What {we} Ate Wednesday: BH Edition

by Brittany on July 27, 2011 · 35 comments

BH stands for Braxton Hicks contractions.  I felt them all day yesterday, which was something new to me.  It’s when your baby bump tightens up and is really hard for a minute before relaxing again.  They don’t hurt, but yesterday I seriously felt them the entire day, which was something new to me.  I actually timed how far apart they were, but after realizing that they were inconsistent and painless, I decided I’d just take it easy for the day… and I drank a ton of water, so it definitely wasn’t a dehydration issue.  Guess my body is just preparing for the big event!

A 34 week belly shot as of yesterday, next to my new sign :)

Now to the grub…

Breakfast

A summery mix of Chobani peach yogurt, a peach, blueberries, 1/4 cup raw oats and chia seeds.  Did you know you can eat oats raw? You can, and they’re better (IMO) than overnight oats… but I know, I promised I’d try overnight oats again and I will… one day ;)

Lunch

I had a lot of little leftovers to use up in the fridge, so I made a pseudo-jambalaya with leftover brown rice, a veggie sausage, okra from my CSA, onion, leftover diced tomatoes from at-home Indian and some Cajun spices!

It was actually incredibly filling and I couldn’t eat all the veggie sausage pieces.

Afternoon Snackage

I took about a 30 minute nap and when I woke up, I felt I should continue to the toddler afternoon trend, and for ‘snack time’ I enjoyed peanut butter and honey smothered on whole wheat with a small glass of organic 2% milk.

Dinner

A simple meal of a mixed green salad, tomato, onion and feta, topped with a delicious Wasabi Ginger Soy dressing. So delicious!!

We also ate homemade pizza, from defrosted dough.  I was short of veggies, so we topped in with turkey pepperoni and shredded mozzarella. I had 2 pieces.

Dessert

An early dinner meant my snack tooth kicked in a few hours later.  I quickly satisfied it with vanilla ice cream, peanut butter chips and blueberries. YUM.

What is your favorite ice cream or fro-yo topping?

I’m loving peanut butter chips lately! And I can’t wait to be able to enjoy some TCBY in my life again once Baby D arrives!

You look great! Can’t believe you are so close to the end of your pregnancy!

My fave ice cream topping is definitely chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries!!!

I love to top my yogurt with fresh fruit!!!

Question – do you always track your calories and other nutrient intake daily?

Reply

Brittany July 27, 2011 at 8:26 am

Not everyday. My motivation for tracking when I first became pregnant was to make sure I was getting in enough protein during the days when all I wanted were bagels :) Now I track when I remember to in order to make sure I’m getting a balanced amount of nutrients, but don’t stress about it if I don’t. But I probably will use tracking to help lose baby weight later!

My fave ice cream topping is all natural, crunchy pb – it’s so good over vanilla, cookies n’ cream and mint chip!

Ahh Braxton Hicks sound so scary! It seems like you took it in stride though, good for you :)

Hmmm I have to pick one froyo topping? Well I can’t. I love cookie dough, mochi, and reeses pieces.

Brittany, I’m 36 weeks and have been sad because I haven’t felt any Braxton Hicks yet (which makes me think I’ll go at least 41 weeks because I’m not even “practicing”). I thought BH always hurt a little… but they don’t? Maybe I’m having them and not noticing? How would I know?

Reply

Brittany July 27, 2011 at 8:37 am

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I had ever felt them until yesterday. Does your little one ever stick his butt or back up and out, so it feels really hard on one side of your belly? It kind of feels like that, except that it’s that hard and tight all over.

From what my doc has told me, BH aren’t supposed to hurt. I think I’ve had a couple before but didn’t really notice (just thought it was Baby D poking up to say hi), but yesterday when they were consistent ALL day long, I definitely knew they were going on.

Unfortunately I don’t think it’s a real sign of the baby coming sooner or later, so you never know! How exciting that you’re 36 weeks!! Congrats :)

Thanks! That does help! And now I know more of what you mean, because I definitely feel his little butt pushing out all.the.time but sometimes it does feel more “all over.”

Kim I never had BH during my pregnancy and my daughter was 5 days early. =)

I actually just love plain vanilla ice cream :) I’ve been making my own with raw milk, really good vanilla and sweetened with maple syrup!!

I do love Reese’s Cups though, so when I splurge, that’s what I go for!

Your new sign looks great! Lots of information but not “word overload”. Nicely done.

I love toppings like M&Ms or crushed oreos the best.

I love the new sign (and the bump!) I wonder if/when I’ll start feeling BH contractions.

I have been putting hot fudge on frozen yogurt lately and it has been amazing! :)

I can’t believe you are already 34 weeks pregnant, you look great. All of your food looks so good.

My favorite topping for ice cream would be rainbow sprinkles and chocolate syrup.

Oooo, pb chips sound like a perfect topping! I’m also a fan of granola and mango, but it depends on the ice cream/yogurt flavor underneath.

I love the pic of you with your sign. The fact that you’re adorably pregnant and standing next to sign that says “weight loss” and “athletic performance” just makes me smile.
I had BH all night on Sunday. It was awful and kept me up until about 1:30 or 2:00. I almost called the doctor, but then they stopped. Guess our bodies are just getting ready. It is SO EXCITING!!!

Love the sign! Back when I could eat fro-yo and other dairy products, I loved white chocolate chips on top. I’m also a sucker for rainbow sprinkles. :)

Your baby bump is so cute! That is too funny you mention PB chips, because I purchased a bag a week ago to bake with and I have just been eating them straight from the bag! They are seriously addicting. Hopefully I have enough left to actually use in a recipe. And my favorite fro-yo topping would have to be butterfingers…or cheesecake pieces.

It sure is getting close, isn’t it?

I like peanuts and chocolate on ice cream. Yum! I also like banana, pineapple and coconut for a tropical treat. Mmm.

i guess i’m a little weird with ice cream. I like it plain so nothing gets in the way of that smooth creaminess!

You look so good! Hopefully those BH’s stop bothering you soon :) I can’t believe how soon you are going to be due!
Once again I am jealous of everything you ate today. The salad with goat cheese looks so good! And I have to agree, peanut butter chips are the bomb.

Hi Brittany. The sign looks great, as do you! As for ice cream toppings? Hmm…crushed coffee crisp bars. Geez, I haven’t had that in YEARS…. Take care.

Warm gooey chocolate chip cookie… but that’s not so much a “topping” as an “bottom-ing!” Mmmmmmm

I have a silly question…why cant you eat froyo while pregnant?

I LOVE fruit on my ice cream.

Yeah!

Spread the word on raw oats! They’re awesome! :)

They can get just as big as overnight oats! (Although the goji berries and raisins don’t get quite as juicy, I still prefer it this way too!)

And, to answer your question: I’m a big fan of hot caramel topping! You really can’t go wrong! I love it when the caramel slightly hardens, so it’s almost… Chewy! :D
