to you. Or, you might decide you really want that wine and it will be worth it you. And that is OK, too! You don’t have to decide right now. You will experience so much on a Whole 30, way more than just physical benefits … so it would be difficult to predict how you will be feeling about the wine in a couple of weeks (or even days). Sorry for the long-winded reply!
Brittany says
Love your input- thank you! You’re right. I really shouldn’t call it the Whole30 because the Whole30 is it’s own thing. It would be like going vegetarian and eating chicken- huh? 🙂 I might try a form of paleo because I really don’t want to deprive myself of a glass of wine. Haha, I know it sounds like I have problems, but when Friday evening hits, it calls to me! 😉
Dawn says
Have you heard of the 21-Day Sugar Detox? http://the21daysugardetox.com/
This one is actually more my style than Whole 30 … it might be worth looking into for you, too. For one thing, since it is only 21 days so it is easier to work around the social events in your life. 🙂 Also, there are three levels to choose from, depending on where you are in your personal health journey. And the author of the program, Diane, is great … she also wrote the book Practical Paleo.
Dawn says
Also, here’s a really great blog post on the Whole 30: http://www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/2012/12/30/30-reasons-whole30/
Hallie @ ChasingHallie says
Hey! A really good friend of mine has done the Whole30 twice and is about to start again. You should check out her blog where she details it and some recipes etc. http://www.jeremyandkathleen.com
And Blend looks like such a fun time! Thinking about it….
Caits says
I’ve actually been thinking about doing a Whole30 myself, but I’m not sure I can truly commit to it for 30 days. I would definitely love to share with your experience if you do decide to follow through. 🙂
Christina says
Forget the Whole30, I want to hear more about your big vacation! 🙂
Keri says
I say plan for success. So I would say do the whole30 when you know you can fully do it. for me, there’s no point in doing it if I don’t see the full benefit of it, which means following the guidelines to the letter. I’ve heard people say they didn’t feel different only to find out they still ate honey and maple syrup (natural? Yes. Whole30? No.) would your husband be on board? That would help my success then I could clean out the cupboards.
Jessie says
Poor Hailey. Hopefully by the end of the week she’ll start feeling back to her normal self <3
Sherry says
Let me know if you decide to do the Whole 30 so that I can pack my suitcase accordingly when I come to visit 🙂
Jamie @ FoodinRealLife says
Yikes, that diet sounds terribly restrictive and not that much fun. What are you hoping to gain from trying it? I know you say its not weight loss motivated but you seem to be a very balanced and sensible girl about food and that seems awfully strict!
Hope Hailey is feeling better and that you get your naptimes back!
Brittany says
Honestly, pure curiosity. I just hear people RAVE about how great they feel and how much energy they have. I’m not too proud to admit that I’m a sucker for marketing sometime and curiosity sometimes gets the best of me.
After thinking about it over the weekend (over loaded homemade nachos) I agree with your thoughts- it’s just too restrictive. It was a fun idea to play around with, but probably not for me.
PS- the comment below this one contains a great compliment to you and your blog 🙂
Danielle says
Agree with Jamie. I have to say, I’m a little disappointed that you even are thinking of doing something so restrictive, given your frequent posts about everything in moderation, and overcoming your disordered eating past. I eat Paleo about 80 percent of the time but have NO desire to do the whole30 ever. You have to be psycho about everything you put in your mouth and might as well forget ever going out to eat, since you don’t know what oils things are cooked in, etc etc. p.s. Jamie I love your blog!! You are so real, relatable and you’ve often made me feel better about my struggles with my first year of motherhood (I have a 1 year old son). I hope you keep up your blog, I really enjoy reading.
Brittany says
Hate to hear your disappointed by me just thinking about it. Like I said to Jamie, curiosity gets the better of me sometimes and I like to try things out (like when I went pescatarian for Lent last year). However, I totally agree with you that it is pretty restrictive and after looking more into it, I realize it would probably make me crazy and not for me. Thanks for your input!
